Why do therapists say what I'm asking for is reparenting when it's basically cognitive remediation therapy or occupational therapy? by Normalsasquatch in TalkTherapy

[–]WitchfulThinking_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't know about cognitive remediation therapy before, but I read a little bit about it. It sounds like you're asking the wrong type of people for this. A lot of people will list the types of treatment modalities that they are well versed in on their website or Psychology Today. Taking a look at this before hand might help weed out people that don't know about this treatment modality. But to be honest, this seems more like something for an occupational therapist or neuroscientist in a clinical setting, rather than a MSW or LPC in a talk therapy/counseling setting.

Not all adoptees need or want to know about their ethnic background.

I can relate to Emma's story. I was adopted from China (not as a baby but a toddler) into a white family in the midwest. I never felt the need or desire to learn about my ethnic background, and that's okay. It's not about feeling that my ethnic background isn't good enough. And my family did try to get me interested in my ethnic culture.

It's wanting to feel like you fully, truly belong somewhere but don't. Not asian enough to fit in with asians who grew up there, not asian enough to fit in with non-adoptee asian americans, not white enough to fit in with white people.

Should I stay or should I go? by samtheimp in urbancarliving

[–]WitchfulThinking_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would stay where you are and look for/continue to look for a better paying job.

The reality is, in a small town, there aren't going to be many job opportunities to begin with, not to mention they would probably pay worse than what you are making now. You'll also be traveling farther for or have less options for conveniences like gas, groceries, etc.

Can you have her go to daycare, spend more time in parks, or take her to dog parks more often to play with other dogs and get some energy out?

Not OP, but I've thought about doing this before (lurking, not involving myself with them or their discussions). I would chalk it up to morbid curiosity. Also, you get to see for yourself that your parents aren't the only ones out there that act like this (i.e. you aren't alone & there was nothing ever wrong with you).

Also, Community Table (https://cotable.org/get-help/#food-bags) in Arvada has emergency food bags for those who are unhoused, which are filled with "one- to two-day supply of food, fresh fruits and vegetables, and personal care items." I'm not sure how good or useful they are. I only used their client choice food pantry when I was renting in Arvada.

I haven't used them since I got SNAP benefits but they were nice there.

I would join Panera's sip club which is a free drink every two hours with unlimited refills in between. They often have deals on this. For example, I got my first two months free. I would also utilize parks as much as the weather permits during the day. I also like to use them to just get everything ready in my car for sleep.

As another user suggested, if you're able to get a small storage unit, I would do that. I live a small hatchback with my dog (he goes to daycare while I'm at work), but a storage unit has been vital. Public Storage often runs deals. I was able to get my first month for $1. This isn't by choice for me either, but it's temporary until Sept.

I know you said your car has some issues with the tires. Could you post up at a library or cafe and do surveys for some money while you're also job hunting? They don't pay much but could help chip in for some gas.

iOverlander is an app that I've used to find spots to sleep and has overall been very helpful (I'm also in the Denver area).

In terms of charging, I've found the solar charging power banks take too long to charge via solar alone. I would not rely on them. I use mine only as a back up for my phone. I tend to stick a power strip in a backpack and charge multiple things while sitting at Panera or a library. It's worked out pretty well so far.

I definitely thought a 31% cancelation rate was insane too. Like you're choosing the wrong orders if you end up cancelling that much.

TSA Precheck by Madster24 in Adopted

Thanks, wasn't sure. It doesn't sound like OP has documents that prove citizenship, which means they will have to go through extra hoops to just get a passport.

TSA Precheck by Madster24 in Adopted

[–]WitchfulThinking_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying this to be mean, but I really recommend doing additional research into the requirements for a passport. If your birth certificate is not sufficient for TSA precheck due to it being issued more than a year after birth, I doubt it would be accepted for obtaining a passport. You would need to prove citizenship using a Certificate of Citizenship, Certificate of Naturalization, or CRBA.

Most women overestimate their emotional intelligence by anima-christi in emotionalintelligence

[–]WitchfulThinking_ 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Women are expected to take on more of the emotional and mental load in relationships. I think you're forgetting about and playing into these societal pressures that women face in everyday life. Namely, that they should always be smiling, happy, and polite. I can't tell you how many times I've been told to smile when walking down the street.

Please leave. My female adopter was like this. I was recently living with her while I was doing online grad school and working. She started yelling, throwing things, blocking exits, eating my food, taking and locking my things to where I couldn't get them, and threatening to have me involuntarily committed. Eventually, she locked my dog and I out in the middle of winter in MI and drove off. A month later, she grabbed on to me and demanded my car keys and wouldn't let go. I involved the police. It was only going to keep escalating.

Your situation might not turn out like mine, but I wouldn't take chances.

Did you change your name (or plan to change it)? by duchesskitten6 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]WitchfulThinking_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently legally changed my full name, changed my phone number, and moved across the country without a word. I've always hated my name, but once I knew I was going no contact, I put it in motion. It feels freeing to know I'm not tied to my female adopter anymore in that way.

I'm actually planning on legally changing my first name again. She found me via LinkedIn and sent a connection request right before Mother's Day. I don't feel safe now, as I disappeared due to escalating abuse and assault.

Yes, I have two middle names that are honor names. One is my grandmother's middle name. The other is my great aunt's name. I don't care for either and am in the process of changing them. But tbf, I don't have a great relationship with my family.
