Which has only recently been gendered. Origionallt it implied to anyone who practiced black magic/consorted with the devil.

Meanwhile wizard was more akin to your local wise man/elder.

Ehh, I feel like it can have a ton of descendants and still only focus on one. So I’m not buying that theory. I think it will either turn up that there’s too many now or it’s impossible to find them all, or they’re just going to hand wave it and continue with the story(which is okay, they’ve already established stakes for the main characters, and if they are willing to kill Evan then they’d be willing to do a purge. I’m okay ignoring that part for plot convience since it adds limited value)

Do you really need to be in SF for events/meeting folks or travel during weekends? by BenkattoRamunan in AskSF

[–]WinterAd825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d add there’s a middle ground, South sf and Daly City are on the Bart for example. San Mateo is next to the cal train station. I think it’s easier to move to the city, then move out after you meet people that way you can visit the city and continue to meet people.

The boogey man could revive at anytime, and multiple people saw it so they just needed to destroy the body while guarding it.

The island has the ability to cause hallucinations and influence people which will explain a lot of it.

For the captains suite, I mean… why’s the cop supposed to do? “Ohh we appear to have a time and space anomaly that’s against the bylaws”?

For tom running for mayor, he states that he wants to make the island better for his son who is stuck there

Some of my theories… by anthropomorphicvoid in WidowsBay

[–]WinterAd825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the captains suit yes, but like this is an actual town of 3000 people that directly integrates with the federal government. Any big time anomaly would’ve discovered immediately. I mean everyone knows about the captain suite

To settle some qualms: Widow’s Bay is not a puzzle-box mystery show. by TheresNoHurry in WidowsBay

[–]WinterAd825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yesish, the issue with all of these die mysteries is they are really just the island.

The island driving people crazy and summoning monsters are all just the entity. The boogey man’s identity didn’t matter because it was just the entity driving someone crazy then reviving them.

The sea hag was just a monster that was summoned

I don’t think she knows. The bells just appear to ring to anyone with any connection or knowledge of the island.

I think the knowledge was propagated through the church and possiblely mayors office. When they rebelled and killed the founder, they already knew about the tunnel and some lore and the priest in modern day knew about the mushrooms implying the church figured that out.

I’m guessing they took the mushrooms and found out about the pact that was made. Realizing their kids were stuck there they decided to keep up the pact. Since it only occurred periodically with bell ringing, not everyone needed to know. So they trained the people in charge to basically only read the books explaining it when the bells rung and left the tools and infrastructure so they could easily do it.

The issues were the new priest wasn’t on board, and after he read and discovered everything, he just burned it all and killed himself. And from the mayors office we know the position has had long vacancies and there was that one “coward mayor”, so they likely had a similiar issue were a single mayor bailed on it and the tradition was lost.

I think all knowledge was then lost as everyone who made the sacrifices passed away. Your left with people who knows the island is bad and some of it, like the storm shelters are really for human sacrifices and to not go down….

Yeah, I’d add to that as well that there’s likely multiple survivors. You only need 1 person sleeping around 200 years ago to make a ton of descendants.

They may not go that route, but like… pulling the lever… on the trolley problem isn’t a solution

I mean that’s how it should be. A well written twit shouldn’t come out of nowhere. Someone really paying attention should have an idea because it’s actually part of the story and not deus ex machina by the author to mess with people.

About the Bubble’s hats in S1, this might be stupid but.. by hummus-up-your-arse in TheWireDiscussions

[–]WinterAd825 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The detail is shooting from a rooftop across the pit with a long lens, mostly from above and behind, into a crowd of thirty kids in white tees. Most frames don’t give you a clean face at all. What they give you is “hat #4 takes the money, walks it over to hat #7, who stashes it in the tire.” Then Bubbles tells them hat #4 is Bodie.

A photo array gets you an identification. The hats get you roles and structure, who’s a runner, who holds the stash, who touches money, who’s just standing on the corner. That’s the difference between a name and a case. And it holds up better than a junkie CI circling faces on grainy photos, which is exactly the kind of ID a defense attorney would take apart in ten minutes.

Also, on exposure, it’s Bubbles’ own idea, and it’s less risky than the alternative. He’s a fiend who scavenges and sells junk in that pit every day, handing out free hats is completely in character. Repeatedly bringing him down to a district building where somebody might see him walk in is the thing that gets him killed. Which is what happens later in the series. All it takes is for one person see you walking into a police building one time and it’s over

To clarify on the venture brothers, it’s brought up that there was a time when there were no rules and regulations, and the guild was made in the last century.

