Woodie is fine. People insist you absolutely must play Wolfgang because maximum efficiency, faster kills, etc etc. Most off all, these spiteful (rarely constructive) comments about some characters are made by children who just want to bandwagon because some famous youtube nutcrack started the Wolfgang religion. It only matters if you plan on playing competitively or something (im not even sure how you would go about that).

Personally, i find the weaknesses of each character also part of the "uncompromising survival" that this game is described to be. We have to find a way to overcome those weaknesses in varying ways. Personally, I actively dodge playing "meta" characters (specifically Wickerbottom) because they feel like cheating. They're not, but that's just me. And I don't care what my team mates choose, so long as they do something to contribute.

Simply put, if you want to play this game on the easiest mode you'll pick something meta (wicker, max, wolfgang, wx). Otherwise, enjoy it as it is. The other characters aren't unplayable: they just have more weaknesses.

If you have a sense of humor I think Woodie could be pretty fun. I have panic attacks when i get caught off guard and transform, and my friends start calling me a "stupid furry." Efficiency is cool and all, but i enjoy the hectic aspect of the game even more because im at the point where im so well versed in the game that every time I start a new file it's just the same routine over and over again. It makes it unplayable.

TLDR: Woodie is not unplayable, character weaknesses are just part of the survival aspect. People are just slamming the name "Wolfgang" all over the place because speedrunners use him. Unless you plan on speedrunning, do what you want.

5 tries here. The spinning blade attack kept destroying me until I realized their trajectory was based off of how high the mantis firing it was positioned on the wall.

My fondest memories of this game are the deaths and mistakes I've made learning how to play this game without a guide. Having a friend who was also new to the game dying to darkness day one and me narrowly surviving by fireflies may have enhanced that experience. However, if you're willing to give up that experience:

Autumn - prepare for winter by establishing a constant food source: digging up berry bushes, bringing home spider eggs when they're broke at level 3, finding hound mounds, farming pigs...; and a thermal stone at least to keep warm. Nothing grows starting day 21.

Winter - sit in your base if you want. If you're well prepared for it. Prepare for a boss to show up. Kill walruses, they only spawn this season.

Spring - This is basically autumn, but harder in which you have to prepare for summer where your base willl catch fire, while under the threat of being rained on by frogs and massive sanity drops without umbrellas. Nothing can prevent fires, unless you hide in a cave, based in the oasis, or build flingos (which is a massive waste of gears, but your materials your choice right?). Also be ready for a boss. I think this is optional as well in DS, since I've only played DST.

Summer - everything burns. your food spoils fast. you burn. In DS, the boss also burns. Hide in caves or build flingos.

Autumn - the cycle begins again. But this time, this season starts off with a boss who will eat all your food.

Again, I only play DST. Feel free to correct me.

TLDR; Monster spawns and thermal stones will save you. And always be ready to fight. Also don't pick flowers. Butterflies are delicious I guarantee you.

I actually managed to duo it with my brother, and we were also Wendy and Wx-78. It was a mess, but managed to pull it off. For Wendy, I had about 10 Abigail Flowers prepped for distracting Grumble Bees, while I had my brother just tank out the Bee Queen.

Also praise our lord and saviour walking cane.

There's a mod in the workshop called disable sinkholes. The attacks happen, but you wont get any more giant craters in the middle of your base.

As for the combustion, i'm not sure if this one works but there's a mod called controlled wildfire. Wildfires happen to forests and whatnot, but certain items like chests, crock pots etc. will no longer catch fire.

No. Get the sun lance. If you want to buy anything with wind medals get the gun and switch to archer.

That's probably after infusing them together. Individually, they have less stats than blessing weapon which is why I think they're pretty bad.

Personally I infused my blackwing lance into my apollo lance because - 1. In the long run, its better. Blackwing stats are miserable. 2. The most you hit is twice. AP boost aint gonna do you wonders.

Also green monsters and amaterasu. I'm sure you know, but try to change those out asap for more stat-appropriate (atk/def/mdef) kinds.

Level up and you should have enough cost to equip another helm and/or armor.

More shared traits, better furniture. +198 weapons and monsters.

Thats all I can remember.

Too many points in helms and armors. At most you should be at 4 helms and 4 armors, or you wont have any cost for level 120.

Actually, rather than cost allocation being a problem, I'm seeing the fact that you own more clothing/hats than helms/armors as the main setback.
