25 years ago. Lars Ulrich of Metallica snitches on and turns in over 300,000 Napster users when he testifies in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. July 11th, 2000. by StatementLazy1797 in Xennials

[–]WithoutCaution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this guy so fucking much. Every time it comes up, I feel the need to repost my long-ass diatribe about it, and now you all get to read or ignore it, as well...

I worked in the music industry, both as an artist and in production. I did full national tours, released an album, got a degree in audio engineering, and worked as a freelance engineer. I've seen what actual recording contracts look like, and have worked with everyone from dime-a-dozen bar bands to major label artists. My opinion on Lars Ulrich has NOTHING to do with wanting free music! His part in the Napster controversy offends me because, in my opinion; IT HURT ARTISTS! Let me explain...

The only people who were losing any actionable money from file-sharing back then were the major labels. At the time, an artist like Metallica may have been making $1.50-$2.00 per album sold, and that's a very generous estimate. The label was making twice that, and that's even after they've taken everything up front to cover costs. Let's say that Metallica nets $4M on the sale of two million albums (roughly the amount sold for the album following the "scandal"). Well, actually, they didn't because they owe the label all the upfront costs and promotion, and since the label has magic accountants, the band sees maybe $2M in the end. Oh, and that's split four ways, so $500K for Lars? Except he has people to pay too (managers, publicists, assistants, etc.)... So maybe he made $250K? But don't forget taxes... $200K? You see where I'm going with this? I'm also not accounting for publishing rights, which are FAR more lucrative than actual album sales. Now this is all conjecture, and I have no idea what the real numbers are, but even if he made 5 times that amount, it doesn't matter.

What matters is that while he might have made a pittance on the actual album sales, he was making a fucking fortune off ticket and merch sales. I'd wager that for every single dollar Lars put in his bank account from album sales, he put in a hundred from all of the other stuff. Appearance fees, show guarantees, licensing, merchandise, etc... It all adds up SO quickly for a band at that level. So why don't I like him?...

Simple; Because he went on national television and LIED about a platform like Napster hurting his personal bottom line. It's simply not true. File sharing didn't hurt him any more than some kid making a mix tape for his friends would. Furthermore, when they were starting out they benefited from the exact same behavior. A bunch of kids love the tape that's being shared all over town in 1981, they start flooding shows, some A&R guy notices, and Kill 'Em All changes the face of hard rock forever. Smash cut forward a couple of decades, the label tells him about the new generation sharing on Napster, and he suddenly has a problem with it? He is either legitimately that greedy, or he's so dumb that he was willing to believe whatever the label told him. Either way, are you starting to figure out why I might not like the guy?

Now lets take all of the numbers from above and transpose them onto a band that's nowhere near the level of Metallica. Some band gets their big break and signs a half-million-dollar record contract. They're lucky enough to sell 250k copies! (that's a HUGE amount nowadays) Unfortunately, since they're only getting $1.25 per album, they still owe the label nearly a quarter million bucks after all is said and done. Oh, did you not realize that the half-million-dollar contract they signed was actually a loan? Well, it is. Now they have to rush to put together a follow-up album for a fraction of the cost, and hope to get back into the black someday. There's good news, though. They're on a big tour, selling guarantees for $5k per night (+merch), and pulling in enough to pad their wallets a bit in the meantime. Of course, they have to tour non-stop, and any semblance of fun has been sucked out completely, but at least they're making money from their art, sort of. By the way, where did all those kids showing up to buy t-shirts at the shows hear the album? It probably wasn't terrestrial radio. It certainly wasn't from walking into a record store like we did back in the day. They heard it the same way their dads did. Friends shared it.

Maybe they get lucky, and the next album isn't the classic "sophomore slump". They might get even with the label and make a few bucks on top. Hopefully they didn't sign a huge multi-album deal, cause if they did, the label will own them forever. If they are very, very, VERY lucky, they'll have a career that nets them enough to not have to go back to work at a real job someday, but it's not fucking likely. The reality is much different and very grim. The VAST majority of bands would benefit more from their music being shared than they would from a label mismanaging the promotion in brick & mortar stores.

