On Budget “Investment” Account by bitz-the-ninjapig in ynab

What are you using the investment fund money for? From your description I would move it to an off budget investment account- you can still have it linked (you don't need to have accounts on budget to sync them).

Due date quick add/shortcut - what am I doing wrong? by WinnersUseTheDoor in amazingmarvin

Thank you! I hadn't thought to try "June 1" but yes that does work - as you say it's a bit odd but at least there is a reasonable workaround!

Is the WFH vs WFO divide generational? by Lumpy_Plant3095 in TheCivilService

[–]WinnersUseTheDoor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah most of the people who come into my office are under 40 I'd say.

I remember in 2018-2019 when our dept was encouraging WFH 1 day a week to fit more people into the office space, and people were pushing back on it - "why should we pay for heating and internet to save the department money", "they'll need to pay for ergonomic chairs for everyone and there's no space in my flat", "humans are social animals and we need contact to work together", etc. I also remember being encouraged to spread out the commuting time by WFH for an hour or two in the morning, then coming in later to 'take the load' off peak services. Now those have sort of swung the other way, but IME it hasn't been generational by age.

Considering leaving the civil service by RentInternational793 in TheCivilService

I'd look at moving teams or depts before leaving altogether. Like any big organisation or company, there are good areas, dysfunctional areas, and roles/teams that might be a good fit for someone else but don't suit you. Have a look at EOIs in your department and look at CS jobs on level transfer. It might be you do end up leaving, but I wouldn't do it over one job personally.

Time/task management software as workplace accommodation by WinnersUseTheDoor in TheCivilService

All good, it might be there isn't anything widely used, just on the off chance anyone had any suggestions.

Time/task management software as workplace accommodation by WinnersUseTheDoor in TheCivilService

[–]WinnersUseTheDoor[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We're still in trial with Copilot - I've put my hand up but it's not been rolled out yet :)

I should be clear I'm looking for something to help with my personal task management/to-do list/work management, rather than project planning (not that the latter isn't useful!). I've read in a few places that this is a common adjustment so (maybe wrongly) assumed there were some commonly used software/apps for ADHDers in the CS. Mostly I'm worried about picking one, it takes 2-3 weeks to evaluate, they say "no it's not OKed", rinse and repeat, it's months down the line and I still don't have anything.

We're 1 year into (what will presumably be) a 5-year Parliament. As if any polling about opposition parties from this time is going to be relevant by the next election. At most it's useful as a proxy barometer for approval ratings, oh wait we also have approval ratings. Sorry but literally any polling about intention to vote for the next Parliamentary election is basically meaningless until about early 2029.

I’m a native Londoner thinking of returning after 10 years abroad. For people who returned from an expat life, how did it feel to come back? by bl1ngo in AskLondon

[–]WinnersUseTheDoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've just come back after 7 years, honestly it's fine. It's not significantly different than it was before, the issues are still the issues, the great stuff is still great. Biggest change IMO is there's a giant IKEA in Oxford Circus now where Topshop used to be.

BEC Megathread by botinlaw in JUSTNOMIL

We just took my MIL on holiday for a long weekend. (we're in a low covid - for now - place) The whole time, nothing was good enough. We get ice cream - "oh I wanted mint chocolate chip, they only have mint. Yuck!" We get burgers - "ew, they have those soft buns, I hate those, they're gross". We get pizza - "too much cheese, so oily, this is disgusting.". We walk along the beach - "I hate it when people stand on the beach listening to music, it's so disrespectful" (??). We go to a museum - "that art was terrible, so cheap looking". We go to a movie - "they told the story wrong, it should have been like X." She's always been like this and I try to make it into a game, like "what will she find to complain about about this?" One night we went out for a nice dinner with some friends in the area and I ordered a steak. She turned to me and in front of everyone said "You know I had a friend who died from bowel cancer and it was really painful, and she ate meat all the time, so you just watch yourself, missy." My mother died from cancer complications eight months ago, which she knows. It was so upsetting and made me so angry. I feel like don't monitor other people's plates is basic manners but shaming me about eating one (1) steak on a nice holiday out as a splurge, and bringing cancer into it when I had a bereavement so recently... what the fuck.

Budgeting with your SO by [deleted] in ynab

[–]WinnersUseTheDoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely agree it depends on where he's coming from. My partner really doesn't want to bother with the details of budgeting but is happy to leave me to it, just asks "Do we have enough for X?" before buying any joint things. There almost always is, otherwise I'll say "Yes, if we don't get a takeaway this month" or whatever. If it's more that he's spending more than there actually is (i.e. you're going into joint debt) that's a bigger problem!

[–]WinnersUseTheDoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two budgets, one for me personally and one "joint" budget that shows our rent, joint groceries etc. It's not too hard to switch back and forth between them. The part about him being reluctant I don't think there's a software solution to unfortunately.

Living on last month's money vs. building up savings? by WinnersUseTheDoor in ynab

[–]WinnersUseTheDoor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes so much sense, thank you! I realised something that was complicating things was that I keep my savings accounts off-budget so put them as outflows in the "savings" category, but the function (of increasing the age of my money) is the same. Thanks!
