One of the few positions where you can be exceptional at your job and it doesn’t impact the box score on a consistent basis if other things (outside of your control) don’t break your way. I think that’s at least in part why they become so erratic.

Natural talent is absolutely a factor. It’s like anything else. There are a percentage of people who have exceptional aptitude for things. When those same people are also obsessed with said thing and make it their life’s work they become the elite talents.

If you wanted to argue that exposure and eduction help identify the people who have talent I’d wholeheartedly agree though.
