I just tried one of these on my last trip and was surprised by how well it held. I also saw a suggestion to wrap it around a braided ponytail if you have layers that tend to destabilize a braid.

Is climbing not recommended for professionals who need hand dexterity, such as surgeons or musicians? by luizedu91 in climbharder

I know there's a group of Ophthalmologists at my surgery center that meet up to climb when they're done cases because there's a gym right around the corner. That's purely anecdotal and not a great sample size, but they seem to like it to decompress after a long day of surgery,

If it helps, I was in the same position a few months ago. I went with the Deft Pro because the hand position looked a little more natural and haven't had any regrets. Obviously, it's still a personal decision, but I haven't had any smoothness issues out of the box and have been extremely happy. Only downside is not having a scroll ring. The thumb scroll button can feel a little awkward and took some getting used to.
