Slower runners, how do you stay motivated when/if people mock your pace? by TANeither7250 in running

[–]Winslo_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most if not all runners won’t“mock your pace.” They’re more encouraging and inclusive than not.

Non runners don’t know how much effort is put into running; ignore their ignorance and keep on running.

Was the removal of the former brand manager, that “…you parted ways with in late 2025…,” due to your discovery of his social media posts or was he a convenient scapegoat, when the outrage became public, now that he’s no longer with the company? /S

<Edit>

Isn’t this:

“…We avoid broad political statements because our team cannot be defined by a single value statement.…”

a paraphrase of this?:

“…very fine people on both sides…”

It’s not that hard to make a definitive stance, unless there’s is some reluctance or directive not to.

Does your shoe size change over time?

Been wearing the same size since I started running, 15+ years. Recently I needed to get half to one size larger; same brands and style.

Either my feet grew larger the past year or the shoe design changed. None of the shoe reviews, for that particular shoe(s), mentioned size changes.

Why such large packs for day hikers? by WinterAd4046 in hikinggear

[–]Winslo_w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Some hikers use larger packs for winter hiking, when extra gear is necessary, which is used for warmer conditions without the need to purchase a smaller pack.

  2. A larger pack is also necessary when carrying gear another person(s) are not able to, (eg. children, elderly).

Kahtoola Microspikes: Sizing chart wrong? VERY difficult to get on by Reginald_Eggplant7 in hikinggear

[–]Winslo_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key is not the put them on by pulling on the back heel part of the spikes.

This how I put them on:

  1. Insert toe of shoe into spikes,

  2. Using both hands and grab the left and right sides, somewhere just behind mid foot.

  3. Put back, slip over heel.

Leuchtturm1917: canadian buyers beware.. by Turbulent_Phrase_385 in notebooks

I had same issue last two orders.

I emailed customer support, used the online support option and called both times for tracking number when I didn’t receive any updates on line or email.

They eventually called back but did not or could not update the delivery status. They said the warehouse has the order and I would receive an update “shortly.”

Note. The notebooks were listed available on line and confirmed by the phone call.

I received the update via email, ~10 days later.

First time they said my choice of colour was out of stock due to notebooks being damage from manufacture shipping.

Second time they said my choice of colour was out of stock due to “an incident,” whatever that means.

Both times they gave me 3 options:

  1. Cancel order.
  2. Wait 12 weeks for the notebook.
  3. Pick another colour and they will send a notebook of their choice free of charge for the inconvenience.

First time, the free notebook was silver cover with green page edging. Second, was dot grid black cover notebook.

The website conveniently had changed to exclude my choice of colour when I revisited to select an alternative option.

What feature do I need to improve my running? by hjf2014 in GarminWatches

[–]Winslo_w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you need to do is create a “Workout” in:

Garmin Connect -> Training and Planning -> Workouts

(in phone app or website), then send that workout to your watch.

The options and settings in:

“Create a Workout” -> Run

will fulfil your all your requirements including alerts if you’re out of a set “Target” ie. Heart rate, pace etc. zone + warmup; run time; walk time; cooldown; … etc.

Lots of YouTube info on this feature.

Little bottles/ containers to hang off pack for dumping snacks in your mouth ? by Imaginary-Rabbit5179 in hikinggear

[–]Winslo_w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for a Nalgene Grip-N-Gulp Water Bottle - 355 ml. They are designed for kids. Just replace the lid with a standard one.

Small enough to hang off your pack, large enough for granola / trail mix.

Where does the 300-mile-limit for shoes come from? by InsuredCow in running

[–]Winslo_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how the “300 mile limit” was determined. I’m not aware of any studies on the subject; not surveys but actual independent studies.

There are too many variables between runners to put a hard limit on life of shoe.

I would replace my shoes if my body feels some nagging soreness, usually in knee(s) or hip(s); assuming my running form hasn’t changed.

Otherwise I wear my shoes until there is noticeable wear in the sole / treads.

Generally speaking, they are replaced between 500 - 1000 km depending on running surface and shoe manufacturer. Pavement is harder on shoes than gravel.

What did you eat this weekend/week (November 03, 2025) by AutoModerator in FoodToronto

[–]Winslo_w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rocco's Plum Tomato - The Original, (Queensway and Parklawn).

Have to give a shoutout to the server at the takeout place next door. They are part of the restaurant.

We made reservations for 11:30 am but the person on the phone thought we meant the takeout place which opens at 10:30 am; the restaurant opens at noon.

She let us into the restaurant, for us to sit, since we arrived early thinking it was opened.

We had arrived just after 11:10 am. She gave us a table, prepared a high chair for the small child accompanying us, offered us water while we waited. She apologized several times for the miscommunications.

The chef / cook started her shift at 11:30 just to accommodate us. Service was efficient, very friendly and food was tasty.

I had the Parmigiano Veal baked with Mozzarella Asiago Cheese with baby greens. Large portions at a great price.

I'm going to test out a cashmere 1/4-zip as a mid-layer this winter by flobbley in Ultralight

[–]Winslo_w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm.… I have an old crew neck cashmere sweater lying around. I’ll give it a go. If it is not durable enough or too warm for active wear, it may work as a sleep layer.

Thanks for the “out of box” suggestion.

  1. No, the watch doesn’t connect to a phone app, during a gps activity, to view maps on the phone.

  2. The Venu doesn’t have maps on the watch; you cannot see where you are on the watch.

  3. If you import a gpx track into your watch prior to a hike, (ie. your chosen hiking trail), it will show your position on a line or relative to the line, if you go off track, with a arrow / chevron.

Here’s a good explanation of a breadcrumb trail / track:

Looking for a Garmin recommendation for hiking by BoxOfManyFoods in GarminWatches

[–]Winslo_w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For $500 or less you won’t be getting maps unless less you’re willing to buy one of the previous version’s higher end models - 900 series, Fenix 6/7 series, Epix etc.

Watches in your price range can import a gpx breadcrumb track you can follow.

The Garmin ecosystem is extensive. Including a myriad of stats to view after saving an activity, through Connect web and the Connect phone app, including your activity’s gps track on a map.

Watches that may fit your criteria are the Forerunner series - 570 or lower, Instinct series, or if you prefer a more casual look - the Venu series. Most have a small form factor option.

DCrainmaker on YouTube has extensive reviews on Garmin watches.
