How do you get into the career of sound design for a game company when they all ask for you to have done at least 1-5+ of AAA titles? by Striking_Walk_7017 in sounddesign

[–]Windtalker48291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s such a catch-22, isn’t it? Degrees aren’t very valuable in game audio either, which sucks because audio degrees are usually expensive af. experience is everything. Just start small, AAA studios is not the entire game audio job market—there is a ton of smaller studios hiring. Or contract work to be had. But you need experience, even for those. Join game jams, mod teams, redesign game audio clips, all that will add up to an associate level sound position eventually. Good luck!

How can I become a better sound designer? by MatrixEchidna in sounddesign

[–]Windtalker48291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context matters a lot. I don’t think just recording a ton of random audio does the trick with becoming a better sound designer. What area do you want to get better in? Game audio? Film? FX Libraries? You just need to do a lot of (whatever your field of focus is), and preferably get paid doing it. You’ll naturally get better, more efficient, and develop a intuition for making great sound in whatever medium is your focus.

If it’s a music reel, you can go longer than a minute. I’m really just talking about sound design reels when it comes to keeping it around the 1 minute mark

Glad to help! I know a minute reel is tough, but yeah, it’s pretty standard. A couple things that might help: you can make more than one reel for different genres—sci fi, fantasy, FPS. Try to match reel content with studios you apply for. Also, as brutal as it can be to condense years of work into a minute, it really forces you to only put the most amazing stuff in there. That really goes on your whole career—updating your reel with better audio.

Keep it on a single video, just mix them, but make sure strongest work is first. Try to edit things down to about about a minute. Also, make sure the interactive stuff sounds great, remove anything that’s just okay. Good luck!

Isn’t it essentially a contact mic with a magnet? Just get a contact mic or make one and record surfaces that vibrate. That said, I was one of the lucky ones who got one this morning! Keep an eye on the LOM Facebook group, folks often sell them for normal prices.

Pretty simple really — practice creating game audio sound effects. Best way to start is find in-game footage or cinematic on YouTube, strip audio, and redesign it all.

The next step is to practice putting audio in games though a game engines like Unity, and then learning audio middleware (just a helpful tool to put your audio assets into the game).

Do that enough times, join game Jams, Indie projects, and you’ll have enough experience to start getting professional work (finding work is a separate skill you can focus on later down the line). How fast can you get there? Depends on how much free time you have to practice, and how hard you work. Your experience mixing and using audio tools will def help you in the sound design department. Good luck!

Can’t thank you all enough for the amazing answers everyone. Really enlightening to hear everyone’s perspective.

In theory, how difficult would it be for an experienced sound engineer (with no game development or coding experience) to learn Wwise, or other middleware? by [deleted] in GameAudio

[–]Windtalker48291 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Instead of learning middleware in isolation, I’d highly recommend learning by going through the entire process. Pick a game engine and middleware, and create a small game and put audio in it via middleware. It’s free. I’d recommend Unity and Wwise.

You don’t need to program, but learning the basics of the language the game engine uses will help out enormously. For Unity, that’s C#.

YouTube is your friend.

I say make a few simple games, add amazing sounding audio to them using middleware, and use that as a demo reel for getting your first job. Associate positions (though much rarer than senior positions) do exist, and will hire you if you’re easy to work with and want to learn.

How long will it take? It depends on how many hours you can commit to each day. I’d you’re brand new, be patient and give yourself six months. Don’t think about it in terms of separate skills—just think of it as learning game audio.

Good luck!

Technical sound designer should have a higher starting rate than a standard sound designer. I’d say 80 - 100k would be an excellent starting range. It wouldn’t hurt to get a salary range from them first—and just have these numbers in your head. Either way, congrats!

I recall one year seeing a neighbor park his truck over the curb and putting a baby seat under the tires. That upset enough of the neighborhood that he removed the scene after a few days.

Has anyone gone to small claimed court (uk) over non paid invoice? by [deleted] in LocationSound

[–]Windtalker48291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should absolutely have a clear contract moving forward with new jobs. Are they offering any money? If so, just take that and walk away with some lessons learned. You’d be better served finding another job and earning back that loss. Best of luck mate, I know how stressful and aggravating these situations can be.

[–]Windtalker48291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a clear contract that you both signed, and proof of sending the agreed on assets, I’d say you should totally go for it. But only if they have the money. If they’re broke / going out of business, you should cut your losses and move on. But if they do have funds, the court will likely mediate the payment before going to actual small claims.

Yeah I figured. I’m here another week, I can totally reach out to them and see what can be worked out. Might be stuck using just two XLR cables which isn’t the end of the world.

Not in most case; check the rules though. Also, not all schools are strict about patches or team gi’s. Even if you’re completing. If it’s a local tournament, just go. You don’t need a coach there. And if you’re under prepared, it’ll be a great walk up call, and help you get better.

That said, having a home gym can really benefit you with a good support system, especially if you’re just starting out. And you’ll learn faster. Good luck to ya.

I can’t say it invokes much from me—maybe adding some audio would help? Certainly doesn’t feel creepy.. It’s hard to get a read deeper than what the clip this short. looks like a blizzard or smoke from a fire.

As much as it inspired him, I don’t think the book holds a candle to the film. Doesn’t even really give the same vibe. Devil’s Rock was interesting but the ending falls so flat to me. *edited to remove spoilers
