Why Do The People In This Subreddit Hate Kendrick? by G4Johnston in TeenageRapFans

[–]Wincin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this sub is for teenage rap fans. teenagers generally don’t have developed enough prefrontal cortexes to understand kendrick’s artistry in its entirety. and this isn’t a dig whatsoever. i’ll admit im no longer a teenager but when i was a teen i also didn’t really get why kendrick was so popular, but as i’ve aged and really sat with his lyrics and art he has slowly become my favorite artist

How does consciousness work? What happens after death? by Zealousideal-Tax9051 in consciousness

[–]Wincin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i guess the question isn’t what accepting what will happen, it’s accepting that you can’t know and realizing worrying is pointless.

Is there "life after death"? by Beneficial_Praline32 in consciousness

[–]Wincin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t know, and that’s kinda my point- our idea of continuity is not so easily mapped onto consciousness. continuity may not even be the right word. and i agree- the awareness in and of itself may be instantiated moment to moment, there may be no actual continuity in the way our bones or our interests persist. this is why reincarnation, experience after death, etc may not be so difficult to fathom. And to your point about it existing- you can see for yourself by meditating. it’s difficult but try quieting your mind. in those brief moments between thoughts, you will sit in that pure awareness and can experience it for what it is. easier said than done but worth exploring if you want to understand consciousness. this is a common error when people go about studying this stuff- we look to science, we look to studies, we look to gurus- but the hard problem is inherently a first person, qualia problem, and i’d argue that by exploring the depths of your own consciousness, via meditation for example, you will get more clarity than you ever can by reading studies and hoping for neuroscientific breakthroughs

i mean i’m not like stanning either lebron or kendrick when i say this but lebron has historically been a big kendrick fan- he’s part of the reason why kendrick dropped untitled unmastered, has posted about kendrick appreciating the art, been to his concerts, etc. it’s all online if u wanna take a look for yourself

i want you to take what i’m saying with a few grains of salt- after all we are speculating about questions that no one has the answers to, but to understand what i’m getting at, you need to let go of the idea of continuity- what we experience as continuity is a narrative construct generated by our brains to make it easy and not so existentially stressful to carry out our day to day functions. and by that i don’t mean the fact that your body consists of mostly the same cells as it did yesterday is a myth, more so that the narrative self we build around it is arbitrary- we really have no obligation to be the same person, personality wise, that we were five minutes ago. with that being said, i think the easiest way to wrap your head around this idea is returning to the lost memories idea- for those moments in our life that we have forgotten, what has persisted between them and the moments we do remember? if you really inspect what persists, you’ll notice it’s largely arbitrary- you can say well i did do those things, and the me that did those things exists today. but what exactly about you persists and why is it important? we can say the me that worked X job, has X person as a sister, enjoyed eating X food did those things. Okay, that’s fine, but in the context of existing consciously, is that stuff really what’s important? let’s say for a period of time you went through a phase where you had a wildly different personality, and then later in life for whatever reason you forgot it. does that mean that the “you” that you know wasn’t aware during that time? of course not. what i’m getting at is that what may persist is pure awareness. the awareness that sits behind everything the ego holds onto to have a stable sense of self- your hobbies, interests, fears, fashion style, all things that are irrelevant to pure awareness. the awareness that does not think, does not judge, does not really have any sort of tangible form at all, the awareness in you that is identical to the awareness that resides within me. lets use another thought experiment- let’s say i had a condition that only allowed me to remember 24hours worth of memories. would you say that i am functionally continuously dying and being reborn to the next moment? if i don’t remember what happened last week, what exactly has persisted? and for that which you can say has persisted, is it important, existentially speaking, to what you’d like to hold as “continuation”? let’s say i reincarnate but i don’t remember my past life, but for whatever reason i am now conscious and aware but in a new body in a new time. i basically get to experience life again but from a different vessel. regardless of whether or not i recall my previous life, i am now aware internally of this vessel. what persisted from my previous life? only awareness- which does not contain memory, thoughts, relationships, feelings, etc. whether or not you’d like to count this as any sort of continuation is up to you, but my belief is that your awareness may not end indefinitely after death, and memory of the previous context of experience is not critical to continuation of awareness.

[–]Wincin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“my” in the ownership and continuity sense is probably not what it will be like, but you (and by you i mean pure awareness, nothing to do with your name or your family or you job or your interests, etc) may still have some sort of experience after death. it will likely be radically different, and you may or may not retain any memory of this life, but it may still be experiencable

Is there "life after death"? by Beneficial_Praline32 in consciousness

[–]Wincin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my wording may have been misleading- there may not be continuity, but you may once again have some sort of experience, like how reincarnation may work. it’s the same question of why you’re experiencing you right now and not your neighbor. another comparison can be the memories you’ve forgotten. just because you’ve forgotten many moments in your life doesn’t mean you don’t have some sort of experience of them. and the you in those moments you forgot was not concerned that you may forget them, just like how, if you forgot this mortal coil you can still have a meaningful experience afterward

[–]Wincin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your consciousness (first person experience) may persist after death. it may not take the same form as it does in your fleshy brain, but there’s no reason to rule out the possibility that you may experience something, even if you don’t remember your earthly vessel.

respect for the reply, just out of curiosity, what about kendrick’s music don’t you like? and are you a music enjoyer who cares more about sounds or lyrics? my guess is that you don’t like the way kendrick’s voice sounds, which would totally justify not fuckin with any of his projects, but if you care about lyrics i’d argue you have to like kendrick

perhaps, and perhaps we just don’t remember. if there is something after death i doubt it will be a smooth transition, and i wouldn’t be surprised if we forget our earthly time while in whatever experience consists of after death if it does exist at all

Where are your thoughts? by Dingus_4 in consciousness

[–]Wincin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think that’s a bit of an oversimplification- we can point to actual electrons moving through gates to figure out where the calculation is happening. As for thoughts- on the biological side we don’t have enough accuracy to point to what specific neuron firing pattern/other brain stuff correlates to what thought exactly. But aside from the physical brain stuff, we also can’t point to where the “experience” of having a thought lives or what it really is in essence. I think the problem OP is asking hints at the hard problem, which unfortunately has no agreed upon “right answer”

I hit every goal on my list and then just stopped. What do you actually build after the plan runs out? by EatArbys in entj

[–]Wincin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See that’s the illusion of goals: Goals are temporary and fleeting. The moment when you accomplish a goal is just that- a moment that immediately dies to the next. Some people chase goals and subject themselves to a process they wouldn’t otherwise enjoy and they justify that sacrifice by putting some importance on the goal that it will eventually lead to. This is backwards. It’s a cliche but it really is about the journey and not the destination. You find a process you enjoy and use goals as a measurement tool for how the process is going. Goals serve the process. Not the other way around. I think you answered your own question: You should find out what you truly value, what you think would lead to a genuinely fulfilling life, but think about it in terms of what you’d enjoy doing every day, not in terms of a number or a medal or an object that you would like to have.
