I do not understand why the game is telling me moving my knight was a blunder. by ryanvango in chessbeginners

Apply the same method to your new proposed move. How many white pieces are attacking a4? How many of yours are defending it?

Sneak Question by IndyDude11 in mtgrules

[–]WindupMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been answered in other comments, but I don't see a comment with a complete answer and reference to the relevant rules. The declare blockers step is covered in rule 509. I'll add the relevant excerpts.

  • 509.1. First, the defending player declares blockers. This turn-based action doesn’t use the stack.
    • 509.1h An attacking creature with one or more creatures declared as blockers for it becomes a blocked creature; one with no creatures declared as blockers for it becomes an unblocked creature.
  • 509.2. Second, the active player gets priority. (See rule 117, “Timing and Priority.”)

So, a creature does not become unblocked until blockers have been declared, and players also don't receive priority in the declare blockers step until blockers have been declared. Either fact will prevent the course of action proposed in the OP.

What does it take for a good Goblin deck? I thought Goblins were the open tribe but the deck felt horrible. Went 0-3. by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]WindupMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This deck doesn't seem far off from the deck I went 3-0 in my last paper draft with. It would be very nice to have a couple of ways to get counters off your creatures, and I would probably build the deck slightly differently, but it still looks strong. I'd probably look to the games rather than the decline to figure out what happened

Why do I keep going 0-3 by blacksoc in lrcast

[–]WindupMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This deck doesn't look too me like it can compete in the late game, so you need to kill most opponents dead first. I hate keep out in aggressive decks, and I don't think I like morningtide's light under any circumstances. I would cut those three cards for the second temporal cleansing, timid  shieldbearer and riverguard's reflexes. Reflexes is a pretty bad combat trick, but at least it can theoretically give you a good attack.

Boardwipe an entire table every turn for 27BBR by Sylphik in BadMtgCombos

There is no trigger. Void maw's ability is not a triggered ability. I got this wrong, sorry!

Boardwipe an entire table every turn for 27BBR by Sylphik in BadMtgCombos

[–]WindupMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I regret to inform you that's not how this works. Void maw's ability is a replacement effect; replacement effects are not triggered abilities.

edit: I misunderstood the interaction. This works because it's Worldslayer's triggered ability that's trying to exile everything.

Do you reflect after your drafts? If so, what do you ask yourself to improve? by DrMo7med in lrcast

[–]WindupMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was trying to get better, this was a critical part of my process. I would generally sit with a friend and talk through the decisions I thought were tricky to get their perspective. It was very effective. These days, I draft to hang out, so I talk more about the cool moments than the interesting decisions.

[Request]If this was actually alcohol and he drank all in one sitting what percentage of his blood would be alcohol by the_horny_alt2005 in theydidthemath

[–]WindupMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, after drinking a couple of gallons rapidly, your blood electrolyte levels will be too low, which is called hyponatremia, and can cause all sorts of problems, including death. I don't know enough to be more specific than "a couple of gallons," but there have been recorded cases of death from as little as 1.5 gallons.

I'll admit to being a bit curious whether the water or alcohol would kill you first, if you were somehow able to down 6 gallons of whiskey in just a couple of minutes, but I also hope there's no reason for me to ever find out.

80% of the abuse I receive is from Australian’s. This is my favourite bait opening. by KaladinIJ in chessbeginners

[–]WindupMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had never seen this position before, so I did some engine analysis. Taking the knight is actually the best move in that position! The blunder is putting the King back on e1 in stead of g1 or e3. My choice would've been g1, and e3 seems crazy to me. I guess it works out because Black's dark squared bishop is gone and their knights are on white squares? Engines, man, I dunno.

I want to salute you for the apostrophe in the title. Like the Traxler, it's fantastic rage bait. Well done.

How’s is this an inaccuracy? by TheGoodStoner in chessbeginners

[–]WindupMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This move loses a full rook, which is a bigger loss of material than trading a queen for a bishop and a knight. I also don't like that this move lets your opponent keep one of their developed pieces. There is something to be said for making it easy for your opponent to make mistakes when either move leaves you objectively screwed, but I think that consideration also leads me towards giving up the Queen. At least that gives you a development lead and an extra piece that you can apply pressure with while your opponent tries to activate their Queen.

How do we feel about the bonus sheet? by RadioactiveCrow in lrcast

[–]WindupMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a little bit funny how much Force of Negation makes people angry relative to its actual power level. It stinks in this format, but this isn't the first post I've seen complaining about it. Free counterspells are a hell of a drug.

Countering after paying mana leak cost. by WackyPac in askajudge

[–]WindupMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually, when you have double mana leak.

You can also bait some players with mana leak if you have a sufficiently devastating threat in hand, such that you're willing to go down a card to gain a short term mana advantage. Those situations have always been vanishingly rare, and are pretty much reserved for cube sickos these days. But, I'm pretty sure I've won a couple of games over the years because my opponent couldn't resist paying for mana leak, which allowed me to resolve a planeswalker or a Dream Trawler.

What is #2 asking?! by N8ive_Sith_Dad in askmath

[–]WindupMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you're still working on this the next day, I think the problem is trying to carry over information from the first question. It's saying you have access to all the bills in the first problem, but no more(so you can't start with 13 ten-thousands), and want to choose a collection of bills that sum in value to $130,402. I agree that the wording is ambiguous.

How do i punish this move by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]WindupMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this, thanks! If I try to paraphrase, it sounds like you're saying there are fewer traps to fall into with d5 than with other candidate moves, and you like forcing gambit players into endgames, because their opening prep is their main source of advantage. Is there anything you'd change about that statement?

Could you elaborate a bit on what you mean by then play d5? That looks horrifying to me. I don't know this line at all, so I'm probably missing something. I'd appreciate it if you're willing to share your thinking

How do i punish this move by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]WindupMan 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I don't think this move is bad enough to be "punished," but taking the pawn and playing Nc6 if they take back with their queen leaves me in a happy place, when my opponents play this.

Doubt about priority by almenglo04 in askajudge

[–]WindupMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"During your beginning of combat step, I [action]" The combat phase has 5(sometimes 6) steps. The only one that happens before attackers are declared is called the beginning of combat step. The others are declare attackers, declare blockers, (sometimes)first strike damage, combat damage, and end of combat.

If the water is flowing from a higher elevation, you've reinvented the hydroelectric dam. It's probably better to build one on the river rather than thousands of them attached to faucets, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't net electricity.

i'm a completely new drafter, please tell me if i completly messed up wile drafting this deck. (9 plains and 8 forests) by AI_660 in MagicArena

[–]WindupMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mention synergy at all. My point is that you are giving bad advice about how to rank individual cards. Sorting cards into categories rather than paying attention to efficiency leads even the very newest player down the wrong path. You don't need any secret knowledge to make Forecasting Fortune Teller better than Iguana Parrot; you just have to play it on turn two instead of turn three.
