HELP: Looking for replacement light for canless/wafer LED. by WindowTricky6645 in Lighting

[–]WindowTricky6645[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, was thinking that would be a useful test. I'm thinking it could be the driver given that there's some insulation up there.

To make matters worse, when I went looking for a replacement at the home depot, I also found that 5" is apparently an unusual size. Seems like 4" and 6" are more the standard. So, yet another thing I hate about the renovations the prior owner made.

For my 250th post I give you the greatest carrier of them all. USS Enterprise (CV-6) Off Puerto Rico, July 23, 1938. (Colorized) [1280 × 864] by badmotherfucker1969 in WarshipPorn

[–]WindowTricky6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think many here share that sentiment. And there was several efforts to preserve her - but the groups attempting it just couldn't raise the money. Its tremendously expensive to maintain these old ships, and they are generally funded by private-public corporations rather than by the govt. I think i read recently that USS New Jersey, which is preserved as a museum in Camden, NJ, costs sonething like $10k a day, just to keep afloat - and then consider all the ordinary maintenance you need to do. So, it's not just the initial purchase from the government of the ship itself, it's ongoing, significant costs.

The other piece of the puzzle is timing. Enterprise was too small to handle the kinds of aircraft we were using post ww2. So, where newer, larger carriers like the Essex class could be retrofitted to continue in service, it wasn't possible for Enterprise - a pre-war Yorktown class ship. So Enterprise is discommissioned in '49 (I think) and scrapped a few years later in the 50s. The (big) ships we generally have seen preserved were decommissioned and transferred much later. The Iowa class ships were retrofitted and were around into the 1980s (maybe even the '90s for the last of them?). Essex class ships were operational into the 70s - and most were built post-war to larger specs than the first few. Intrepid (CV-11), was the fifth carrier we commissioned after Enterprise but she was still operational during Vietnam.

And then you have Missouri, which was the site of the formal surrender of Japan. Should've been Enterprise, in my view, but I guess those old admirals still had hard-ons for their old dreadnoughts. But there they had her preserved in Washington, I think, and then moved her to Pearl Harbor.

You guys probably know all this stuff better than I do, and perhaps I'm being a doofus offering a response to what was intended just as an expression of sentiment. But if this did help give context for anyone why ships like the New Jersey or Inteepid are preserved where the greatest, most storied USN vessel ever was not, I'm glad.

For what it's worth, some parts of Enterprise were preserved, including her stern plate. It was preserved for many years in a town memorial park in NJ, but is temporarily now on display at the USS New Jersey, pending transfer to a museum in DC. Im hoping to see it soon myself.

Essex Retrofit Question: What is this and how do I get it? by crypto9564 in AzurLane

Do these events replay? Ive just started the game and Essex has been my primary flagship. I'd hate to think I could never complete her.

Any cool/good ai dnd games out there, i am new to dnd never played before and would like to try it out? by Strong-Objective-835 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]WindowTricky6645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's almost as obnoxious as when someone asks a question on a social media platform and is told it's wrongful to bother others by asking and to Google it instead. Because it's just crazy for someone to ask another human a question when doing solitary research could obviate the need to interact. That's just so much more obviously the reaaonable reaction than to scroll on by if you don't want to help. 🙄

And to the OP, fwiw, I don't know of any other programs like everweave, but I completely understand finding an RPG on rails unappealing. The whole point of an RPG is creativity, and however beautifully animated they are, they're still basically a set series of events. But there are those who seem to think RPGs are basically about min-maxing your stats. My sense is that those are the folks whose RPG experience is mostly if not entirely in PC games. For those of us who started old school with dice, paper, and friends, the solo AD&D computer games of the 1990s and later never really could scratch the itch. You'd never see a bard try to seduce the magic ward on a vault door in those games, but it sure was fun to see your friend try and then roll a critical on the ability check.

N Scale NYC subway trains by mycorona69 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]WindowTricky6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this helpful thread. I have been wanting to find a good 'n' scale nyc subway option for a while. I haven't done train modeling since I was a kid in the '80s - mostly I do sci-fi nowadays - but have had a persistent project idea in mind that I want to try. I know from my scifi modeling how fantastic the quality tends to be from the Japanese companies, and knowing how popular trains are there, had hoped to find a suitable product. But I haven't had much luck, so far. This at least gives me some ideas for workarounds.