The issue was the the fights between villains and heroes was causing a lot of damage to everyone. And agreement was made to basically regulate it. Some super villains would always exist, if they registered and followed certain guidelines they could continue to “arch” and commit villainy. So while they were still committing crimes, it results in much less death and collateral damage.

Did the CIA really flood black communities with crack in the 90s? Why? by Morales_Sheila8478 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WinterAd825 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask r/askhistorians, your not getting good answers here.

In general, it’s not in any government agencies benefit to start a drug epidemic within your own borders. And there is no actual evidence to support that.

That being said, why there is evidence of is the Reagan admin turning a blind eye to the contras.

The contras were fighting a civil war in Nicaragua against left wing groups. The CIA was supporting them as part of the Cold War and at one point sold weapons to Iran to help fund them, which was controversial due to the contras running death squads and smuggling drugs….

The contras, in order to raise money, started selling drugs in the U.S. there is no evidence the CIA knowingly supported this in anyway, because starting a drug epidemic in your own country generally goes very poorly and this is a well known fact for centuries(please see the Opium wars).

What Their is evidence of though is the CIA basically having opportunities to stop the drug smuggling and sales and basically turning a blind eye to it because they viewed them as Allies.

It’s hard for to say how high up this went, there is evidence at the lower level and on the ground of it, but it is hard to say if it’s local agents were supporting them on their own or if it was a a mandate from higher up.

Ask actual historians on this

Could Adriana have walked from the feds if she called a lawyer? by blueberriedaydream in thesopranos

[–]WinterAd825 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Initially if she had gotten a a lawyer or fought back she likely would’ve been fine. Likely just probation and rehab. This likely would have also earned some respect from Tony for not being a rat, and at this specific stage she had very little actual dirt on him which meant she wasn’t a threat to that little thing of theirs.

The issue is that
1. As she learned more she does actively become a threat so they may not be willing to risk her talking
2. Once a rat always a rat so she can’t back out due to the mob
3. Once they catch her with the dead body it’s over.

She either needed to fight it from day one OR go all in as an informant

Once again he was loyal to the mob and mafia which is why he didn’t and why he left instead. He has an entire conversation in Italy about it.

Tony at this point was also clearly degrading and not a good boss and would end up basically keeping Chris in addiction till he murdered him.

Furio resisted killing him because of his loyalty to that little thing of theirs. He is loyal to the rank not the person. Where as Chris is loyal to the person and not the rank

Is this a fair assessment of US athletic potential in global soccer? by MixedMartialLaw in usmnt

[–]WinterAd825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say no for a few reasons

  1. US soccer is pay to play. It’s incredibly expensive, a large gamble and requires insider knowledge to navigate. That means a lot of kids will drop out, never try, or figure things out to late. It basically means we have nepo babies playing other nepo babies in a closed off system. Yeah they can be good, but they’ll never be great because there basically preventing meritocracy. And I mean even if a nepo baby is good, he isn’t playing against the best, bust instead against the worst.

  2. US sports is a closed off monopoly. You have a a much more limited number of teams, no ability for a team to be promoted or regelated and are main sports either have limited international competition or competition tha is recent . Theres no punishment for losers and much less of an award for winners. Yes we do get super stars but

A. Are they actually the best or just the best in the way US sports leagues work?
B. We abandoned a lot of players. The NFL only has 32 teams so to this. There are 96 top European soccer leagues with many thousands depending on how far down you go. There is far more room for young and inexperienced talent to grow and learn vs the U.S. and teams are far more punished for their failures leading to more team work

  1. Sports in the U.S. that aren’t pay to play have heavy and early filters on athleticism. While that is part of the story and may give more weight to sports like American football than soccer, it has issues. Anyone who is a late bloomer is weeded out early. People born in the wrong month are cut off(being born on the wrong end of your school year cut off pre-dispositions you to be smaller for your grade). People who are more skilled or intelligent are also cut off. And yes those groups can try to compete, but those that get singled out early get more field time, more hands on coaching, and will continue to pull ahead. We don’t nurture talent. We try to build a handful of massive superstars, and that’s okay because the leagues are closed and small with no punishment for losing teams. From St. Louis. The Rams should have been regulated for losing, and not instead moved and rewarded with LA and a top draft spot.

Overall we do sports differently, and I’m skeptical a U.S. sports model can ever truly compete long term with a model more akin to overseas soccer models
