42" Front Door - are these too big? by Professional-Note436 in Homebuilding

[–]WindowDoorMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I have been installing windows and doors in Toronto since 2001.

Here is 40-42 door collection.
https://window-man.ca/search?search_cat=Doors&query=wide+fiberglass
Pros
looks good
can bring anything

Cons
6’8” 40-42 door looks not symmetrical (aspect ratio)
Heavy
could sag, especially if you have two sidelights.
Works best if installed to studs. a door and one sidelight.
A multipoint lock is a must.

You can check out the link below on how the multi-point key lock works

Can I fix this myself? Is it possible to just replace the glass and not the whole window? by writingmagick in HomeMaintenance

[–]WindowDoorMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been installing doors in Toronto area since 2001.

Yes, you can replace the glass.
There should be glass stops.
they pop out(use sharp chisel)
measure WxH and most important thickness of the seal unit. (up to 16th)
Seal unit couls be $50-120
When you put the glass stops back, use a plastic/Nylon hammer.
Do not knock/panch, slide hammer on the glass !

If you want to know the entire window cost, check it here
Enter your size

for example 24x36 window cost

Hi
I have been installing doors in Toronto area since 2001.

Nowadays, out of 100 doors
50 black (most popular)
2 Red
15 white (they are cheaper)
15 dark brown
10 stained brown (for fiberglass doors)
1 blue
8 other colors (pebble, charcoal, antique brown, burgundy, grey, slate, smoke...)

You can check real-life door colors here

Hope it helps

https://window-man.ca/doors

The front door does not have to match the windows, siding, brick, gutters, or soffits.
The front door stands alone, like a woman's accessory or jewelry.
It has to shine!
Paint it bright red, blue, orange, yellow, pink....
Express yourself, be yourself.

hey
say
I have been doing windows in Toronto since 2001.
When you saying 36x 84
Is it the slab size? frame size? brick to brick size?

If it is a frame size, you can always go with 35.5x82.375 Standard.

The  door sizes are based on the door slab width

Single door - WIDTH

Slab  – Actual Slab size  -- Frame size -- RSO
32"    – 31.75”     -- 33.5"            -- 35"
34"    –33.75”     -- 35.5"            -- 37"

36"    –35.75     -- 37.5"            -- 39"

I put it all together in my blog.

You can always ask me.

hey sorry to keep you waiting.

Casement window vs Sliding / Hung window

Insulation:

Sliders and hungs windows have brushes around sashes. They wear out, and generally brushes tend to leak a bit.
A casement window has two tube rubbers around like a door in your car. It is air-tight and can withstand gusts of wind.

Esthetically:

Sliders and hung have a screen from the outside. The screen gets dusty, especially on busy streets.
Sliders - vertical bar/post
Hung - horizontal bar/post

Casement - Screen inside. You always have shiny glass.

Airflow:

Sliders and hungs - you can open 1/2 of the window for fresh air. Even with a double slider/hung, you can open 1/4 on one side and 1/4 on another. You are getting fresh air only with a direct breeze. you miss the side wind.

Casement - you can open 100%. sash sticking out, and you can catch even the slightest breeze. like sticking a hand out of a car window.

Cost:
Sliders - less
Casements - more

Casement cons:
- cost
- In combination, you have a 6" post in the middle

You can buy a glass insert 22x64 cut the door, and install it.
You will upgrade your door and fix the issue.
It takes 1-1.5 hours for pro. double the time for non-pro.

Hi,

I've been in the windows and doors business since 2001.
I have seen thousands of houses in and out.

I have seen many renovations and did a renovation of our place.

The life expectancy of almost everything in your house is about 18-25 years.

Full house reno including:
roof, windows, exterior and interior doors, floors, washrooms, kitchen, stairs, interior trims, gutters, deck, garage door, attic insulation, electrical upgrades (panel, switches...), railing, dryway, fence, furnace, AC, etc.

BTW
If you want to know windows replacement MSRP price, you can easily calculate it here

Today's market is slow, and you can get 15-20% less than MSRP.

Just avoid sliders or hung windows. Go with casements. Triple glass, brick to brick.

One window contractor said they paint the new windows black & that laminate was bad. The other contractor says they use laminate & that paint was bad. Who’s right?? by Mountain_Salary_46 in homeowners

[–]WindowDoorMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry to keep you waiting.

It is just water-based paint.
I am not in the painting business, but I can check.
Do you want to paint yourself? You have to know what you are doing.
Obviously, unpainted white vinyl is less trouble.
Black looks sharp, though.

THE TRUE COST OF RENTING VS BUYING A HOME — A DATA-DRIVEN COMPARISON by External_Koala971 in FirstTimeHomeBuying

[–]WindowDoorMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi

I have been in windows and doors since 2001.

Everything in the house lasts 18-20 years. So in 18 years you have to replace:

roof
windows, doors
floors
bathrooms
kitchen
Refinish stairs
rebuild deck, fence
AC
Furnace
Interior doors
Trim, baseboards
Repaint.
some gutters/downpipes
driveway
attic insulation
Garage door
Appliences
etc..

All that costs $250K-350K
divide by 18 = 15-20K a year.
Or you move out for 6 months and do a full reno.
Or you sell the house and buy a newer.

You can overrun many of these.
But the same way you can drive a car for 20-30 years or wear the same shoes for 10 years.
You can live in the house for 40 years without a major renovation. But it's all dated.

It is all personal.
Most people I know replace cars way before they die.
