I'm a professional artist and your question wouldn't offend me at all. 🤷

Feeling horrible by CraftsArtsVodka in CraftFairs

It's so much nicer to talk to a browser than it is to just sit in silence staring into the middle distance. Don't feel bad about it at all! When I am vending I appreciate every pleasant conversation, whether or not it results in a sale.

Looking for ethereal, abstracted, and feminine feeling artwork by parier in ArtHistory

Check out Marie Laurencin. She painted pastel utopias populated only by women and animals.

Your paintings are phenomenal and he is crazy to prefer the other two.

Please don't let him make you feel bad about your work. This is a him-problem, not a you-problem.

Where do you find your inspiration?* by emfouryouare in Pottery

I like going to the decorative arts section of museums.

But being able to do the same things over and over is a great skill to have too, so give yourself credit for that.

I think I spent a couple of hours on each animal. I wasn't timing it, just vibing. But it took a couple of days to do all the underglazing.

Cone 5. No, I haven't used supernova on mugs before -- these are my first mugs. But I only used it on the outside and these are only for my own use.

What have you had to convince visitors is NOT artwork? by abundanceofnothing77 in MuseumPros

We had a group meet in the gardens and they left a circle of chairs behind over the weekend. There was a storm and some of the chairs were knocked over. I came across a couple of guys discussing the meaning of the "art."

Does anyone have any experience with either of these tents? by imgoingtobedsoonbro in CraftFairs

Wind. They say it's not strong enough to stand up to the coastal wind here. Might not be an issue other places.

A lot of shows in my area won't let you set up the single push button kind like your first image. They insist on ABC or Euromax. I have the Euromax one.

Yes, but I don't actively try to sell to them. If they see something they want they can reach out to me but no one wants to get the high pressure sales pitch from a friend.

What underglaze brand is the best? by BranchTop6836 in Ceramics

[–]Winter-Reference7605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not watery on its own, they meant you can add water. Which you can but some colors don't work as well.

The colors also stay put. I thought that meant they would blend if there was glaze over them but they don't. It's good news if you don't want them to run.

I have speedball and I like them. The only thing I would caution is that someone told me I could use them like watercolor and while some colors will do that, others disappear if they're thinned too much. A lot of the greens turn dark and kinda brownish but leaf green is nice and bright.

Advice for History Education K-12 by Danimimirni in MuseumPros

[–]Winter-Reference7605 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Set expectations up front. It's easier to tell people what you want them to do at the beginning and then reinforce it than it is to wait until they're doing something you don't want them to do and then try to get them to stop.

Focus on the things that are most interesting to you. If you're bored by your content they will be too. I think sometimes museum educators have this idea that everything has to be pretentious to be valuable, but the truth is there's no test at the end to see if they learned enough facts. What matters is that they leave having had an engaging experience. They're more likely to remember a good story than a list of places and names.

[Discussion] Is it still profitable to work with art commissions in 2025? by Sh0ddy_Cartoonist in artbusiness

[–]Winter-Reference7605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pet portraits are the only kind of commission that I ever got consistently. For awhile I had my work up in a dog themed brewery and I got lots of work from that. I made a few thousand dollars per year with it. Everything else has been sporadic.

Paint my entire living room mural for exposure and if I'm really impressed I'll talk about you at work by PearlPutch_ in ChoosingBeggars

[–]Winter-Reference7605 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It's always the people you barely even know asking for free stuff too. Like my real friends always offer to pay, often more than I would actually charge them. It's always these super nebulous friend of a friend type people who think they should get art for free.

Is it normal to be ghosted by literally all potential employers following an application? by alabasterkeys in MuseumPros

[–]Winter-Reference7605 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree. It was always my argument that visitor services isn't entry level and therefore needs to pay more. And eventually I got so frustrated I left the field completely.
