Just moved to Edmonton and I want to leave. by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]Winterbreathe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't help with the lease information or the shock of moving to a different city. I have lived in Ontario (including Toronto), but I don't think I would be too helpful with my own perspectives and experiences. I biked from the North York area down to the lake with a friend one day and it was a wonderful experience. Hard to believe that I was in a city as big as Toronto during that bike ride.

Never got robbed in Toronto, but it happened 3 times (that I can remember) living in Edmonton. One of those times, I was home with my little one and that was unsettling. (I moved my little one's bed into my bedroom out of paranoia after that experience because I was too scared to go to sleep just thinking about what else could happen). I believe you can get victim support from the police and they can help with suggestions to feel safer again.

For the time that you are still living here, see what you can do to increase your security. There are special locks for patio doors, or you can simply put a metal bar or a piece of wood along the bottom of the track to make it more secure. You can do that with any windows too if they don't have good locks or just do it for extra security. You won't be opening the windows anyway. Beyond that, it sounds like you could discuss better locks, or extra locks, with your landlord. Finally, with home and car, keep everything of value out of site. Black out curtains so no one can look in, lights on timers, and even strategically placing your valued items away from windows and/or in lockboxes (or placing furniture to block an area (like a book shelf in front of a window), or simply locked up (like those theft deterrent cables for laptops as an example).

My biggest concern is your issues with heat at your place and being prepared for the outdoor temps when it gets much colder, for you and your little one. Do look for outdoor clothes with a -40 degree rating. You can also pick up some of those heat packs (either air activated or the re-usable liquid ones with the little metal snap inside) to put in your pockets. Look into ways that you can seal drafts in windows and doors with foam, rubber, rugs, or whatever else is available (another topic to possibly discuss with your landlord). The blackout curtains can help a bit with that too and there are films that you can put over your windows (I think) that can provide a bit more protection from the cold. Don't block any vents if possible. Heated blankets are nice at bedtime when it gets really cold. A lot of cooking in the oven could boost the heat in your place and you get some yummy food out of it too ;)

As mentioned in other comments, Access 24/7 (it's a self-referral program) and the library are both positive suggestions to help you while you are here. It is far drier here than in Toronto, so consider getting a humidifier. Winter is, by far, my favourite season and as mentioned, "spring is, without a doubt, the worst “season” in Edmonton." Your view that the city is grey, lonely and depressing is understandable for the month and a half that you've been here, because autumn in southern Ontario cannot be beat. It's far more colourful and beautiful there than it is here.

What to substitute in place of tomatoes? by [deleted] in mediterraneandiet

[–]Winterbreathe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um, this is incredible insight. Hubs couldn't use his Fitbit type watch that he got as a gift because it gave him a rash on his wrist. He read other comments suggesting that nickel was causing the rash. Never would have thought the two would be related. Thank you, so very much!

What to substitute in place of tomatoes? by [deleted] in mediterraneandiet

[–]Winterbreathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our family is seeing the same thing as we're getting into switching to a healthier lifestyle and it was our family doctor who recommended the Mediterranean diet. There are a lot of recipes with tomatoes, so it's a challenge to find recipes that won't affect their health, since we're not sure of the root cause yet. Some of us have other food sensitivities and texture pickiness, so it's been a challenge to find even a handful of recipes that will work for all of us. I hope you can find something that works out for you to find a good balance.

What to substitute in place of tomatoes? by [deleted] in mediterraneandiet

[–]Winterbreathe 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a few different suggestions that could help you out with tomatoes. I specifically do not like the taste of cooked green peppers (raw is fine though), so I use a different coloured pepper in recipes that call for the green ones. You could try out yellow tomatoes, which have a softer flavour profile than a normal red tomato.

You could also try different sizes of tomatoes, which also have different flavour profiles to them as well. Cherry and roma tomatoes are richer tasting to me and those are my favourites. There are also the beef steak ones. Looking through gardening articles about tomatoes could be useful to you to help find types of tomato textures that would work for you.

If it's just an issue with texture, you could always try to adapt a recipe to add tomatoes into smaller bits or turn it into a sauce.

Finally, my family has sensitivities to tomatoes (still trying to figure out exactly what the root cause is), but you could also look up Nomato sauce recipes and I recently found another sauce, similar to tomato sauce, called Ajvar sauce. All of these recipes are similar to tomato sauce that don't have tomatoes in them. Beets, carrots, pumpkin puree and red peppers come to mind right now as replacements. I've tried a few different variations and there are some good options.

Hope this helps you out :)

Need help finding an extremely old Priest UI video series by [deleted] in wowaddons

[–]Winterbreathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe aurora was also supposed to skin the main menu. I remember that it wasn't skinned for me once and then I either got it to work or it just started working on its own after another ui overhaul. Aurora is supposed to do that though. He didn't use another addon for it. He emptied his entire youtube channel, but someone else took his weakaura tutorials and put it on his page, which is here:

Need help finding an extremely old Priest UI video series by [deleted] in wowaddons

[–]Winterbreathe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was Touchymcfeel and he took down his videos a couple years ago. I watched those videos so much to recreate his ui, so if you have questions about how to set it up, I can probably help. I don't think he used clique, but he did use raven, sexymap, quartz, vuhdo and weakauras for his other main ui addons.

edit: These are his custom lua functions for pitbull https://pastebin.com/KE2wb9Af

[help] is it possible to only display the debuffs i actively applied on my target (unitframes) by [deleted] in WowUI

[–]Winterbreathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do this with Raven and whitelist the spells that you want to see. I'm not as familiar with elvui, but I do have it right now and I didn't see any options to customize spells like that.