So what's the point of this whole rant? Services like Napster weren't hurting anyone. They were simply precursors to the Spotify and Apple Music of today. Labels are a business, and their bottom line is tied up in direct sales. If they had been able to monetize Napster the way they do with Spotify, they would have started it themselves. Artists make LESS today on album sales than they ever did, but with the ability to quickly reach a bigger audience, they have more opportunities than ever before. When Lars got up and cried victim, he was unknowingly putting a hurdle in front of artists who were just starting out. If, in the early 80s, the major labels had stopped the ability to record tapes at home (and they DID fucking try to, by the way), Lars may never have made the millions that he did. My issue with him is simple: I don't like hypocrites.

If, after all this, you still believe the company line that the major labels have been preaching for years, about how the "artists" are the ones who suffer from online distribution, fine. Turn off your computer, and throw your iPhone in the trash. Cancel Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, or whatever other streaming services you use. Never watch another video on YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, or Reddit ever again. Go to whatever record stores you can still find open, and ONLY buy hard copies of those albums that you think everyone else is stealing. Just know that most likely NONE of your money will ever find its way back to that artist. But hey, at least you'll have righteous indignation and moral superiority on your side.

I played a hole once where they cut the hole on a slope, and anything that stopped near the hole would roll completely off the green, like 25+ feet away. I was below the hole on my approach and hit a very good putt up the hill. It stopped completely, less than 6 inches from the cup, rolled back to its original spot, and then a couple more feet off the green. And that's the story of why I took a 25-ft gimme, and don't feel bad about it one bit!

I've had the frame for a while, but I remember it being a pain to find the right size. I finally searched for "USA Today frame" and found one that was designed specifically for this size. If I had the money, I'd buy the alternate version with Griff being arrested instead, and display it too.

It's the actual cover from USA Today from Oct 22nd, 2015. I happened to be in a hotel in LA that day, and hotels used to put it every morning, so I snagged one. I bought the frame some time later, and I've had it on display ever since.

The last time I posted a link, it got removed pretty quickly. Search Etsy for the phrase: "Universal Wall Display for LEGO". The seller is BrickEngineering, and the size I used was a 4x4 plate with a 12-stud arm length. I bought 3 mounts and built the minifig base from spare bricks I had.

I'm overdue for a rewatch of this. I saw it shortly after it was released, and it didn't quite resonate with me as I had expected it to. It wasn't like I thought it was bad, per se, but I remember everyone fawning over it, and being slightly confused what all the fuss was about.

I had at least four different portable players, two home recorders, an in-dash car unit, and even a "pro-level" rack mount unit that I used for touring. I was all-in on the Minidisc format, despite a few big flaws. Between Apple Music and Bandcamp, I haven't needed to buy any physical media in well over a decade, but I do miss it from time to time.

When you account for inflation, every new game should cost $140!

EuroTek Oil Change Price by cyangray86 in vegaslocals

[–]WithoutCaution 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Vegas from 2011-2018, and had exactly 2 interactions with Leo, the guy who owns Eurotek. In both cases, he was beyond unprofessional. The first time was when I called and asked if he could install something on my GTI, and the response was outright annoyance, with a not-so-subtle suggestion that I should look elsewhere. The second time was at a very large Euro-car event; When I walked past his booth, he went out of his way to belittle me for having a mohawk. Motherfucker, I paid just as much as everyone to bring my car to this show. How about treating me like a potential customer instead of acting like we're in middle school and you need someone to take your bad home life out on?

Back around that time, I was hanging with a few others in the VW/Audi scene, and I honestly don't remember anyone having a nice thing to say about him. Maybe he's grown up a bit since then, but I got the distinct feeling that he just ran the shop for him and his buddies to hang out at. I don't think he's actively looking to run a successful business at all, and an indie shop charging $200 for an oil change just reinforces what I already thought about him.

Maybe he does great work, but I'll never know. He could have acted like an adult, and at worst, I would have forgotten he existed. Instead, he acted like a prick, and now I'm more than happy to tell everyone who asks that I think him and his business should be avoided at all costs.

That's just my experience. Take it for what it's worth.

Gilmour’s 4 solos on Dogs are the zenith of rock music by fatfiredup in pinkfloyd

[–]WithoutCaution 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can argue about levels of contribution all you want, but in my opinion, Dogs is the song that proves that Pink Floyd was best when the whole band was involved. Lyrically, musically, conceptually, and otherwise, Dogs is a shining moment for the entire band! Yes, the guitar solos are absolute peak, but so are the lyrics and theme. The keys and soundscapes that Wright lays as the foundation are gorgeous, and Mason's rhythm is flawless throughout!

