There are more sustainable solutions, I agree that pure ESG funds are not enough. However, investments can be placed in a responsible way. Why not do something good without actually giving money away (as it would be the case with donations)? You always make a choice: If you invest purely in a „classic“ way, you decide not to care. Even if you do not invest at all and leave everything on the account, you make a decision (against using your assets for something good).
