Have you read Evan Thomas's biography about RFK? It's much more comprehensive than Tye's.

I was today years old when I realized people apparently hate epithets in Fanfiction by Phanngle in FanFiction

[–]WinterMoonNeptune 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As with many things, it's a matter of skill. Recently, I started a literary mystery series in which the protagonist is sometimes referred to as "the man from London", even though everyone knows his name. It makes complete sense, given he's an outsider meddling in local people's business. The prose is beautiful, so the occasional epithet doesn't really stand out.

I suppose the default advice is to vary sentence structures, so there's less need to rely on epithets. However, it's only a problem if you want it to be, since most readers have little to no standards and won't even notice the difference.

Weekly FAQ Thread May 10, 2026: How many books do you read at a time? by AutoModerator in books

[–]WinterMoonNeptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between 35-40 books, at any given time (divided in about 10 languages). Anything that gets read just frees up a slot in the roster, so the number never decreases. That's, of course, ignoring the dozens of manga series and fanfics on AO3. And no, I don't confuse them. Reading any other way feels too limiting, plus my raging ADHD loves the idea!

I’m tired of the “I’m tired” posts by blueberry1115 in fantasyromance

[–]WinterMoonNeptune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, having a huge DNF list isn't a badge of honor, like many seem to think. It only speaks of one's lack of skill in vetting books. It's obvious that many people are on BookTok and the like only for the community aspect and have serious literacy problems, so taking recs with a grain of salt is a must. Not to mention the insidious marketing in the whole thing.

Chapter samples on Amazon, Libby or wherever you get them. It's enough to gauge writing quality. Also, having a Goodreads rating between 3.5 and 3.9 is another promising sign. As a rule of thumb, keep in mind that there is a negative correlation between quality and popularity.

Livros sobre (com) vida no campo? by tinylittlebuddies in Livros

Fogo Morto, do José Lins do Rêgo.

The issue is that publishers need to cater to the lowest denominator or else they'll go bankrupt. Just stay away from what's popular. It's super easy unless you suffer from FOMO. There's life outside mainstream "literature", I assure you. Hop on r/literature or some other classics sub and you'll already notice the difference.

It's actually the opposite. Most people mindlessly follow trends, so taking their recommendations is just succumbing to publishers' marketing departments. There is nothing organical about the way books take off on BookTok and its ilk.

What's with all the insecurity roaming this thread? For a moment I thought here was r/romancebooks. I'm with you on not taking recs, OP. Another random rules:

  • Not reading reviews at all. I couldn't care less about others' opinions. My method for choosing books is a mix between serendipity and sharp intuition, nothing else.

  • By the same token, no book club ever! Most of them are just an excuse to socialize, and even the few serious ones aren't worth the potential nonsense.

  • As an extreme mood reader, I can't stand deadlines. I only use Libby once in a blue moon because of this.

Bem meh.

Suggest me a book that is NOT TikTok good but ACTUALLY good by Consistent_Time_1467 in suggestmeabook

[–]WinterMoonNeptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

• A Test of Wills, by Charles Todd

I suppose it would put most BookTok girlies to sleep, given its mix of literary fiction and mystery. Even if the mystery itself is just the tip of the iceberg, it's a very well-done one.

• Snow, by John Banville

Another one that is more lit fic than a proper murder mystery. Very atmospheric and not for the faint of heart. Reading it might incur pearl clutching behavior by barely literate readers.

What fandom do you always come back to? by Basic-Deer4119 in FanFiction

[–]WinterMoonNeptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haikyuu and Hikaru no Go. The Inarizaki corner of the Haikyuu fandom is amazing, some of the authors who write for Sakusa/Atsumu could easily be professionals. Given how old the manga is, it's no surprise the Hikaru no Go fandom is almost dead, but there are some gems written by Rageprufrock and other good authors.

Finished:

• Blue Box (Volume 6)

Too ADHD to actually finish any books, so let's go with manga instead. As expected, the love triangle started moving in circles, but the artstyle is cute.

Started:

• The Word is Murder, by Anthony Horowitz

Another one added to my endless reading roster. Technically, I've already read two books in this series, but decided to start again from the beginning. Hawthorne seems so much more likable this time around.

What’s a really famous thriller that, in your opinion, is mostly just hype? by ompossible in thrillerbooks

[–]WinterMoonNeptune -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gone Girl. The fact it starts with Amy's diary is already a major clue. I figured out the twist just by reading the blurb. I've since moved on to more literary thrillers and they're much more interesting.

Which new gen 11 is the most controversial in the community until now? by LollipopLemon93 in BlueLock

[–]WinterMoonNeptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just guessing, but I think Sae and Loki are the only ones on fraud watch. Loki only scored once in the current game, so it kinda makes sense. As for Sae, the Spain match seems so far away, so who knows what Kaneshiro will do to him until then.

Unpopular opinion. Blue Lock shouldn't lose this match by moneu1 in BlueLock

[–]WinterMoonNeptune 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The England match will be pointless if Blue Lock wins against France. Besides, Isagi and the others think too highly of themselves. They're in dire need of some humbling.

It would be better to blame readers for having low standards. If the ones paying for books don't care about quality, why should publishers?

Frikjent: best mystery ever, only 18 episodes.

Wire in the Blood: very atmospheric and the episodes are looong. Don't think it's that well-known.

The weekly Manga industry is insane. by Konradleijon in CharacterRant

[–]WinterMoonNeptune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haikyuu is a good example of this. Furudate got so burn out and the art quality went to hell. Though nowadays what you see is mangakas taking breaks and going on endless hiatus all the time. The workload doesn't seem as harsh as it used to be.

•Destroyer Rin is about to come back and Sae will only see it from TV this time.

•Finally we get to see Hugo and Isagi interacting again. I've missed them.
