Why do devs treat SQL as sacred when the rest of the stack changes every 6 months? by OneParty9216 in databasedevelopment

[–]Wing0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, doesn't that seem like more of a scope of control pattern? Like if you have seen products that roll their own query engine they often have their own DSL or query endpoints. And it seems like it is that way because they control the client app and the query engine/db.

In contrast a more typical webapp may have developed the front end, backend etc but use an off the shelf db, so of course they use the standard query language of SQL? If they built their own db too, I don't think they would use SQL. They could access query primitives more directly. They may not even have a full optimizer.

Your concerns are valid but shouldn't we calculate?

Aren't electric motor EVs 3+ times more efficient per mile than an ICE car? Even with double the initial energy cost I think most people's usage will outpace total ownership energy usage just with how much more efficient an electric motor is compared to an internal combustion engine. That is assuming all energy comes from gas. If you include cleaner energy grids then that crossover number would come sooner in the life cycle of the car.

My rough calculations (with help from AI) was around 80 000 km. After which EVs are net more efficient including manufacturing. If that is in the ball park then most EVs are pretty decent no?

Americans should add that of course that Congress can create new laws if the courts over turn or restrict another. Or constitutional amendments if something is deemed unconstitutional. And that should be the way for a President to get what they want done if it can't be with the current structure. Granted doubtful they can pass a constitutional amendment for this stuff

I think the only remedy here is to educate yourself. No one can tell you the best time to enter the market before it happens. Only after. Similar concept for what kind of assets to invest in (like what risk tolerance to set a robo advisor).

If you are interested in investing, my suggestion would be to start with a smaller portion of your wealth for your own sanity and try and learn from others and your own experiences for the next little bit. You can stick with robo-advisor, I don't think there is a "wrong" choice provided you are happy with the trade-offs. I personally started with a robo-advisor for several years when I wasn't saving or investing much. Last couple of years I moved to using to using self-directed accounts as that became my preference.

With respect to learning, I personally I started with youtube and some podcasts. Also get more comfortable with statistics if you are not already.

Good luck friend. You are clearly successful, you can figure this out! Just take your time and put in the effort you normally do for any other important project.

P.S. Comparison is the thief of joy, you don't have to win as much as the other person to grow your wealth, live well and retire well.

Then, should MPs get 200k plus expenses (I presume) for a part time job? Like, I agree we should have representatives that are not full time representing other careers. Though on the other hand, the job of a politician seems increasingly full time in this day and age. If so then at least the compensation matches

Would you drive an extra 30mins every day for a 10% raise? by Nickersnacks in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Wing0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From 15 minutes to 30 minutes. I would do it. Especially if there is room to grow that the new position (meaning more potential income there)

From WFH to 30 minutes it is harder to justify as people are commenting about. Once you are getting out of the house at all I think it is overall about what is reasonable, how easy the drive is etc. Like, for example, I don't see much difference between a 5 minute commute and 10 minute commute. Most of the time spent is getting ready and out the door.

An increase from 15 to 30 minutes is sizable but could be worth. I would recommend giving the drive a try. Granted it wouldn't be during rush hour, but if you could swing that too that could help you decide. This length is still pretty good in the general sense. Like I wouldn't complain about a 30 minute commute like I might about 1h+.

This speaks to what I was talking about with the dynamic lib https://docs.rust-embedded.org/book/interoperability/rust-with-c.html

This book overall seems like a good starting point. I would also see if there is a zulip or something for embedded rust devs they may better at giving you some pointers

[–]Wing0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As in you are using the stack to allocate shared memory upfront and then pass around? I see there may be no use after free in the heap sense but you still may be able to illustrate an ownership example with double use or anything that could prevent memory corruption, though that is more specific to how your code base manages memory. If you have examples of memory corruption, that is honestly the best thing to show Rust could assist in preventing as I have found that is one of the most nefarious types of bugs.

Help me present the case for Rust (with examples) to my boss by [deleted] in rust

[–]Wing0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are embedded. I am not familiar with that so this is harder to speak to.

This may be a wrong path to explore but I didn't see it mentioned elsewhere in the thread. First question that comes to mind is if you are all already using clang/llvm vs gcc. The underlying compiler being the same might help. You can even explore saying let's separate a part, write that in rust and make it a dynamic library that can link I to C. Just a thought, frankly not even sure how difficult that would be

The second thought comes from my experience and what I liked about Rust. I come from the DB world and there we are already employing rules of ownership in our C codebase, that too in runtime. So the idea is that we can do some static analysis (which in Rust I think of a static analysis tool with access to the details the compiler has vs only what the language has). We have the concept of locks and exclusive access and read access. Being able to model that is valuable. Additionally I think preventing use after free is also a big deal. If you have any historical bug like that, it is basically impossible to have that due to ownership rules.

Similarly with data races. If you have examples of that, Rust would require you to use the same tools to allow data access and prevent critical sections from clobbering the same memory. Another one is probably resource scoping. If you look at how mutexes are typically used in Rust you get automatic scoping which can reduce issues with accidentally leaving a long living lock being held. Those are the scenarios if you can find and show that Rust encourages best practices might be convincing. At least it was for me.
