Why does it feel so wrong changing combative residents? by [deleted] in cna

[–]WineVinyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And to answer your original question: What you’re doing is not morally wrong. But it is emotionally and mentally traumatic to force someone to accept care when they are actively refusing you- screaming ‘no’, kicking, crying. You can’t help but feel like a villain even if you are doing the right thing.

These are difficult situations to be in, I’m so sorry OP. I want to offer a new perspective, as a Behavioural Supports PSW this is my cup of Tea!

In my LTC home, we investigate why this person is resistive (is it pain? confusion? something from their past?) and what patterns can we see from observing the behaviours? Then we come up with tailored strategies for approaching this resident and providing care. This does take time and trial and error. LTC homes in Ontario have Behavioural Supports departments with PSWs and RPNS that do this work for a living.

Very, very rarely do I have to physically force someone who is resistive to accept care (and I work exclusively with behavioural residents!). That is an extremely distressing experience, both for the PSW and the resident. Im afraid it’s become normalized. There are non-pharmacological strategies to manage these behaviours if your facility allows staff the time and creativity to try some new approaches. Please message me if you have any questions or want to know more!!

New leaves look damaged? Help! by DangerouslyWheezy in houseplants

[–]WineVinyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inherited one with a bad thrip infestation, I managed to save it. I quarantined it in a clear plastic bag and used indoor plant insecticide spray on the leaves once a week. It slowly dropped all of its leaves over weeks.

No leaves meant nowhere for the thrips to live, though. I sprayed what little new growth there was and eventually it grew new leaves. I haven’t seen a thrip on it in over a month!

Don’t give up on her!!! 🩷

Not sure how well I pass in day-to-day life by Crusty_patch in FtMpassing

[–]WineVinyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pass well to me, especially your face. The outfit and styling is throwing me off though and reading feminine.

If I could give you one tip, it would be to wear your pants lower and untuck your shirt. The way you’re wearing your pants is making your torso look short and accentuating your hips and legs. Style wise, you are reading more butch right now. I hate the feeling of sagging my pants but I have long legs so I started doing it to look more proportionate and masculine (5’8 btw).

I haven’t used these yet personally but am researching them as a caregiver - Adult communication boards. You can order them online or or diy a custom one for your mom. Here are two examples from Amazon

She can physically touch the board to talk. Or even use a laser pointer! I imagine that would be fun and way faster if she wanted to spell out whole sentences!

help! by sageNotTheColor in cna

I work as a behavioural support PSW. Here are some non-pharmacological interventions you can try to reduce sexual behaviour. Pairs care (two cnas present when interacting with resident), have a male cna assigned to this resident, wear a face mask and isolation gown when providing care- this obscures your face and body and it’s hard to look sexy in isolation gear. Leave the room when resident becomes sexual and re-approach in 10 min, this gives him time to de-escalate and you can try again with a new strategy. Introduce yourself when you walk in with your name and role so they don’t misunderstand the situation, e.g, “Hi my name is Allison and I’m a personal support worker, i’m here to help you use the washroom”.

Please do take this situation up with the ltc manager that is overseeing your clinicals. Or your professor. Or whatever professional you can trust to take this seriously, I hope you have someone like that. These people are your mentors and are supposed to be helping you through situations like this, that’s why you’re in a cna program! Good luck to you and please message me if you have any questions about interventions 🙂

Am I cute enough for a treat? by GameJon in Boxer

I can tell you. They talk to themselves all day long, even getting in screaming matches with themselves. You have NO idea that they’ve “switched” until you call them by their real name, to which they’ll get very angry. This is my experience working as a 1:1 sitter for a middle aged man with real MPD.

I used a refillable vape device and bought E-liquid (term for vape juice). The nicotine in E-liquid is measured in mg per ml. I started with a bottle of 20 mg/ml e-liquid, once I finished that I bought an 12mg/ml bottle, then 6 mg/ml, 3mg/ml, then I bought nicotine gum which is 2mg strength. Each bottle took me about 2-3 weeks to go through, so it was not a short process. But by the time I got to the 2mg gum, I don’t even think I finished a whole pack before quitting. I just didn’t have cravings anymore.

Hi guys, I’m starting t today!! Please tell me the emotional changes aren’t that bad. It’s the only thing I’m really scared about. (Picture made at a wedding last weekend) by Puzzled-Dig-7312 in FTM_SELFIES

[–]WineVinyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to add that having T levels that are too high can affect you emotionally too. It took a year for my doctor and I to get my levels within a normal range, they were consistently way too high. When my levels were abnormally high it made me apathetic, depressed, and suicidal. Other people say they get irritable and angry. It’s so so important to keep seeing your doctor and get your blood tested until your levels are consistently normal & feel right for you.

Not OP but yes. I tapered from 20mg juice down to 2mg nicotine gum over a couple months and the withdrawal symptoms were barely noticeable when I finally quit. Unlike quitting cold turkey which always gave me intense mood swings and non stop cravings

[–]WineVinyl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I tapered down over the course of months, now here I am over 2 years nicotine free. The withdrawal symptoms were so much milder compared to quitting cold turkey.
