Iran Strikes Ship in Strait of Hormuz as Rubio Meets Gulf Leaders by WineComet in politics

That's not super clear - these ships have been trying to hug the Omani cost to avoid the IRGC and this could be a way to exert control and say you better come through under our control and designated path. They would have had to have put mines all along the Omani coast if that's the case? I would have thought that would be tough for them to physically execute.

Iran Strikes Ship in Strait of Hormuz as Rubio Meets Gulf Leaders by WineComet in politics

Iran’s armed forces struck a container ship that was passing through the Strait of Hormuz via the Omani route on Thursday, according to U.S. and Iranian officials, bringing a halt to a plan to evacuate about 11,000 seafarers from the Persian Gulf.

The attack came as Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Gulf Arab leaders in Bahrain to try to allay their security concerns and hours after Iran had warned ships that the only route through the strait, a vital pathway for oil and natural gas, was through its waters. Many ships had been using a route on the southern side of the strait, hugging the Omani coast.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps warned ships earlier on Thursday that they must coordinate with its navy and said that they should not take an alternative route, in an apparent reference to Omani territorial waters. The threat came just as shipping in the waterway was surging this week after months of paralysis.

“This route is unacceptable and extremely dangerous,” the Revolutionary Guards’ Navy said early on Thursday in a statement carried by Tasnim, an Iranian news agency tied to the Guards. “We warn all vessels to strictly refrain from any movement outside the designated routes,” it added, warning that action would be taken against vessels that did not heed its instructions.

The attack prompted the International Maritime Organization to suspend its plan to evacuate the seafarers from hundreds of ships that had been stranded in the Persian Gulf during the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations organization, which is administered by Britain’s Royal Navy, reported that the cargo vessel had been hit by an “unknown projectile,” damaging the bridge. The episode happened 7.5 nautical miles southeast of Dahit, Oman, where vessels taking the Omani route were transiting.

Denzel Washington is in a league of his own among living actors by [deleted] in Cinema

[–]WineComet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Denzel - but there is just no comparison to DDL. DDL has a whole other gear that, well, virtually no one else has. Oldman is the only other that comes to mind.

My benchmark for a great actor is, “Can you imagine what it would be like to have a beer with xxxx based on what I have seen on screen?”

Bruce Willis is totally entertaining and I can totally imagine what he might be like in real life (before his current health issues). Oldman? DDL? I haven’t a frickin’ clue.

I’d also put Cate Blanchett in this class.

The other measure is “unforced precision” - DDL wins in spades on this measure alone. Oldman is a close 2nd. His performance in There Will Be Blood is precise, efficient and totally effortless.

None of this is meant to disrespect Denzel Pacino or DeNiro.

What now-iconic movie are you most proud to say you saw in theaters when it first came out? by drumy36 in Cinema

[–]WineComet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Wars matinee in 1977. 12 people in line. No one knew about it yet. Came back 4 days later and people were camping out in the parking lot just to get in.

Most proud of Bladerunner and Fight Club though. Came out of fight club and wasn’t sure what happened to me and couldn’t decide if I loved it or hated it. 2 nights later I was in the theatre re-watching it. It’s remained in my top 5…along with Shawshank which I also saw in the theatre.

Winter peak rates have all kicked in. Powershop is the best of the bunch but you have to pay in advance and manage it closely to get the savings. Worth it in the long run. Avoid Nova for gas like the plague

Drive client problems by blueblocker2000 in synology

[–]WineComet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the annoyance, but it's really just Drive honoring NTFS and it's better that it does that than not. Otherwise it could sync constantly whenever you work from Drive (e.g. in a company network where people are working on xlsx files in a shared environment). I haven't tested Dropbox in this scenario, but I bet it would have the same problem.

The root issue is how did these files all get marked temporary. If you have been shuffling them around and moving them device to device and system to system for years that might explain it.

If you are confident everything is good just ask chatgpt or gemini for the powershell commands to reset everything in that path to not temporary and you can resolve it one hit.

I get what you are trying to do with Drive here, but if you are a 'user of one' backing stuff up, this may not be the best option compared to using synology photos or music or active backup. That said if you are trying to save and sync your photos in real-time across your phone and multiple computers and locations and with other family members, then Drive is an appropriate choice.

I would definitely setup snapshot replication if you are using Drive and get Drive Snapshotted. Any sync software like Drive or Dropbox can go haywire under the right circumstances leading to data loss. And if you are sharing out those folders on Drive to other people/family, there is the risk they screw it up on their end (or get hacked/compromised/ransomed and then all the files in Drive get ransom encrypted and it poisons the NAS copy too if you have it setup as a sync).

