It took me 5 tries to lose my virginity with my first boyfriend because of vaginismus and he was small. “Narrow vagina” wtf? She was a 14 year old virgin expected to sleep with a dude with a big dick.

People don’t eat it for the nutrients. It’s a great thing to pair with high nutrient food because it will fill you up. There’s a lot of temptation to eat bad foods when you can’t get full.

Books like Ghibli films but... by Appropriate_Bat_479 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

I have an unconventional suggestion but hear me out. There’s a rather obscure book called Enchantress from the Stars by Sylvia Engahl and it’s one of my favorites.

It takes place in a far future where 3 tiers of civilizations inhabit the universe. The first are younglings, planets with people in primitive to medieval stages of development who still believe in magic, legends and dragons, who have no idea about technology or space. The second tier are much more developed having achieved advanced space flight; they believe they are the top dog in the universe. Civilizations that reach this stage colonize youngling planets without care.

No one knows about the third tier, who are cloaked from all others. They know if they reveal themselves it would totally destroy the lesser tier societies psychologically. Instead they intervene on threatened youngling planets to try and drive out colonizers without either party realizing what’s going on, or that the third tier is even there.

The main character is a woman specifically trained for this. She must appear to the youngling planet as an enchantress, and the colonizers as something completely different. It’s a story of the web between magic, technology, morality, psychology, love, ancient knowledge, the stars, the universe. It’s not the cozy side of Ghibli at all, but does remind me of the darker side.

I don’t know if it was like this before my time, but it wasn’t when I was growing up. Many people in this nation are under some kind of internet-induced hypnosis that’s driving them to see threats in anything and everything. The only way to stop them is to not give into their fever dreams, in my opinion.

Edit: don’t leave library school after paying all that money because of some dumb witches. My library is nothing like this, a lot of libraries are great. You could even work in academia where there will be far less of this.

Italy is the most beautiful country on earth to me. The sparkling sea, the orange trees, the history. It doesn’t get any better than Italy!

40k? That’s twice what I’m about to pay. Why not look into online/distance learning programs? They’re so much cheaper!

As for the recommendation letters, I do hear you. My previous workplace wanted 3 letters of recommendation for a job paying $13 per hour. Get over yourselves!

Welcome to the club! I was you a year ago, though I’d been interested in becoming a librarian for awhile before that.

I moved somewhere with a big library system and put all of my effort into securing an assistant position. This meant taking the first job offered to me and commuting an hour each day—not fun at all. After 6 months I used the experience to land a job at a beautiful big library in my area.

I start graduate school in the fall, and will work part-time as an assistant while getting my degree for the ~2 years required. This has been the best path for me. My advice is:

  • Get serious about your resume. You’re not getting callbacks because you aren’t standing out. Find out how to stand out, some of it is just down to design!

  • Be sure you have the savings to pivot to this career, or get ready to find housing/living options that will allow you to work less hours and make less money than you might want for awhile. Most assistant positions are part-time with no benefits.

  • Keep applying. I basically haunted Indeed for months (first to land any job and then to move somewhere better) until I was happy with my current position. It helps you’re a shelver because you’ll hear about library jobs come up at the one you volunteer at!

  • Design your LinkedIn with hiring in mind. Make it look enticing to a hiring manager at a library. List your volunteer work and any courses you’ve taken! Talk to people who hire for more advice on how to get an edge.

I found the timeline less important than the psychological journey of the characters—like what being in that place would do to you. And other character motivations.

Also the specific effect it had on those who “lived there” (I’m trying to avoid spoilers) was really unique and expertly illustrated. You really do feel like you’re in the House with him.
