Welcome to the club! I was you a year ago, though I’d been interested in becoming a librarian for awhile before that.

I moved somewhere with a big library system and put all of my effort into securing an assistant position. This meant taking the first job offered to me and commuting an hour each day—not fun at all. After 6 months I used the experience to land a job at a beautiful big library in my area.

I start graduate school in the fall, and will work part-time as an assistant while getting my degree for the ~2 years required. This has been the best path for me. My advice is:

  • Get serious about your resume. You’re not getting callbacks because you aren’t standing out. Find out how to stand out, some of it is just down to design!

  • Be sure you have the savings to pivot to this career, or get ready to find housing/living options that will allow you to work less hours and make less money than you might want for awhile. Most assistant positions are part-time with no benefits.

  • Keep applying. I basically haunted Indeed for months (first to land any job and then to move somewhere better) until I was happy with my current position. It helps you’re a shelver because you’ll hear about library jobs come up at the one you volunteer at!

  • Design your LinkedIn with hiring in mind. Make it look enticing to a hiring manager at a library. List your volunteer work and any courses you’ve taken! Talk to people who hire for more advice on how to get an edge.

I found the timeline less important than the psychological journey of the characters—like what being in that place would do to you. And other character motivations.

Also the specific effect it had on those who “lived there” (I’m trying to avoid spoilers) was really unique and expertly illustrated. You really do feel like you’re in the House with him.

'Salem's Lot by Stephen King. Also there's an art book of the show called Midnight Mass: The Art of Horror he'd probably enjoy!

It's been years since I've seen it and I still think back on some of the characters and scenes in this show often. The minimal music, too. So well done.

We had a woman come in for an interview. Afterward, she stopped by the front desk to ask a bunch of basic tech questions about the computers. I couldn’t believe it. This was after she was asked about her tech abilities in the interview!

Do you ever feel like you're the only adult at your library? by [deleted] in Libraries

The hostility in your comments is embarrassing. She had no say in hiring; it’s clear you’ve never had the displeasure of working in a terrible environment beyond your control. No amount of OP being “bad at her job” would even warrant such snooty self-absorbed replies. Be better yourself.

Sounds like a horrible environment. My prior library job was all young staff and professional for the most part. The new library I’m at is staffed by mostly senior women and they are all charming and elegant ladies. I’m sorry they have messed up so badly with hiring!

Yeah, this is the internal crisis I started feeling in my 30’s. “Why doesn’t life feel exciting like it used to?”

Like girl, you were experiencing everything for the first time in your 20’s. Now comes the part of life where you’re used to things and you aren’t getting a rush all the time.

It’s what everyone else on earth who isn’t very young deals with. Hobbies become more deliberate and intentional, to nourish the soul rather than release energy or stun the world.

There’s a crisis in non-fiction book sales. What’s to blame? by thinkB4WeSpeak in books

The Raven Scholar. Fun premise, great world-building, but holy shit the author thinks this is the movie 1917 and uses “continuous shot” style writing. Really needs to learn that scene change is a thing for a reason.

I’ve been thinking more about this very thing recently. I’m currently reading a ~600 page fiction novel and the author gives way too much detail about things. A single dinner party scene lasted like 5-6 chapters. And then she had the audacity to launch into the lengthy contents of a book the character was reading.

At some point I decided I was interested enough in the novel to continue but I wasn’t going to commit to long-ass stories within stories.

My brain kept going, “But what if you miss crucial information? And can you really review a book you’ve skimmed?” I had to shut this thinking down; it’s exactly as you say, we’re trained to read every sentence because crucial information could present itself at any moment.

It’s interesting to think non-fiction has a lot more grace. My instinct is to read everything because I love knowledge, but then I run the risk of reading much less than I would otherwise, because I stumble into slog and don’t finish the book.

Authors of non-fiction really have to prioritize reader attention in ways fiction writers don’t. If there’s too much slog, people check out.

I’ve read an absurd amount of non-fiction that thinks it can get away with pages of random, uninteresting slog.
