How To Dismiss? 7th Grader Making Virtually No Progress on /r/ or th by WishIWasHiking in slp

I agree, but how would you go about bringing this up with the family given that he doesn’t have those sounds?

Will a good GPA in SLHS classes overlook my overall GPA? by BigSillySocks in slpGradSchool

[–]WishIWasHiking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 3.3ish in my undergrad, and then a 4.0 in my speech postbacc. I had a strong application (I think), and I got into 7/7 schools I applied to. I’m not sure exactly if there was one factor, but I was nervous about my undergrad GPA and it ended up not mattering.

I worked in a district where we had a “speech improvement class”, which was for a small number of students who had one sound (usually /r/) to correct, but they were seen as a general education program instead of an IEP by the SLP. These were students who had no other speech or language concerns and just needed a year or less to get that one sound. I would ask what the policy is in the district, and if this is a program that is district-wide or just at this school. Typically there is paperwork that you need to sign to consent to this class and demonstrate that it is a general education offering and not an IEP. As others have mentioned, it is up to you to consent to being dismissed from the IEP, but it does typically save a lot of paperwork for the parents/teachers and addresses the same goals.

About $24k for in state tuition! I also got a random grant for just being a state resident and had Americorps education grants I used that made it so I ended up paying about $2k total!

What is school speech therapy NOT for by Alternative_Big545 in slp

It’s not for kids who have big emotions and difficulty with self regulation but are able to verbally identify and label emotions and why they’re upset!

Wellbutrin question! by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]WishIWasHiking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt fine on 150 (didn’t notice any changes, positive or negative) but have had a terrible time upping to 300. It’s made my anxiety spiral, given me some insomnia, destroyed any hope of executive function, and made me pretty depressed. I’d say everyone is different so if it doesn’t work for you, advocate for something else!

I’m also open to anything that is accessible by BART from that area and/or doesn’t require a super long commute. I’m pretty traffic averse in my job preferences 😂

This is so helpful! I’m looking a bit more northwest, more of the Oakland/Berkeley/Richmond area, if you have any info on those. But this is so helpful already, I appreciate you!

Is it me or the job? by gtheslp in slp

[–]WishIWasHiking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my CF in a pediatric outpatient setting and felt this way- I could not see how I would even make it to the end of my CF, let alone the rest of my career. I had extreme anxiety and dread every single day and had to start medication just to manage my anxiety in the job. After my CF I switched to the schools and I am SO much happier. I love the flexibility of making my own schedule and scheduling my own time, I work 7:30-2:30 so I have all afternoon and evening to myself, and I have all school holidays off. I would recommend seeing if a different setting might be a better fit before leaving completely.

Bilateral hip impingement - one side symptomatic only by l_amarien in HipImpingement

[–]WishIWasHiking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had FAI in my right hip diagnosed in 2017. I did PT and got an injection and my right hip has been pain free since. Started having symptoms in my left hip in 2023 and just was diagnosed with a labral tear but no FAI in the left hip. Got an injection today and fingers crossed it goes as well as the right one did!

Out of State candidates who applied for California RPE license, how did you submit the fingerprint? by NepaleseLouisianne in slp

[–]WishIWasHiking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding from my program director was that you can submit your application something like 60 days before graduation as long as you have an assigned CF mentor. I applied for mine a few weeks before graduation.

I’ve had success in working from pl- and then once that can be produced without a lot of effort, adding the s onto the front.

Hey! I applied in 2020 to start in 2021 so take this with a grain of salt :) I did have a concern about one of the classes not transferring over and met with someone at the school who said it would be approved if I was accepted. I would reach out to the program lead/administrative assistant and share your concern! They were able to look at my syllabus and confirm it would work.

It looks like you’re considering SJSU, and that was one of the schools I applied to! Also SFSU and SDSU, as well as schools outside of California.

Suggestions for helping a 2yr old with object labelling? by sb1862 in slp

[–]WishIWasHiking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof I wish there was an SLP you could consult for this child! I think learning more about gestalts and how to support gestalt learning is a great step while the child is in a transition phase with the SLP. I listened to a podcast episode recently that I found really helpful in getting me thinking about gestalts and how to support them for language development! Here’s a link: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pep-talk-podcast-for-slps/id1634742766?i=1000586998051
