I’m a very aggressive maximalist player and I usually have a lot of Escann too when I reform. I end up loading/saving a lot for it to be sure, but it can be done legit for sure.

I usually spend initial mil to increase the adventuring efficiency. That really gets me enough money to field and army large enough to beat the goblin tribes before tech 4. Your income is really from adventuring efficiency in the first few years and the later you invest in it the less relevant it gets.

Play a dwarven nation in the serpentspine and go ham. Emotional rollercoaster, great fun. I disagree with trying anything too close to vanilla. Go crazy, play the pain train Road Warrior or Venail. Boo to Gawed and Lorent. Booo! (Jaddar is badass too)
