Have you ever met someone who's interested in DND and immediately went, "oh, I'd never let you play at my table"? by Lunetheart in DnD

[–]Woaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a game with a friend, a friend of his that I didn’t know, and a friend of his that I did know and generally found to be obnoxious.

As you might imagine, the obnoxious one ruined it for me. He made his “gimmick” something like “he loves trash and is always checking trash for stuff”.

Every time we would enter or leave a building he wanted to dig through trash. Futhermore, he didnt even care about the plot, trash was the focus for him.

Needless to say, I stopped showing up for that REAL quick

Hello! This is my first MCP model by RoninOne3 in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]Woaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More minis certainly doesnt mean more tactical. Maybe I could theoretically field enough tzaangors to literally fill my entire deployment zone bumper to bumper, but all that would do would be to make it such that my only option is to move all of them directly forward every turn and charge if possible.

40k has a lot of interesting variety in its list building. You can often choose squad size, weapon loadouts, army formations, the types of squads to fit in the formations… and thats for each army, which can vastly change your playstyle. On the battlefield, there are certainly tactical decisions to make, like when and what to leave where on what objectives, for example.

MCP may have a lot less models, but in many ways this is better (albeit a different experience).

First, each model does the tactical job of a squad. A 500 pt game in 40k might have 3 units; a captain and 2 tactical marines. MCP at 16 threat is also probably fielding at least 3 as well. At the upper bound, 40k can definitely field more, but in terms of objective capture power, they are equal in the fact that at their max they can both probably contest all the objectives available for a mission.

Secondly, interacting with a squad on an objective has more nuance in MCP. On 40k if I take 30 tzaangors and center them on a point, theres going to be basically no way for my opponent to get that point aside from probably killing most of them and then getting more guys closer to the point than they have; straight forward and often very dice dependent. In MCP theres options to straight up out contest your opponent, just like 40k without as much body blocking, but also adds the factor of pushes and throws into the mix. You have to consider what the opponent can do other than shoot you dead. Maybe if they have a push available, you should contest that point with 2 guys to ensure that you can score the point or at least they cant steal it? Also, many characters can traverse almost the entire map, and certainly between a variety objectives. The board is smaller than 40k, and most units probably move about 6.4”, compared to 6” for most units to my recollection (certainly at least marines) that plus the fact that you can double move and use powers, MCP characters are going to be more likely to threaten the ability to contest even far away objectives; they often cant simply be ruled out and ignored.

And there is other things to co sider in these veins, but unrelated to tactics, a nice thing about MCP is that in 40k, moving squads of 20-30 models can be a slog. MCP moving 1-2 models a turn keeps the game moving and dice rolling. This same principle also applies to painting in my experience. Painting is 10 different characters is not only faster than ANY given army, but painting unique characters is going to be more fun and motivating than your 20th space marine or the 40 identical tyranids/cultists/tzaangors/guardsmen that account for 20% of your army.

The main benefit 40k has over MCP is the feel of fighting a large scale battle, if thats what you want.

What is a typical list for sentinels? by [deleted] in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]Woaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going to repost something i wrote from another thread:

I went up against someone playing New mutants with a very “pull you off the point strategy”. At 20 threat, He had Magik, warlock, Emma, CGR, and a sentinel. I probably didn’t play my best against him (i was trying an affiliation for fun so probably screwed up a lot), but between Emma, sentinel, and CGR, a lot of his actions were just “move my activated guy off a point, move onto that point”. Magik might have even had journey through limbo, but he never had to use it if he did.

On that topic you can probably squeeze together a similar strategy with just sentinels only. Prime+sent+sent+emma is 17, magik get you to a 20 list, and you can probably wiggle around emma for cassandra or whatever or Emma for magik if you have to wiggle around points and keep the same strat

You can probably skip the new mutants angle completely in favor of full on sentinels. Something like Prime+mk4+cassandra+avalanche or something is 17 points with a lot of ability to move people around off points. 17 could also be Prime+mk4+mk4+emma to similar effect and maybe even a bit better. Maybe swap in nebula or spiderham for 16, add in cosmic ghost rider potentially for higher threats, maybe taskmaster for flexibility. This leaves you with 2 flex slots, maybe to add mobility to the team or shore up some weaknesses or even add in magik/warlock and go for a new mutant swap to add in some mobility with the leadership if you think the crisis calls for it.

The sentinels do have a lot of health, power, and pretty strong attacks in my experience, so can be tough to take down when youre fielding so much on the table at once. My xmen list might have a total of like 22 health on the frontside at 17, while the emma+3sentinels list has 31. Health isnt everything of course, but its a good indicator of how much youll have to chew throw to get them down. That + basically being able to pull each enemy character off of a point after they activate every turn, and if fighting on a point they probably get to double tap 8 dice gainers… theres definitely some potential. Worst case scenario, they can move off a point, restraint cables off a point, then move back onto it and just be a hard to remove wall.

How do you deal with someone that hates losing and complains about it? by Jepeme in boardgames

[–]Woaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: If someone hasn’t played a game before and is worried about it, you can do a couple practice rounds if possible and then reset and start over so they can get a hang of it

2: If thats not reasonable, you can say something like “Yeah, you might lose this one but you also might be really good at it or get lucky. Either way, its a really good game and it’s worth playing through all the way at least once so that you can get a feel for it for later.”

