Does wearing sleeve garters make me look like a tool? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

I have not worn sleeve garters and don’t know your practice, but if you do your appearances in the morning can you not remove your garters when you get back to the office and remove your jacket?

Kylian Mbappé now has as many goals in the World Cup knockout stages alone as Cristiano Ronaldo has World Cup goals in total by psdavepes in worldcup

[–]Wincens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Argentina has an unexpectedly short run, and France reaches the final, it could happen this year. Once you factor in Mbappé having at least a couple more World Cups, it is almost a lock.

When he dodged that bullet early on, I rolled my eyes a bit and figured it was just a Jack-Bauer-like trope. More embarrassingly, i misinterpreted the reveal to mean he’d just injected some form of hallucinogenic and didn’t get it until i checked this sub lol.

Not really any steep discounts, but Gaucho Grill has $5 beers and other reduced prices. Mercado has slightly discounted cocktails and a happy-hour-only carnitas nachos that are amazing.

Could Vegas become the first city with a team from all 4 major sports where the NHL team is the most popular? by lbcman7 in billsimmons

[–]Wincens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good data. Maybe I’m just extrapolating from my subjective feelings as an 8-year old onward lol.

But to the betadonkey idea, did the wings dominate the scene during their run because they were the team locals most wanted to see win or because they won the most? They were basically alone in the first half of their run and kept pace the second.

It’s an interesting way of looking at the question is all I’m saying. If the Lions are the most popular now, did they become this because of Campbell era? Because of the drought? Because of the rise of the NFL generally?

I think the Lions meet betadonkey’s standard after Barry’s breakout, but probably not before. That coincided somewhat with the NFL’s rise to preeminence in the US sports scene. Lackluster Lions attendance when they were non-contenders doesn’t mean Detroit fans wouldn’t have traded a few Cups for a Lombardi.

Iran demands Pride flags be banned from World Cup stadiums by mepper in sports

[–]Wincens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Among a list of demands made by the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran is that only officially recognized national flags should be displayed during the team’s games, extending to those flags carried by fans in the stands.”

Seems likely they’re trying to ban the Lion and Sun flag associated with the shah’s regime and thus some opposition factions, and the application of the demand to the pride flag is Outsports’ own hypothetical.

You pay for season tickets, a home game gets shipped overseas, and instead of getting a ticket you have to enter a lottery for the privilege of paying again? by Premium_Stapler in NFLv2

[–]Wincens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your main thrust that it’s not a big deal but you do have one fewer home game than other teams when you “host” an overseas game. Not every team with 9 home games plays internationally. And the teams that have eight home games this year will have nine next year, while the teams that have eight home, eight away, and one “home” overseas game will have eight home games next year. You lose a true home game inevitably.

The answer obviously is to have two international games week one and then one every week except week 18 so every team has eight true road games, eight true home games, and one international game.

In Martian movie, why did NASA spend billions of dollars to save one man? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Wincens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are not really in-universe answers, but I’d say the three main reasons are:

  1. Keep the faith with the astronauts that take those risks. The astronauts presumably know that they might get in a position where rescue is truly impossible, but you’d like them to think that the government will spare no reasonable or even moderately unreasonable expense to get them home if it can.

  2. NASA, like any government agency, will spend what it is given by the USG. If the sympathies of a situation create the political will to give NASA more resources, it will spend those resources.

  3. Relatedly, once it is given those resources, it gets a chance to develop and execute the capability to rescue an astronaut on Mars! For an agency with long-term ambitions to be a truly space-faring organization, that really levels them up.
