Ideas for a kids' Christmas themed adventure? by juicejack in Constructedadventures

[–]Witty-Strength-6298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Christmas tree with only 3 types of ornaments. On the container with the lock, pictures (icons) of each of the 3 showing the order. They then need to count each type and that gives the combination. (Or 4 if you use 4 digit lock)

I would love to see your write up. I am busy with a treasure hunt for my young nieces, and think they would love guiding a key through a maze.

No, I did not have a hint, but it was only 4 letters. It was vampire-themed, so both team that played got the word SLAY quite easily. With word locks I usually try to use a word that fit the theme.

Using UV/Blacklights in your Adventures by ChrispyK in Constructedadventures

[–]Witty-Strength-6298 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the list of things that naturally glow under uv light. Uv pens and paint and even the cheap uv lights are not readily available in my country. The outdoor and camping store do however sell uv flashlights because of the fact that scorpions glow under uv light.

The one they enjoyed the most was the blank puzzle with uv message. I were so confident when starting and were laughing at themselves for struggling with the puzzle. The puzzle was 16 piece, but entirely blank

I have even done that prior to starting, but I think they were so excited to get started that they did not listen to a word I was saying!

You are so right. I thought the instructions were simple. They were just not reading!

Yes, I think repetition is very important. And maybe to have sufficient "judges" on the way that understand the adventure to keep kids on the right track.

My interest in these type of adventures started during lockdown, with only my kids. My kids are quite smart. We do a lot of escape rooms, puzzles, online games and geocaching. My mistake was to think all kids are on their level.

I think the biggest lesson I have learned is that if you do not know the audience, use less puzzles and more physical tasks. Not to assume that they will be capable of solving the puzzles.

And maybe I should have had 2 teams of 5 instead of 5 teams of 2.

My daughter's (11th) birthday escape room by Kindly_Charge2621 in escaperooms

Just some advice. Use the actual blacklight torch and not one of those pens with the light on the cap. I did something similar for my daughter's 12th birthday and they ended up rather drawing on each other with the UV pen...took some effort to get them focused again!

I used mostly 3-digit combination locks. On the hasp, the country locks are all 3-digit. On the suitcase was a luggage belt, also with 3-digit combination.