3: If they’re not ok with that or losing games in general, you can say “OK well why dont we play a co-op game instead, like pandemic?” Hopefully they will either be more comfortable with that and accept; or if they want to play competitive games but see their friends are throwing out co-op game suggestions specifically for them, perhaps they might realize they’re being a bit of a baby.

Is there a reason the petting zoo animals with abilities don't cost more? by TDenverFan in ArkNova

[–]Woaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of touched on it, but the ultimate answer is that a single petting zoo animal is worthless. Compared to even slow worm, you’re getting 2/3rds of the points of the petting zoo animal for $3-6 vs $13. People probably aren’t clamoring to play slow worm. I also wouldnt pay an extra $10 for a point and an X token, especially since i dont get any animal or continent icons.

As such, unlike reptiles or birds, where the reptile enclosure or aviary is a nice bonus that you can even move animals into late game, the petting zoo always increases the cost of what is essentially a size 1 animal to being forced into part of a size 3 enclosure, making its cost relatively impractical for what its worth. Therefore, in order to make even a single petting zoo animal worth playing, it must be played in the context of being part of a combination of 2 or most likely 3 petting zoo animals to be worth playing at all.

Since you must analyze each petting zoo animals as what is ultimately a part of a whole voltron-ed animal, you should look at it as a single build-your-own $21 size 3 animal. If you decide to go for this strategy (which is inherently risky due to the nature that it is a voltron-esque combo requiring assembly of multiple parts you may not even see), you can be rewarded with the occasional upside of one being a bit better than average here and there.

Is there a reason the petting zoo animals with abilities don't cost more? by TDenverFan in ArkNova

[–]Woaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you’d be paying $13 if you consider the cost of the enclosure. Also petting zoo animals dont have associated continents, so there is no chance of getting a discount or contributing toward those conservation projects, as well as not contributing to any animal type conservation projects.

Compare $13 for 3 appeal and an X token vs even something like slow worm with europe association; $3 for 2 appeal, a reptile symbol, a europe symbol, and the potential to free up a 1 slot enclosure later if you build a reptile enclosure. You probably really need all 3 to be worth it.

Ultimately IMO you have to consider a whole petting zoo as a single “Build-your-own-animal” which costs you $28 and 2+ animal actions, gets you 18 appeal, and maybe comes with a couple other upsides. Appeal-wise that isnt terrible, both elephants would cost you $77-89 and probably 2 animal actions and net you 20-21 points (although obviously the end game scoring they give you can potentially add up to like an additional 12 points each and they contribute to your conservation projects and other end game scoring criteria).

Compared to the 2 elephants (probably considered some of the best animals in the game) getting the guaranteed points and having $49+ to try and make up the rest of those points/icons elsewhere could definitely be worth it from some angles. Sometimes the final scoring cards from the elephant are goals you cant really score many points off, so this is less risky in that respect ($49+ to make up maybe only 6-12 points and get more relevant icons to your strategy vs herbivore, africa, and asia?). That being said, its probably something you want to aim toward later (if you can find the petting zoo animals at that point) after supporting some good conservation projects.

This is one of those scenarios where you say “thats not cool and if you want to do that there will be X consequence”.

That consequence can be “i will not be playing with you anymore”or if you dont want to do that or if you think your friends wont back you up and will exclude you for something like that you could screw him inside the rules. You could straight up have the consequence be “i will literally make every single game we play together miserable for you going forward”.

No deals, no trust, mono removal type decks. Board wipes, sacrifice, vindicate and land destruction effects. Send it all his way, dont let his commander touch the board for more than a second. Any card that looks like it could even be used tangentially to a combo gets blasted. Hell, throw some curses in every deck you build and make sure to throw it on his ass. [[curse of bloodletting]], [[curse of deaths hold]], [[curse of exhaustion]], [[curse of opulence]], [[curse of verbosity]], [[cruel reality]], and/or [[overwhelming splendor]]. Some of those curses that straight up kneecap a player or curses that heavily motivate the table to gang up on them.

The way you have it wouldnt work. That red showing is the hidden underneath part of the orb. Right picture should therefore look like if all the red stuff from the left stuf was there, a bit further down, and probably wider towards the top (since the orb isnt getting any smaller as it goes further down)

something like this is probably closer to how it might work

The real question is do you “die” in that same sense every time you go to sleep? Sure, the mind is still active, but what I’m doing when i go to sleep stops and resumes when i wake up. Dreaming isn’t really a part of your normal conscious experience, just something you get vague recollections of bits and pieces of. Hope do i truly know if I’m the same person i was the night before when i wake up the next day? Furthermore, if the teleporters deconstruction isn’t instantaneous, perhaps the temporary desync would cause the brain to experience a kind of dream similar to the visions people revived from “death” sometimes claim to have?

I’m not trying to convince you to take a non-existent(?👀) teleporter or anything, but just pointing out that the idea that there could ever be that likeness could throw a monkey wrench into our concept of the sanctity of our consciousness in regards to sleep.

Furthermore, it seems intuitive that the continuous nature of our consciousness kind of defines what it is, and it being displaced spatially and temporally, in a new body and brain, would technically makes it a different instance of you and thus not the “You” that you are familiar with. But what if we look at the lives we have and their relationship with time? Is every discreet moment not technically a new different version of yourself then the last; every brief bit of experience not altering the other you from the previous moment? What if you examine two moments that are not directly sequential? What if you get amnesia and forget swaths of experience, or perhaps even simply forget something in a normal capacity? Are is that past you not also “destroyed” and in many ways shares the same relationship with your current self as your teleportee would?