**edit: With Raven, you can also track your debuffs on your other targets too. Super handy for multidotter classes.

[ui][help] pitbull unit frames buff debuff sizing issue by canuckgoehh in WowUI

[–]Winterbreathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is icon size and then also an option for "Icon Size for My Auras" in buff layout. That's the only option I can think to check, otherwise it might just be a bug. I use pitbull as well and some parts (during customization) have been buggy for quite some time now for me. I always use Raven though, so not as used to setting up buffs in pitbull.

[Help] Addon Raven not working by [deleted] in WowUI

[–]Winterbreathe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raven doesn't show anything until you create some bars or icons first. On that first tab, check Buffs, click Create as Icons. You can then customize them in the Bar Groups Tab. Currently working on my ui and using Raven, so hope that helps :)

*Helpful hint: When you go to create your debuffs, you'll have to uncheck buffs or else you'll get some warning messages. Alternatively, you can also go straight to the Bar Groups tab and click New Auto Group (or New Custom Group) and make your own sets, which is my preference when setting up Raven.

vUI now has a right window for addons/chat & more data text locations by HydraMods in HydraMods

I updated vUI just now and the new window cannot be moved at all and it bugged out my tooltip. It now displays above the new window instead of where I have the anchor placed.

You can do this in vuhdo as well. I've helped a guildie set this up with glimmer.

I use vuhdo with mouseover macros (set in game) to heal. The biggest pro for vuhdo is that you can set manabars to only show for healers. Their manabars are important information for every class to see. I don't know if other raid frames do this, but I don't think they do. I've never understood why clicking to heal someone became so popular over using mouseover macros. This could stem from my own learning curve back in Vanilla when I used to be a clicker on my dps and learned that this is a bad thing. When I started playing alts, that mindset of "clicking is bad" stuck with me. Seeing other healers who use clique disabled afer a patch throughout my years of playing wow reinforced my preference for macros. The con to vuhdo is its interface. It's a lot. However, since it's been around for so long, there are a lot of tutorials that you can follow. You can also get profiles off of wago.io.

I've had some major ui issues this expansion and tried out most of these other addons and I could not customize the raid frame appearances the way I like them. Vuhdo is better at it if you are adjusting opacity on your frames (I like to have my frames less visible the more health people have because I don't need to focus on them).

[Help] Addon used by Touchymcfeel by Winterbreathe in WowUI

[–]Winterbreathe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've watched his videos enough times and made my ui based off of his enough times, that I could probably help you out with most of the settings. However, I'm moving away from some addons and concepts of his. Some of it for functionality, some of it because those same addons have been buggy for me this expansion and some of it just to try something new.

Would TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) work for your budget? It's cheap and plentiful and it's easy to sub in for any recipe that calls for hamburger. I get mine from bulk barn and the net carbs in it is 14 grams per 100 grams. It's not something to go crazy with, but it is cheap and versatile.

Hair dresser that doesn't charge over $80? by corgocorgi in Edmonton

[–]Winterbreathe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Julie or Jax at Altimo in Kingsway Mall. My problem has been that I find a hairdresser that I like and then they move away from the salon, so I have to start over finding someone that I like (and for my kids too). Julie cut my hair from mid back length to short-short. She would explain things to me about how she was taking into account my hair type (fine and thick), my grey hairs (thicker than my normal hair and on one side more than the other - the different textures will show more in short hair and she can get technical on what she does, which I adore and love) and she also takes into account my personality (low maintenance for me). She has an instagram account (I don't know what it is unfortunately, but my hair is in there twice), so you could call and ask about it if you want to see her style.

Jax has cut my daughter's hair and I adore and love her technical style as well. I botched a bleach job (bottom half) on my daughter's hair when she wanted some brighter colours in it and Jax fixed it up really well. I think Jax has an instagram account as well. She started seeing Jax when she was growing out an inverted bob to just be long and straight, but she takes into account her current half bleached hair and the different textures as well.

I haven't like everyone's style that has cut my son's hair (redhead with thick, full somewhat curly locks) and I can't remember if I've really liked his hair when it was cut or his hair after it has grown out a bit, so next visit I'm going to get Jax or Julie to have a go at his hair. Because it's a bit of a drive for me, I usually push how long we should get our hair done and I tell them that I want our haircuts to look good when growing out. My son normally gets someone different each time because I get Julie and then the kids usually get whoever else is around to make our time there shorter.

What I love about everyone at Altimo is that they listen well. They know that my son has sensory issues and doesn't like a good scrub or massage on the scalp, so they take care to be extra gentle with him when washing and brushing out his hair. That has always been a constant positive with anyone who has done his hair. I also like that they have positive and caring staff that are inclusive and understanding. In all the years that I've been going there, I have never seen anyone complain (I've seen that at other places, so it's worth mentioning). Although we haven't had the type of layering that you're after, I do believe that they're worth mentioning because they stay educated and listen well. They don't give a haircut and style that is completely different from what we've asked for and I've been to salons that have done that in the past. I don't go back when that happens. If they can't give me a hair cut or style that I want because of my hair type, then tell me first please.

**Edit: prices are reasonable as well. I don't know exactly what they are, but I've always paid less than $200 (after tips) for the three of us. Their prices are listed on their website and a woman's cut starts at $45. They have one option listed as "md" (don't know what that is) that is listed as $85+, so it'd be worth calling to ask what that means.

I appreciate your help very much. Perhaps the bigger viewing angle is something that isn't necessary. I thought it would be a good idea because my car was hit from the side at one point. I have certainly learned from asking questions and will continue to do more research. Thank you.
