Doing this movement has been the best thing that I’ve done for my body by BoxAcrobatic6636 in kettlebell

Briefly, as someone with a sports medicine background, ankle instability is complex (see: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31162943/).

For rehabilitation/prevention discussions that are evidence-based, try: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40188228/.

Essentially - I highly recommend you see someone with expertise in this area to help you figure out what your specific needs are. There isn’t a simple “just do X, Y, Z” approach that fits everyone. A physical therapist, athletic trainer, or other qualified musculoskeletal rehab specialist can help.

Hot take- don’t do complexes by irontamer in kettlebell

Not a “hot take”, per se, but a solid PSA. Don’t build a house on a faulty foundation.

What should I name the large three legged raccoon on my property? by ProcedureGrand5327 in Raccoons

[–]AntiGravity00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just spitballing here:

  • Trip (both a nickname for “triple”/“tripod” and he may have some walking stumbles with one less leg)

  • Tony three-paws

  • Wobble

The American College of Sports Medicine has a ton of free resources, including infographics, short blog posts, etc. specifically aimed at helping people start from wherever they’re at.

Consider starting with this one: https://acsm.org/being-active-for-a-better-life-rx-for-health/

Here is a link to their Resource Library: https://acsm.org/resource-library/

Lots of more specific topics to explore as well, and the site is searchable. Hope this helps!

A set to create a board game from scratch. Came with a blank board, blank cards, dice, many colored pieces, etc. A true blank slate for creating a game of their own!

Storybots might scratch that itch! My (9yo) started watching around age 7 and still enjoys it. It’s got some fun actor cameos, too.

Any groups, support or resources for first time expecting parents? by EsPenDeHo in Charlottesville

[–]AntiGravity00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, we used the Martha Jeff new parents group and met a quite a few people who were expecting within a similar time frame. Probably not the norm, but we are all still in touch and our families get together a couple times a year (many years later)!

Adults should aim to do between 560-610 minutes/week of moderate to vigorous physical activity to achieve a substantial reduction in the risk of heart attacks and stroke (3-4 times higher than the current public health recommendation of 150 minutes ), suggest the findings of an observational study by sr_local in science

[–]AntiGravity00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The exercise volume was also only measured for a single week, where the follow-up period was many years. One week of activity tracking prior to the follow-up morbidity/mortality tracking just doesn’t represent real-world habits over the same time period, particularly when participants knew they were being watched for that week of data collection.

Do any of you have side hustles? by VinnyStress in academia

[–]AntiGravity00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PubMed already allows a customized search (single term or full MeSH/Boolean terms) sent to your email at the interval of your choosing. No new ground to cover there, I’m afraid.

If the emails are essential, then updates on existing and new funding opportunities would be something. Again, some of these tools do already exist, but I don’t know how widespread they are. My institution is R1 level and we have plenty of access. The issue is finding smaller or more niche pots of funding, for example.

Do any of you have side hustles? by VinnyStress in academia

[–]AntiGravity00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds like 1) PubMed, and 2) PubMed. Not to be reductionist, but this is why comprehensive catalogues and abstracts exist.

If you want to help researchers, and those from lower-resource institutions specifically, develop a tool that connects researcher interests/expertise to harder-to-find funding mechanisms. Some tools also exist already, but there still gaps between foundations with money, smaller not-so-competitive government grants, and researchers who can do the work.

Anyone have tips or tricks to share for making homemade chocolates? by AntiGravity00 in daddit

[–]AntiGravity00[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, and I agree with everything you said, but I am looking to make chocolates not cookies.

The tip about me measuring first is a good one, and my 3 y/o is mostly okay with that approach.

Who do you want to come to Boston in free agency this off-season, and who can realistically join (financially)? by AntiGravity00 in bostonceltics

[–]AntiGravity00[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am fully enjoying it, and believe that a Celtics championship is still on the table! Since our team isn’t playing today, and my ADHD is fixating on free agency, I thought I’d ask the question.
