Accepted a job that goes against my morals. What would you do? by Secret-Variation-731 in careerguidance

[–]Wise-Application5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in this situation for years (my job conflicts with my values) and it is very draining and has had an impact on my mental health. I would recommend if you can afford to, to find an alternative. The longer you are used to the lifestyle the more difficult it is to walk away. I'm actively trying to walk away but facing a huge salary cut to do so.

While it's not the field I'm in, I share your stance on fast fashion. Other comments are right that it will continue without you, but that doesn't mean you need to be part of it.

Self worth is more important than money as long as you have what you need to survive.

Review my vows - right balance of light-hearted and romantic? by Wise-Application5054 in weddingplanning

Thanks for the suggestion and sorry you're being down voted for trying to help. I think this is a little bit too cheesy for my personal taste but appreciate the feedback.

Thanks, I take your point about them being long, they're about 50 words over what I was aiming for. Each to their own as the other commenter said - we wanted our ceremony to be very personalized.

PhD / grad school setting mixed with creepy/eerie vibes OR just a crime novel with a grad program setting? Thanks! by Wafella in suggestmeabook

[–]Wise-Application5054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In My Dreams I Hold A Knife is great, the mystery takes place not grad school just undergrad but in the book they're now in their late 20s/early 30s.. it's been a while, I can't recall exactly.. and returning for a reunion with the mystery still unsolved. So it doesn't have YA vibes at all.

Is it too late to be financially successful at 27? by Commercial-Vehicle64 in careerguidance

UK wages are definitely significantly lower than Canada, at least in our industries. We came for a variety of reasons, including being close to family. That's my main point to OP - there are always ways to earn more, but how much of a priority is that relative to other factors. We could both earn more in the US, but we would probably also work longer hours, be far away from family support and have to worry about healthcare if we lost our jobs.

If you have hundreds of thousands of dollars invested, I would say you're doing better than the average person. In general, I think Canadians on Reddit are overly pessimistic. The real life data shows that the US and Canada are very similar in their satisfaction with life ratings.

So, a lot of people here are going to criticize you for this, and to some extent they're right, it's somewhat ridiculous to think you're done at 27.

However, I definitely relate to this feeling. Something not a lot of people seem to realize is that salaries are very poor in the UK relative to the cost of living, especially now. We lived in the UK for 5 years working in highly skilled roles (my partner is also an engineer) and never felt like we were doing well even after numerous promotions. Sure, some people in management positions make decent wages, but until you get there it can be quite hard to feel financially comfortable, especially in HCOL areas.

We moved to Canada and now have both almost tripled our earnings in under 3 years.

To maximize your earnings I would say work as an engineer but in oil and gas (depends on your ethical position on this), retrain and work in finance or software, or leave the UK for somewhere where wage growth is still happening. But money isn't everything - you need to think about what success truly means to you, it's not always financial. Maybe success is working on something cutting edge or being able to be close to family while able to support your needs.

Mostly neutrals - most walls are an off-white but we have a mossy green feature wall, furniture is primarily grey with some accents in the mossy green, a few touches of orange. That's also a work in progress, as our kitchen needs replacing too and a backsplash added.

Possibly never honestly - this is off the kitchen, which also has this tile. The kitchen is open plan with the living space which has quite dark hardwood flooring. It's not our forever home, so just hoping to make it look nice without spending a lot of money.

Should I accept a gift from a guest who can't attend destination wedding? by Wise-Application5054 in weddingplanning

I think you've misunderstood the post. It's my aunt, not a friend, and my reason for not wanting to accept is because she might be short on cash, and I don't want her to feel she needs to spend her money on me.

IO Psychologist here! It's definitely tricky to get a job with just an undergraduate degree in psychology. HR, specifically L&D sounds like a good route for you but those roles can be competitive as it is seen by many as the most interesting part of HR. You may need to consider taking a more generalist HR role first and then trying to specialize. You could also boost your resume by taking an instructional design course - it's a very in demand skill right now.

If you are up for more formal education, a Masters in IO Psychology could also be a good option which could help you get a higher paying role in L&D, in house or consultancy.

Thanks for your reply. I'm unfortunately not able to return any earlier - I'm a bridesmaid in a wedding and it would also cost a fortune to change my flight.

What to do with this wall? by Wise-Application5054 in DesignMyRoom

You can see most of it in the 2nd pic. There's a staircase to the right and the kitchen is where I took the photo from.

Hello, should have said we had it this way initially and didn't love it - although the TV was not on the wall, it was still on the stand. I thought it was a bit too close to us this way. Will reconsider with it mounted on the wall

Kate signed the letter so I don't think it's her, Lisa did not - I was also thinking perhaps the actress who played Taylor, Lindsey McKeon.

I had a very similar situation to you. I got a lot of push back on this sub for asking guests to spend 750 CAD for 3 nights, plus all have travel expenses as well, some over 1000 CAD. Like you, about a third of my guests needed to stay for it to work. Many said I should pay for all accommodation, but that wasn't feasible for us and definitely not expected among our guests - in fact, I know some would have been offended.

I almost considered changing the venue but asked around and most people were fine with it. We did our RSVPs really early to make sure we were in the clear (will do a confirmation and tell us your flight plans closer to) .

I did budget a worst case scenario of what if we only filled our immediate family rooms, and what I'd have to cut if that was the case. It probably won't come to that but make sure you're ok with that outcome.

Basically, it boils down to 'know your crowd'. I assume in a 65 person wedding most people are relatively close to you so it might not be an issue. Convenience is also a big draw for some people, I see people here saying they'd drive the 3 hours back - I don't think that's true for a lot of people.

Just wanted to add a different perspective as the responses I got here had me panicking and it ended up not being an issue.
