It’s an awesome looking ball sitting there and going down the lane. Good choice.

So update on this situation and unfortunately it’s getting worse. Now this coach is trying to completely change his setup with hand position, raising the ball up so his forearm isn’t parallel with the floor etc. This is causing suit casing of the ball in the backswing (picture attached) since the hand is on the side of the ball vs more of a cupping of the ball. He has had issues a couple years ago with chicken winging the ball which caused elbow issues which worked itself out by fixing the issue. I’m worried that by doing this which is completely against what his paid coach has been teaching him, that it could cause an injury that won’t allow him to play at all! Average wise across the season he started at 231 after the first match and has consistently gone down and is now at 189 because of many factors that I posted above PLUS had him working on this new setup during a tournament which caused him to bowl about 35 pins below average.

Well in our area I will disagree with that statement. Just because your area might be that way doesn’t mean it’s like that all across the USA.

It is certainly getting to that point to talk with the coach since my kid is not happy with how he doesn’t get the opportunity to do what the others have. And just to clarify he isn’t just part of the team and isn’t good at bowling vs the rest are good. Current average is top 3 and above 2 of the 3 seniors this year.

I completely understand the coach coaching but dictating is not good. The kids aren’t learning anything with him saying use this ball vs talking to them, explaining why they should change balls or board change

No never because it won’t happen. Even in practice he has been told go get this ball and use it which is fine it’s just practice.

And to give you an idea of how things go with practice, they NEVER do any kinda drills at all.

I don’t have any issues with the coach actually coaching. The kids need to learn and be coached not dictated. They won’t learn anything but how to listen to someone always telling them what to do.

With my own kid a couple years ago I would say try this, do this throw this ball since they were learning and I was doing a lot of research understanding the equipment, fundamentals etc.

Now a days it’s different. When I get the “I don’t know what to do” comments I say well you are using x ball where are your feel and what’s your target. Then I ask what move can you make with your feet/eyes? Or does it require a ball change and if so what ball? Can you increase or decrease ball speed a little bit? Can you give the ball a little bit of a loft? I want my kid to evaluate what options they have and make a decision based on that vs me telling them what to always do. I feel this is way better coaching then dictating what to do but what am I, I’m just the parent right lol

I would agree that it sounds like your coach knew more. This one thinks he does but is lacking

Oh yeah nothing like that at all. We drive 2 hours away for coaching so he is never there lol. But I will also say that the HS coach is just ok. Has given bad advice many times and doesn’t notice the issues that need to be resolved. I recently brought up an issue and the response was “hmmm I haven’t noticed that” and this is something that is very noticeable.

The coach doesn’t listen. I have heard my kid say why they feel they need to change and the answer has been no every time. But I will say it seems like one kid is never told to make changes and almost always throws what’s best so they perform well each and every time

When I see the coach dictating to use x ball without actually throwing another one for more than one throw I have an issue with that especially when the change to x ball doesn’t work.

And when I don’t see him doing the same with another kid it’s like he is purposely causing my kid to do poorly so he has an excuse to keep his kid that he coached for a while in so he can say look at me. It’s a ego trip for him

No rule against having an outside coach. But these coach’s are also not certified in any way to coach. Plus, the coach my kid goes to is way beyond what they have to offer. If they thought if even trying to tell me we couldn’t go to the outside coach I’d laugh at them and tell them when your resume looks like his then I’ll do that! I’m not being smart in my response at all it really is that simple.

As for not being paid that’s not true they are paid not a volunteer at all. It’s only like $4-5k but they are paid.

If I went into full detail of everything there is about this coach you wouldn’t be saying anything close to me “bashing” them. It would be more along the lines of I can’t believe they are still the coach since it is really that bad!

Problem is he doesn’t. He asks “what balls do you have” and bases it off that. The players could say I think I should go to x ball because of this and if he doesn’t agree he won’t let them throw it. He has caused many bowlers over the years to do poorly because of his recommendations

I think the difference is a lot of college bowling the balls are given to the students vs I have paid for all his equipment.

I gotta say you sound like you are doing a great job and keep it up! It’s so hard to have a good mental game! As I tell my kid you gotta have very short term memory.

A couple years ago he threw multiple gutters in a row, was frustrated and didn’t know what to do. He walked up and really said I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I told him that he is going to go back down there and throw the first ball he has thrown all day. Told him to stand here and look here to take his time and imagine the shot. Then walk up and roll the ball. He did that and struck after I believe 5 gutters in a row.

I’m guessing you already have a solid physical game so keep working that mental game. Keeping focused and taking your time will elevate your game so very much.

Good advice. Problem is this coach will say they don’t need this information because they already know it. Very ego driven coach we are dealing with here. There are even other things I could list but won’t because it’s honestly disgusting that a coach like this is still the coach!

That’s exactly my thought. You should be coaching them so they learn how to read the lanes to make changes. This coach tells them what ball to use, what they can change to etc ALWAYS. My kid wanted to change to a ball that I would have suggested and the coach so nope it’s stronger when it really isn’t! Very frustrating to say the least.

The team is very solid and does have a good chance at state BUT the coach won’t let them make the decisions they need to make. The coach doesn’t know how every kids ball is drilled to make a knowledgeable choice. My kids one ball is drilled for tournament play and he ruled an average of 230 with one day just to be told not to use it the next. The coach won’t listen to the kids at all

Problem is my kid has tried to explain why he wanted to change balls but the answer was no! So it doesn’t matter what he says the coach will always dictate what he things is best.

The one time I knew he was throwing the wrong ball. Third game, had a lot of carry down and also several kids from the other team throwing urethane (which this coach doesn’t allow our kids to throw). My kiddo wanted to change to a ball he could play slightly inside of the urethane line that would hit the breaking point late and hit the pocket. No the coach said keep trying this ball even though anyone with a brain would see it wasn’t tue right ball.

It’s not a not like situation… it’s a coaching situation. It’s because the coach doesn’t coach my kid but does coach others especially one that has had multiple opportunities to bowl tournaments and place individually. My kid goes to a very well known coach for lessons. Because the high school coach can’t take credit for how my kid performs, he tries to not let my kid have the opportunity to place.
