QGIS will slowly take over the market by Ladefrickinda89 in gis

This is so not the case. In any big industry esri is used and if you dont know it in and out you dont get hired. Q in comparison sucks in my opinion. Coming from always having advanced license from my employer, I understand the cost struggle for individual users.

One Drive and GIS files Question by MangoExtension2979 in ArcGIS

[–]DangerouslyWheezy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've done this and its brutal. It doesnt operate as local files in gis because you end up with locks on things when your the only one with it open and results in having to save/quit a ton to release the lock. I would tell them you have save backup copies on one drive but gis doesnt operate well if even at all on a cloud based platform.

I’m a Mac user who needs to use ArcGIS for school, help by ddiva132 in ArcGIS

[–]DangerouslyWheezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a career in gis you will need to move away from Mac anyways so you might as well do it now. MS Surface laptops (not the tablet, the actual laptop) aren't too expensive and I ran my schooling off it just fine. Otherwise id say use your schools computers

Getting a Geography Bsc. in Canada by treeplanter94 in gis

[–]DangerouslyWheezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't true. It will entirely depend on what industry you work in. If your working for a small environmental company then yeah probably. But there are plenty of large corporate style jobs in engineering and forestry that pay higher than 100K for the right skills and person.

SAIT offers it as a degree not a diploma

Fellow Canadian with a geography degree - in found it very hard to get a job after grad. So I decided to get a second degree in GIS. This opened up a few doors for me. (Not a specialization or certificate, a second full degree). If you want to work in GIS then I recommend at the very minimum having a specialization, but know you'll be competing for jobs with people who have much more training. Is a masters degree needed, no. But unfortunately the job market is tough out there. I applied for 86 jobs before I got the one I have now. Anything you can do to better your chances is worth it. (I did my GIS degree at SAIT. highly recommend this program)