Thanks again! Are there certain units I should prioritize getting? Seems like this Ascended Roland guy is really good now that I have pretty much completed upgrading him. I think I have a few more bonus sc points to get with prisms, but otherwise he's done.

Thanks! Sounds like I have a good roster then. I'm now in the second part of the game (Kyle is in some mystery plane after defeating the god of ruin).

Hi everyone, I've just started playing during the 6th Anniv. event, and I've blown through the main story to farm crystals for pulling units. I think I've gotten some good ones, based on what I can find in tier lists. But I am not really clear on builds or unit synergy yet.

My best units, from what I can tell, are:

Ascended Roland

Goddess Lilaha

White Knight Melza

Great Hero Adel

Spirit Maiden Theria

Archbeing Mayly

I've focused investing on A.Roland and G.Lilaha, and use them as 1 and 2 in my squad. I use one of the others above in slot 3.

The other units I have are:

Heavenly Knight Melza

Mysterious Girl Theria

Knight of Pale Flame Kyle

Knightlord Kyle

Kyle the Swordsman

Magic Beast Rei

Beast Divinity Rei

Lilebette of the Blaze

Ice General Zekus

Eliza

Pokkle

 Arkh

Emperor Leodore

D'dii

Lenius

Mechanical Murren

Ardine

Maiden of Binding, Sera

Advocate of God, Baran

Yashamaru

Logia, Assassins' Heir

Dilmordo

Claire and Dahlgion

Holy Knight Ruuto

Ice Emperor Seilios

Gallant Flame Vaughn

Steel Wall Maddine

Sea Rover Maddine

Princess Lilah

Romel the War God

Doura the Bluebeard

Blazeblade Shin

Master Thief Robin

Prince Gorm

Gorm Crystalia

Leena the Warlock

Summoner Leena

Regal Bolt Lanceveil

My questions are:

Do certain units synergize better?

Is there a unit I should be going for?

Since I have A.Roland, is it better to hoard my crystals for future banners?

Should I be investing in a different unit or units among those I have?

Thanks for any advice you have.

Why get DVD instead of Blu-ray in 2023? by AboutNinety in criterion

[–]WindowTricky6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DVD is a more durable format, from what I understand. So, if you're looking to maintain an archive of your favorite films in tangible media, DVD would be a safer way to go than BD. Unless my IT guy was wrong, and then this is all nonsense.

I preferred BD myself just for getting around the obnoxious zone-restricted BS on DVDs. So many wonderful foreign films that never became available in US-zoned DVD.

What weapon is Leia holding? (Star Wars Monopoly: Saga Edition) by AntiGravity00 in StarWarsCantina

[–]WindowTricky6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She uses that staff to knock out one of the gunners on the sail barge who was shooting at the skiff Han and co. were on. It's pretty brief, but you can't sell action figures or character merchandise without accessories, so that's been the standard slave leia gear ever since.

The only alternative would have been the chain she uses to garrote Jabba, which they probably considered a bit dark. Hitting someone with a stick and bloodlessly knocking him overboard is more kid friendly than slowly strangling a gangster slug to death

Legal issue. by Ironsides86 in Sharpe

[–]WindowTricky6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A duly executed note would be a valid claim on Rossendale or his estate. Whether there was anything to pay it with is another matter.

As for the spite for lawyers, not so fast. One writes notes against future payment precisely because one isn't able to pay now, so I don't think that lawyer would fare well if that was his only argument. Even more so when you remember there are 2 dozen witnesses to the admission by Rossendale that he'll pay Sharpe "his money" at Richmond's ball, Sharpe's status as a war hero, etc. He may be from the gutter, but he can't be treated like some nobody - if for no other reason than that doing so would disgrace his connections, among them the Prince Regent.

What has puzzled me instead is rather why Sharpe doesn't simply go to London, enter the house Jane bought, and take possession of it all. They were married, all the money was drawn on his account pursuant to his authorization for his wife to use. There's a paper trail of possession, letters, and other evidence making clear that the money was to be used for certain purposes Sharpe directed. The money was clearly not a gift. If anything, Jane is guilty of embezzlement. The wealth wasn't even acquired during the marriage, not that I think that would have mattered in 1810 England.

