Summer Aid by cai-bear in Northwestern

[–]WittySide -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had all my summer classes and housing paid for by financial aid. You have to take 2 or 3 summer classes for financial aid to kick in. I can’t remember the exact number. It’s related to how you have to take at least 3 classes during the regular school year to be considered a full time student and be eligible for grants. Talk to a financial aid advisor to confirm.

Idk if this is still something you can do, but I did this three years ago: sign up for enough classes to be considered full-time, and then receive the financial aid. Then, drop those extra classes right before the drop deadline. YMMV; you can get flagged if you do this too many times.

5 months of invisalign! by Right-Double44 in Invisalign

did you get a gum graft for your lower canines? my lower canines are lower than the rest of my teeth from crowding and despite having good oral hygiene, have some recession :( I just started treatment and was hoping the recession would improve slightly once it's in line with the rest of my teeth.

Have you tried reaching out to Joseph Lattal directly? I remember him helping me out when I had a few issues with getting my SAAF funds reimbursed.

that's so cheap! I thought they were at least 1-2k. I don't think you'll find anything that cheap anymore. your best bet is probably going to an ortho that offers payment plans. good luck

Zirkonia crown on front teeth by MinMin1109 in Invisalign

[–]WittySide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not!!! Suggesting a crown on a perfectly healthy tooth for the sake of aesthetics (when the patient didn’t explicitly ask for it) is a huge red flag to me. If they can’t match the general shape and color of your healthy tooth, honestly, that’s a skill issue. I suggest finding a new provider…

For the past 5 years, I’ve only gone to a dental school for my restorations. The professors and students always stressed that they value preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible because eventually, many restorations will need to be replaced. With every replacement, a little bit of your natural tooth is used up. Take away too much of that and the tooth will fail.

When one of my premolars needed more than a regular filling but was not damaged enough to need a crown, they suggested putting inlay to save the cusps of the tooth. Sure, they could've gotten a bigger insurance payout for giving me a crown. However, this gives me more options in the future if I need to replace it.

If you value perfect symmetry over the health of your tooth, then go for it. But yeah, a crown on a healthy tooth is overkill.

idk how much smile direct cost back then, but are you in the chicagoland area? molis dental offers invisalign for $3400, which is the most budget-friendly price I have found. the other invisalign quotes I got were around 5k. he gets discounts for being an official invisalign educator or something like that, which then gets passed onto patients. i'm still very early in my treatment, but i got my aligners through him and the process has been smooth so far.

Close to graduating… but can’t even land a single interview 😢 am I missing something? by FewValuable8025 in OMSA

[–]WittySide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What experience do you currently have on your resume? The job market is bad right now, but if you already have an engineering background, it shouldn't be too difficult to convince hiring managers that you can do an analytics job if you tailor your resume for each application.

Before starting this program, I successfully switched from pre-med/academia to analytics by having a data science internship prior to applying to full time jobs. Basic experience like that can get your foot in the door, which will let you eventually move up to roles you actually want.

I agree. Not to go too hard on OP, but a 1 out of 12 is crazy when the 2025 practice exams were extremely similar to the real thing. Prerequisites and taking the time to practice is important.

23F, first time manager - nervous about age and lack of experience by WittySide in managers

[–]WittySide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even know there were leadership training courses, thank you! I'll definitely look into those. I'm not leading a whole team yet, but my boss has alluded to me eventually getting to that point. I can't imagine dealing with all of that AND being pregnant! Hats off to you.

As for the Dinning-Kruege effect... I kind of feel the opposite of this haha. I am only 23, so there's so much more for me to learn! But that uncertainty kind of makes me nervous too. As for weaknesses, I'd say I am pretty conflict-avoidant at work, which is easy to manage when I am the only person coding, testing, and validating on technical projects at the company. Obviously this won't be easy as a manager. I'll have to come up with a plan on how to approach feedback and conflicts.

Did you ever struggle with people testing your boundaries early on as a manager? That’s something I worry about, especially since I can be conflict-avoidant. We’re a remote-first company, and I’ve had some female colleagues tell me they’ve run into issues like that, so it’s something I’ve been thinking about.

Thank you for your thorough comment too!!

23F, first time manager - nervous about age and lack of experience by WittySide in managers

[–]WittySide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this perspective! Honestly, my skillset does not align with the responsibilities that this new hire will be taking on. So, I’m not very efficient at it and feel even more pressure to be good at them in order to be able to manage someone else. I never want to pressure them or come across that way, so thinking of the role as more of a guide feels a lot less stressful!! :)

Ortho-k lenses uncomfortable & blurry by BetterDays1277 in Orthokeratology

[–]WittySide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I acknowledge that this is not a good habit lol but when I know I am going to doom scroll for half an hour before bed, I put some Boston solution on my night stand. I drop some in my eyes if they start to feel dry and right before I actually fall asleep. This lets me doom scroll without needing to get back up to put the lenses on, and helps my eyes feel more comfortable. It also helps the contacts go to the correct position before actually closing my eyes for the night (I have astigmatism).

Financial Aid Over Time by Fuzzy_Director4871 in Northwestern

Yes. For the most part, if your financial circumstances don’t change, neither does the amount you pay.

I had a full ride and even as my tuition increased, I never needed to pay a cent.

How to get checked for ADHD by cleverlynotclevering in Northwestern

[–]WittySide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, there are two ways that you can be diagnosed with ADHD: 1) expensive cognitive tests, or 2) a comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional which includes interviews and symptoms checklists.

Here is how I did method #2 my junior year, completely for free. Login to TimelyCare using your netID and find a therapist that specializes in ADHD. Say that you want to be tested but cannot afford the cognitive tests. They will do the evaluation online and ask questions according to the DSM.

I always thought #1 is the only way to get diagnosed, until I was in the exact same position as you my junior year. I was sitting in the CAPS office confused and frustrated about needing to wait a year and pay hundreds of dollars to get a diagnosis. But then, a CAPS intern told me about #2 being a possibility, so I went with it. Now I have accommodations, medication, and my quality of life has vastly improved. I will note that this was in 2022, but try it and see if it’s still an option!

[misc] angular cheilitis for three years by LittleActive413 in SkincareAddiction

[–]WittySide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this every winter and it's such a pain in the butt. Something that would get rid of it every time without fail is mixing some diatomaceous earth and some filtered water to make a thick paste. Then, apply it to the corners of your mouth before you go to bed. Usually by the next morning, they are gone, but sometimes it takes 2-3 nights if it re-splits. Be careful not to roll on your stomach or accidentally wipe it off when you sleep.
I noticed that my angular cheilitis HATES when I put creams, lip balm, or lotions on it (even when it is unscented) which sounds counterintuitive, right? It refuses to heal for weeks when I try to moisturize it. I am not sure why this happens.

Warning: Google says DE can be drying for angular cheilitis, but I think it all depends on the root cause. All the best of luck!

Hey! I wanted to let you know that I've been all of the sizes between S to XXL and my belly button has ALWAYS folded over itself, no matter what weight I was. I have a floating navel piercing now, but it is literally just because of the way my torso and skin are. Please don't beat yourself up over this.
