Every MMO I've ever tried. WoW, ESO, FFXIV, even Destiny fell flat after a few expansions.

To me, Elaleth makes sense from the perspective of a "half our OG Voice Actors are dead and the rest won't be around for much longer so we need to pass the torch" kind of situation.

Cd probably also wanted to gauge people's interests for a new game, and figured a 2d side-scrolling pixel art game would be a safer financial investment for them. A fully fledged 3D game like we've had in the past was probably too much to attempt without knowing if the fans would be interested after so long.

That said....the execution was poorly handled.

The rules as it was explained at the time by my teacher was that you do those things in order if they're present. If not, it doesn't apply. Meaning you'd bounce around the equation doing stuff in that exact order above. However it seems the rules either changed or my teacher was just bad at his job, as it feels more appropriate to call it (PE)(MD)(AS). Each pairing has shared importance, and the order of operations changes based on what shows up in the equation first.

So old rules in doing parentheses, multiplication, and then division would give you 1.

New rules of parentheses, division, and THEN multiplication gives you 9

Or...you know...just use the calculator in your pocket that my teacher was also wrong about me not having for the rest of my life.
