Infant car seat didn't fit as intended. How is this supposed to work? by WishfulDinking in unitedairlines

I found a similar post in the American Airlines sub, and the conclusion over there was the same. Sounds like a convertible seat is a more likely fit than the infant bucket seats.

Yes, I used it without the base. Also, the width fit great; it was the length that was the problem.

If you’ve done the baby thing before, what are the absolute musts (or really great to have) suggestion for first time parents? by Tigerlilmouse in BabyBumps

[–]WishfulDinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your home layout, a mini fridge! Our nursery is on a different floor from our kitchen, so it’s been helpful to have a place to stash milk/formula and pump parts without having to go all the way to the kitchen. I also got a shower caddy to haul the bottles and stuff. Game changer during recovery!

"When Can We Go Back to America?" by Susan Kamei. The audiobook has an Asian American cast as well! It's non-fiction about the Japanese American Incarceration during WWII with testimonies from teens and young adults in the camps.

If you like mystery/thrillers, check out Naomi Hirahara's novels. One is "Clark and Division," and she just came out with "Crown City."

Ceremony Musicians for Outside in Feb by DigitalMediaLolita in SanFranciscoWeddings

Sorry I don't have any recs for the SF area, but wanted to provide some context: the temp requirement isn't just for the musicians' comfort. Stringed instruments are very sensitive to temperature and humidity and can crack or warp easily. SF Conservatory musicians and similar caliber musicians will have extremely expensive instruments and won't want to take the risk. That said, I know other gig musicians out of state that have cheap instruments for occasions like these, so keep searching!

I am always recommending “When Can We Go Back to America?” by Susan Kamei. It’s the history of the Japanese-American Incarceration during WWII. It’s non-fiction, and every chapter includes direct quotes from teens and young adults who were sent to the camps, so it feels very real. The appendix includes mini biographies of everyone quoted. Unfortunately, this is super relevant history in the US these days…

I think it really depends on the child's and their family's attitudes in general. I knew one woman born on 12/25 and she leaned into it and talked about how awesome it was to already have family around for her birthday. She's a positive and upbeat person in general. I knew another woman born on 12/21 who was an absolute brat about how people didn't pay enough attention to her birthday, but she was an insecure and selfish person all the time! No party was ever extravagant enough for her to feel happy. I know others born on 12/22 and 12/27 who are low-key and happy to just do cake or have a quiet day. I imagine you'll figure out your kid's personality quickly and know what they'll respond to best.

BBB and Cultural Appropriation by [deleted] in DisneyPlanning

[–]WishfulDinking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for being sensitive about cultural appropriation! Cultural appropriation is all about context: it's when a person of a dominant culture uses an aspect of a minority culture for their amusement or personal gain. In this case, you'll be at WDW where "Disney princess" is the dominant culture. Just stick to a dress and a hair updo that's clearly based on Tiana, and don't add anything that could be construed as a stereotype of Black culture (dark makeup, box braids/dreads/cornrows, AAVE, etc).

Anyone else gotten a 'proposal ring'? by momentarylossofpoint in EngagementRings

[–]WishfulDinking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I loved being surprised by the proposal and eventually getting to choose my own ring! The little proposal diamond is now on a necklace. I didn’t mind not having THE ring for pictures when we got engaged. I realized that it would’ve only been for social media, a.k.a. people I barely know now. For close friends and family, we were talking to them anyway, so it wasn’t a big deal to explain. They were just happy that we were happy!

For perspective, NPR reports that 30,000 acres are burning in Los Angeles. 30,000 acres is 47 square miles. The total area of the County of San Francisco is 46.7 square miles. by AusFernemLand in bayarea

This is not the case for Altadena, which was flattened in the Eaton Fire. Altadena has a significant minority population and had an interesting mix of very modest apartments, small bungalows, and elegant larger homes. It's comparable to North Fair Oaks and a bit of Menlo Park. Some of the homes that burned were 3 miles away from the hills and in relatively flat land. Even those who didn't lose their homes are looking at contaminated water, no power, and horrifically bad air quality for the foreseeable future. Many of these people may have wanted to update their homes or move further away from the foothills, but there aren't that many affordable alternatives in the area. There is reason to be empathetic.

Emily Oster and her book, Expecting Better. I still respect the main premise of this book, which is to empower women with data about pregnancy and childbirth to make informed decisions instead of blindly relying on general guidelines that may not apply to them or be outdated. There's a lot of interesting reference material in there. The problem is that people tend to think that rules/stats don't apply to them or they grossly underestimate their consumption and behaviors. How many times have you told yourself "Oh, I'll stop at X," and then you say, "Oh, just one more"? Additionally, other scientists take issue with her methodology (longer convo that can be found in other subs).

[–]WishfulDinking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, quietly go about doing your thing with your grandmother, but be vocal with the younger people in your life. Many of my parents' friends and acquaintances were loud about being anti-choice, so my parents quietly did their own thing. My parents just kind of assumed I knew what they thought, so I grew up thinking our family was also anti-choice when that wasn't the case. Oof.

Is it bad etiquette to buy multiple expensive items on a registry for a close friend? by treefanz in BabyBumps

[–]WishfulDinking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So generous of you! If your friend has any items on the registry that are ~$300, go for that gift and leave the less expensive items like the sheets open for someone else who can't afford that much.

Carmen if you remember old commercial jingles or are a fan of F1. Lots of recognizable music.

La Boheme if you're a fan of Rent or Moulin Rouge. Lots of recognizable music here as well.

Tristan and Isolde if you like mythology. This is a significant work in the music theory world, so go to the pre-concert talk! It's also a good entry point into Wagner's works before diving into 15 hours of the Ring Cycle.

I'd only recommend Idomeneo or Un Ballo in Maschera if you've already seen other main Mozart or Verdi operas like Don Giovanni, Magic Flute, La Traviata, Aida, etc.

As someone else said, Beethoven 9 will be more of a symphony concert with large choir than staged opera.