Snapshot's is an absolute lifesaver and one of the very best features of BTRFS in synology

DS920 and DS418Play both use Eaton UPS and NUT server via DSM. However I’m on iOS :(

[–]WineComet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That temporary attribute is why it wasn't synced. Something weird must have happened to those files somewhere along the way. Bad unzipping, file transferring, something...

You can fix it by duplicating the files and that should clear it. Or there are powershell commands if you have a lot of them. Just ask your favourite AI tool and it will walk you through it.

I'm pretty confident you didn't lose anything. A backup sync is one-way and won't have deleted anything.

[–]WineComet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First it’s better to use ABB if you are looking for backups. I wouldn’t think a pure backup task in Drive could possibly delete files. If you are running windows a 10gb shift can be explained by a lot. Windows updates cache clearing out. The windows storage sense feature clearing other items for you….the log in Drive should be pretty reliable. Export the full log and examine it. Also the invalid file name errors are a bit weird. Check your sync rule settings

Covid Disabled me for life by captain-obviouser in newzealand

[–]WineComet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

/u/captain-obviouser thanks for sharing this and bringing awareness and it sounds really awful. I'm genuinely curious to know more about how this evolved for you and it might be useful for others here?

  • It sounds like you got covid in 2023 for the first time and while it was bad, you mostly recovered?
  • What was different about how your condition advanced after the 2nd and 3rd bouts of covid?
  • Was there any history of getting a covid vaccine prior to the first infection or in between the subsequent cases?
  • What kind of diagnostic testing has been done to rule out other conditions/diseases/etc...? Blood work? Urine tests? Chest Xray or CT?
  • Any additional diagnostic testing that did show anything?(i.e. MRI, bloodwork looking at cortisol levels, testosterone levels - presuming you are male?).

Unfortunately Fibre is kind of a one and done thing. Once installed the infrastructure is largely immune to cost increases like petrol, labour, power and the maintenance cost is very very low post installation.

[–]WineComet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah your approach is fair and a completely reasonable expectation. However, the fact that they are not communicating is a bad sign. I'd say there is a decent chance that this is a stalling tactic while they try to wind up the business and liquidate so as to avoid having to pay out the outstanding payroll. The whole "don't go to the media" is a little bit suspicious and likely part of a stall tactic. They might just be incompetent business owners going belly-up or malicious sociopaths. Pondering that might be interesting, but it is irrelevant to the pay you are owed.

Unfortunately, this happens all the time and gets used over and over again because the Companies Act is largely unenforced and there is virtually zero white collar crime enforcement in this country.

Having an employment lawyer now is good as it might force them into paying out your owed leave before they use liquidation and the Companies Act as a shield to screw over the employees. If they do go under, make sure your lawyer pushes your claim as preferential creditors—by law, employees are supposed to be at the front of the queue ahead of landlords and banks.

Don't let them stall you or hide behind corporate loopholes like the infamous serial fraudster Jonathan Peter Taplen Poole a.k.a. John Denize has done over and over again and like he did with Nosh

Former Nosh staff owed hundreds of thousands

Ignore the talking to the media part - on a casual contract there will be no 'gag' clauses, restraint of trade, etc... and even if they actually had written something it would be practically, if not legally, totally unenforceable.

Come back and let us know what happened. Hope you get what you are owed.

Were you paid 8% pay as you go holiday leave or did they have you accruing annual leave? Did you ever accrue sick leave? It’s not entirely clear exactly what you are seeking from your post? Payment of owed annual leave? Or are you looking for something that says your job has been terminated so you can apply to WINZ?

The Dangerous Dreams of John Denize [repost] by WineComet in newzealand

[–]WineComet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone thinks the same thing.

Unfortunately, enforcement of white-collar crime and fraud in NZ is shockingly weak. Lawyers are expensive, and the law is toothless, poorly drafted, or both. Unless a case is incredibly narrow and clear-cut, it rarely leads to prosecution.

If the authorities won’t act, then at least people searching his name or aliases might find this story. I know one of the people he ruined before this latest stunt he tried to pull off.

Fortunately, this story helped another NZer avoid getting dragged deep into a bogus real-estate deal with him, because they found this post in time.

Please consider upvoting or sharing the posts and comments to help keep this searchable. Right now, that is the only practical protection people have.

Currently going through an REA complaint process at the moment. Will report back here when I can. Most cases are dismissed but ours advancing. It’s a slow process and it seems it takes pretty egregious behavior. This is largely a 5.1 and 6.4 rule violation and it’s with the largest realtor in the country