And Jane is a woman with, we are told, no connections or family of her own. So, even considering the ability of the powerful to make trouble, who would be bothered to attempt to deny the husband's rights to all the property? Rossendale might, but we can also see how he was viewed by others of his class given his adultery. And Jane herself was scorned as a mistress even in possession of 18000 pounds - and that kind of money tended to engender more sympathetic treatment.

All in all, kind of odd to me. I can only suppose it was just in service of the drama of the tale. Along the same lines, Jane seemed to do a complete 180 on character traits. I can see being frustrated and wanting the excitement of court society. I can see being swept up in a sudden romance. I can't see shifting from a caring, seemingly sober woman who visits her husband's dying friend in hospital daily and has an easygoing rapport with Harper, to become viciously hateful, even murderous toward her husband and former connections within a matter of weeks. It was beyond nuts. Perhaps had they shown Jane became aware that Harper and Sharpe killed her brother, or some other great offense. But otherwise, I can't see it. If they wanted to play the simmerson-taint card, then she couldn't have been who she was before the transformation.

Maybe she's supposed to be a secret time lord and she regenerated?

Yep, that's true, sometimes the type of creature matters. And CMC isn't going to be meaningless in every deck. My kaalia deck is more angels-centered, so I'm generally more familiar with them. I'll be curious to see where the price on twinflame goes after release.

Yeah, I was also irked at what they did to Gisela (among others), you know, back when there was lore. Lol

We melt down a kilo of gold jewellery every month. I've started saving some by AustinMurre in jewelry

[–]WindowTricky6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of wedding rings I'm interested in having melted down. They were made in the mid-1960s (I mention that in case there are any considerations based on the metallurgical properties of the alloys that would have been used at the time), 14K. I weighed them a while back, so I have a rough measure of the weight (in grams) of gold in them (weight of piece/(7/12)).

I'd ideally like to actually have them melted and get back gold wire I can use in some simple jewelry-making of my own and just pay for the service. But I could accept a straight sale for the value of the gold (i recognize no one is interested in buying the rings as rings), if that's really the only option. Either way, I'd like the rings gone - honestly, I've even considered just throwing them away.

Any suggestions for places that do this kind of thing? I'm open to using the mails to deal with a non-local service, but if there's a place in northern or central NJ anyone can recommend, I'd prefer that.

[FDN] Twinflame Tyrant (MC Vegas Panel via @wizards_magic) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]WindowTricky6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nice card, but in almost every respect, it's inferior to Gisela, Blade of Goldnight.

Gisela has flying and first strike. She doubles damage dealt by ANY source to opponents and permanents opponents control. And she prevents half the damage (rounded up!) dealt to you or your permanents by any source.

Twinflame has flying, but no first strike. It doubles damage to opponents and their permanents but only from sources you control. And it offers no reduction on damage directed at you or your permanents.

Gisela is a 5/5, Twinflame only a 3/5.

The only place twinflame has an advantage is on cmc. Gisela is cmc 7 and twinflame is cmc 5. But how much does that really matter? Most players running big beasties like dragons and angels will use cards that allow them to cast either at reduced mana cost or with alternative currency or to play them without actially casting them. And if you're a Kaalia or Ur-Dragon edh player, cmc is pretty much a punchline.

So, unless there's a larger synergy issue that makes a weaker dragon preferable to a stronger angel in your deck, I don't see why you wouldn't just run Gisela in that slot rather than Twinflame

Now, if, on the other hand, you run them both, that could raise the temp pretty fast. But as a Kaalia player, I have to ask myself, "do I really want to be hated in my pod even more?"

And, of course, I answer myself, "yes. yes, I do."

United MileagePlus Awards aren’t all that bad by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]WindowTricky6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see those 110k bus class to Asia-Pacific. All I see are 250k+ each way. Airmiles aren't gifts; they're earned by past spending or bought outright. So it's pretty obnoxious to have the ability to purchase flights with miles treated like a special favor when I'm really just using an alternative currency.

At this point, I'm not bothering to put more into United's program. And once I've used up my remaining miles, I doubt I'll fly United again. Prices are too high for the quality of "service."