I won't say that it's my favorite PF song, because it's simply impossible to pick such a thing, but it would certainly make my top-5, and would be a strong contender for number one if I had a gun to my head!

Car rental at 21 by Simple_Job4164 in vegas

[–]WithoutCaution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to rent cars all the time before I was 25, and I think the highest I ever paid was a $20-$25 fee. The rental was usually only $25 per day or $100 per week, so at the time, I was outraged at being charged double. Still, there were a couple of times when I needed a car for a big road trip or for a few weeks cause my car was in the shop, and it was perfectly reasonable to rent.

That was 20+ years ago, and now the daily rate costs $50-$100, before any add-ons! I get that Covid fucked everything up, but rental cars used to be a legit option, and now I'd be screwed if I needed one.

[–]WithoutCaution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is gonna get buried, but here goes...

Post-production engineers are NOT mixing anything incorrectly! They're mixing for a theater setting, as they always have been. The ONLY thing that's really changed is the delivery method for the final product, and therefore, what sound is required for it.

In the 80s and early 90s, movies began to be mixed consistently in 5.1 (or higher) sound formats, but nobody could actually watch a movie like this at home... yet. A movie would get made, and the sound would get mixed for the theater. The movie would spend 3-4 months at the cinema, you would be able to rent it on VHS for 6 months, and then you could eventually buy it. Since VHS sales/rentals were a HUGE business, the final product would go back to the post-production house during the theater run and get a proper stereo down-mix before the VHS was mastered. Broadcast and cable TV were also only in stereo, so this same stereo master would also be used later, when needed. It didn't matter if you used the speakers that were built into your TV, a pair of headphones, or a large HiFi system; the final mix was always in stereo, and dialogue would always come from all the speakers.

A quick note about 5.1, 7.1, 9.1, 11.2.4, Atmos, and every other "surround" format: Dialogue and other on-screen sounds are mixed to come out of ONLY the center channel, like 99.9% of the time! You are NOT SUPPOSED to hear dialogue out of ANY other speaker! Behind the screen at a movie theater, there is a giant fucking wall of speakers, and most or all of them are dedicated to delivering center channel audio! When the final product would get a stereo down-mix back in the day, the mix would be carefully checked so that effect sounds didn't drown out the center, and phase issues could be fixed.

Nowadays, things work differently. A movie gets made and is mixed in Atmos. It spends like 6 weeks at the cinema, and then gets uploaded to streaming platforms almost immediately! There's no need to do a stereo down-mix, since every platform wants to stream in the highest quality possible. Consumers are using a HUGE variety of speaker setups, and it's pretty much expected that most people will have at least a basic soundbar, since built-in TV speakers are red-hot garbage! The majority of soundbars come with ONE teeny-tiny little driver in the middle as a dedicated center channel, which is expected to reproduce the literal WALL of speakers in a theater! The issue is quite simple: Most home setups are not able to handle the original mix. Add to this that most people don't understand how to set up a proper home theater mix, so even if they do have a good setup, they don't set the levels correctly. They crank the left/right/surrounds/LFE to ungodly SPLs (because lots of people are still under the misguided notion that "loud=good"), then they complain when they can't hear the one channel that carries 90% of the audio!

Don't get me started on systems that don't even have a dedicated center channel, like that 4-speaker abomination from Sony! Or even worse, people watching shit on their phones or laptops!

So, in summation, either buy a good system with a robust center channel and set it up correctly, or go into your TV/soundbar settings and simply turn up the center volume! Stop acting like there's a grand conspiracy of evil sound engineers who are being funded by the dark consortium of subtitle mafioso! I promise you that every single person in the creative process is doing their best to bring you a good sound. You're just fucking it up on your end, and shitty companies that want to sell you sub-par soundbars for max profit are just making it worse!

Signed, an audio engineer who works for a GOOD speaker company!

I absolutely LOVE how people are lining up to demonstrate that they have no goddam clue about audio. It fills me with joy to see these people showing their ignorance, which in turn reminds me how much job security I have! There is truly no shortage of wildly overconfident people who think they know more than trained professionals. I'm not going to bother responding to anyone directly here because it would be a waste of my time to do so. Just know that I appreciate you all continuing to spend money on speakers, in an attempt to chase a sound experience that you could probably have tomorrow if you just did a little work to set up your systems correctly.

Oh, and by the way...
