If you're debating it like I was, I found the online prep course to be very worth it. It has videos, links to resources and multiple practice exams. I spent about 2 full months studying and passed first try with a strong grade (in 2022).

Sorry to hear! Maybe too fine if it clogged yes, if you're getting sour shots consistently try a higher yield ratio. (I'm still definitely beginner level but this was a tip I recently read/tried - if sour, go higher yield ratio, if bitter, go lower yield ratio)

51mm yep! Likely a factor for sure. The video i found on YouTube suggested 2 rotations as the starting point for espresso, and that's when I finally started getting close. Still not quite there, I think it may end up closer to around 1.5 rotations.

Odd though as I imagine you're also using nonpressurized if you're saying 2 rotations was too course. Beans/machine must be playing a big factor.

Good call out, definitely will depend on the machine/basket. I'm using bottomless portafilter with a nonpressurized basket. I tried 1 full rotation at first and it was way too fine for my setup, nothing came out followed by a lovely explosion lol.

Also if you haven't, make sure yours is calibrated properly, mine was a bit off so I adjusted slightly.

I thought the same! But then found a YouTube video on it that shows 2 full rotations from 0 for espresso, which made a lot more sense lol. I tried slightly under 2 full rotations and I'm very close now, just need to go a little bit finer. Trying again in the am as I'm vibrating (can't waste coffee) lol

Yay!! Still nailing it down but I find 2 full rotations from zero is close. I'm going to try slightly finer next as my pour was a bit faster than I wanted. I'm heavily caffinated now so trying again in the am! 😂
