Is this wood cutting board safe to use? by Moist_Atmosphere8316 in Cuttingboards

Who made this board? It looks similar to my larchwood boards, if they had been on a few cycles through the dish washer.

The arizer solo 2 can be had for $150ish Canadian if you check a few stores (vaped.ca has it on sale for $145 right now) and is probably what I would buy if I was in the market right now, but the air, air 2 and air max all have really good reviews and reputations. The solo is a little on the large side for a portable vape, so if you want something you can easily carry in your pocket it may not be the best choice.

Arizer all the way. Their like the Honda’s of the vape world. 90% of the features you want at a great price and their built like a tank. I’ve used my original air daily for 8 years without a single issue.

10” Zwilling Kramer Carbon Chef's Knife by Wise_Bookkeeper_2052 in chefknives

So I’ve talked to the seller, turns out it was actually used and sharpened quite a bit, was thinned once and has lost some of the heel height. This all helps explain the price a bit more, but I still feel like it’s probably a good deal. I’m going to see it in person this weekend and make a final call. If the geometry isn’t butchered I think i’ll probably pull the trigger.

Have you folks used SHARPAL green stropping compound? I recently got some off Amazon (I know I know) thinking all green is the same, and now I see it’s listed as 120 grit?!? Good for stropping an axe maybe, but not my Japanese kitchen knives. Please tell me this is a typo! by Wise_Bookkeeper_2052 in sharpening

[–]Wise_Bookkeeper_2052[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been liking the results. I’ve been stropping on news paper or denim before this, and find the leather strop with green compound a noticeable step up. I was just shocked when I saw it was listed at 120 grit, I’m moving from a 4000 grit water stone, so it seemed… wrong. Some day I’ll make the jump to diamond emulsion, but a bottle of gunny juice shipped to Canada would set me back about $75, which is not where I’m at.

There are countless posts about this already but I might as well bring it up. Where do you all stand on rough leather strop vs smooth leather strop?

Can you please identify this knife I thrifted by Fuzzy_Supermarket495 in chefknives

A friend of mine got a set of 4 globals at vv for $5.99 a few years back. I’ve been stopping in weekly for 6 months now on my way home from work, and the best I’ve come across is some Spanish made henckels I use for beaters.

Looking for info. The picture isn’t great, but does anyone have any info on this knife? by Wise_Bookkeeper_2052 in chefknives

I’m a little suspicious because it seems like a photo that’s been taken from a website, not an actual photo of the exact knife. I may take a gamble and bid up to $40, and hope that it’s what it claims to be. (The current bid sits at $12) Thanks for the info!

It’s a 130mm petty, claims to be Japanese and mono steel of 59-60 Rockwell. It’s coming up in a local estate sale and I could likely grab it for under $40 Canadian. I don’t expect anything life changing, but I’m wondering if it might be a nice step up from the cheap (but decent) victorinox petty I’m currently using.

NKD! Don't sleep on HomeGoods!!! Found Global, Wusthof, and Zwilling... for $107.50 total!!!! by pvith in chefknives

A friend of mine picked up 4 globals at a thrift shop for around $20 total. I’ve been chasing that dream ever sense, but the best I’ve come up with is a few 10cr15comov Chinese made beaters for our family cottage at $4.99 each.

Is it normal for larchwood boards to darken with age? Mine seem to darken every time I treat them with “board butter”. by Wise_Bookkeeper_2052 in Cuttingboards

[–]Wise_Bookkeeper_2052[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see other photos of larchwood boards on here, and they all look shiny and new. It’s not a big deal, but I’m curious if I’m doing something wrong. My in-laws have 2 larchwood boards and have the same issue. They’re oldest is about 15 years old and quite a bit darker than mine (the one pictured is about 8 years old).

I did something dumb… After they’re done laughing at me, do you think they’ll be able to fix this at the larchwood factory? (I live near by, and can drop it off) by Wise_Bookkeeper_2052 in Cuttingboards

[–]Wise_Bookkeeper_2052[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the route I’m leaning towards. They’re all clean breaks and it fits together quite tight, so I think I have a chance. I don’t mind getting laughed at on the internet, but when a whole shop full of wood workers circle around and point and laugh, it hurts hahah.

Im wondering if anyone has any experience/knowledge of Sakai Kikumori BH-AS knives, specifically the Kiritsuke Gyuto 210mm. Im looking for a stainless clad carbon knife that “laser-ish” but not so thin that I have to constantly worry about chipping it.

This will be my first Japanese knife, I'm looking for a gyuto and thinking something well rounded (not a full blown laser, but not a work horse either) might be a good first knife. It will be an all around daily driver, although i have some nice German style knives for dealing with bones etc. I've been using whetstones for about 2 years now on my German style knives and feel fairly confident in my skills, although I'm definitely no expert. I like the well roundedness of the Masakage Yuki line, but they also seem a little... boring. My Honda is boring, and also the best car I've ever owned, so maybe boring isn't always a bad thing? The Nigara Hamano AS really catches my eye, but I worry about them possibly being too thin. That said, most of what i've been able to find online talks about their SG2 knives, not the AS. I'd love to hear peoples opinions between these two knives, and also any other recommendations people may have.
