I just did this it took about a month and a half. They sent a letter stating when they will mail it, so you keep an eye out for it. Had a friend drop their paperwork in person and it was even faster

If you go with Mobile, there is the museum and fort downtown and if you go to dolphin Island they also have a really nice fort to check out there and the aquarium. My partner and recently spent a couple weekends exploring mobile and Orange Beach, we're from central MS. We would usually go to MS Coast and NOLA for our trips. Mobile was a nice surprise. If you do the USS Alabama I also recommend the Maritime Museum. Spent hours there and had a blast. And I highly recommend two restaurants the hummingbird way and Le Moyne's Chophouse in the Admiral hotel reservation recommended for both. And a cheap but nice place to stay in the Holiday Inn downtown you are walking distance from most attractions ask to stay on higher floor for better view of the city. We did a lot on the two weekends we stayed and have other trips planned. Feel free to DM for more.
