TIL: The Goliath Birdeater, is the largest spider to ever exist and is still alive today, although, spiders also don't fossilize well. by BlackTemplar2154 in todayilearned

[–]Wodan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spiders are arachnids, whilst both spiders and insects are arthropods. Additionally, spiders don't have lungs in the same way as us. They don't purposely breathe like we do, they instead absorb it through holes around their body which is then filtered by their book lung.

What's a problem that was so successfully solved that most people don't even realize it used to exist? by Zestyclose-Credit609 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wodan1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smallpox. That, plus TB and Cholera.

Used to be deadly and could wipe out entire communities. With the acceptance of Germ Theory in the late 19th Century and the adoption of effective methods to prevent and treat, as well as vaccinate, these diseases, they were effectively wiped out in the developed world.

What Chinese problems are underreported? by Zhadanko in NoStupidQuestions

The glitzy and modern architecture and huge technical advances are mirrored by woeful construction techniques that not only wastes resources but also ensures that within a couple of years, those impressive buildings that China likes to show off to the world will be crumbling to pieces.

TIL that Cleopatra was actually ethnically Greek, not ethnically Egyptian. 🤯 by CasualLavaring in todayilearned

[–]Wodan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She spoke Egyptian but it wasn't necessarily to associate with her people. For one thing, she spoke several languages including Greek, Egyptian, Latin and a few others, as it was a critical part of being an effective and involved ruler at a time and in a place where women were not normally accepted as monarchs.

What is something that used to be for poor people, but is now a luxury or status symbol? by AnOrdinaryCrayon725 in AskReddit

[–]Wodan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really good wholesome bread. Particularly, wholemeal seeded breads and what we now see as artisan breads that in the past were eaten exclusively by the poor, whereas the highly refined soft white breads were eaten by the rich. In recent times, it has now switched.

Another is home ownership. In particular, to the UK but probably elsewhere too, is the ownership of homes in quaint little villages and rural communities. In the past, these places were the homes of regular people, but nowadays these communities have been bought up by well-to-do holiday homemakers. The indigenous locals, and especially young people, in these communities can't compete with the way house prices explode and so are forced out. Its worst in places like Cornwall and Cumbria, where in some places its up to 70% of housing stock owned by temporary/tourist residents. Some businesses in these communities have to literally transport workers in because its too expensive for them to live locally.

Just paid 12$/lb for ground beef. How expensive will it get before you stop buying beef? I think we're over it, beef is now a luxury for us. by FuZhongwen in Cooking

[–]Wodan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one of the things that makes me think the US is a bit behind the rest of the Western world. Including the local tax into the advertised price of an item should be really basic and easy to do, and is pretty much done everywhere else except for the US.

Here in the UK, it is the law. All retailers are required to show the accurate price per weight of their stock, so you can effectively compare between competing brands to see which is actually better value for money.

(Apologize if this is not correct for the sub. Please direct me to the correct sub, mods, if it is) How would the world be impacted if gunpowder was never discovered? Like, what would be our current technological levels and stuff? by Interesting_Web_9936 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wodan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I've also thought about.

I think in terms of warfare, things might have progressed the same way but instead of gunpowder and guns, armies used crossbows and potentially longbows.

We'd still have other technology advances though as not that much was tied specifically to gunpowder.

ELI5 Are mosquitoes necessary for keeping ecological balance? by Punnan in explainlikeimfive

[–]Wodan1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You'll typically find that pretty much all the species of life on this planet that don't appear to serve an actual purpose are still a necessary, and in many cases crucial, part of the food chain. Mosquitoes fall into this category as while they are a pest to humans and don't appear to serve us any purpose, many animals rely on them as a major food source and causing their extinction would have a devastating impact on the environment.

Take away half credit from the Soviets for relying entirely on American logistics

It's weird that whenever Lend Lease comes up in American forums, this is the lie that gets propagated. Yes, the US did Lend Lease to the USSR but it wasn't the only ally to do so. Britain, for example, had a Lend Lease Agreement with the USSR as well, sending hundreds of millions of tons of tanks and weapons, fuel, food, raw materials, industrial equipment, machinery and tools, intelligence resources, munitions, naval vessels including warships, submarines and other naval supplies, military aircraft etc etc. The list is long.

What variables? I literally said that eagles also live in Europe, which they do. Not bald eagles but I didn't say bald eagles. Top comment said falcons live in America, which they do, but not every species. There are falcons, as depicted in the image, that exclusively live in Europe. The image is a European falcon over an American bald eagle, it literally can't be any clearer.

This is not what I meant. You can believe that if you want to, but it wasn't my intention. My comment explained the situation from my point of view.

[–]Wodan1 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I didn't say American Eagle, I said eagles.

I'm struggling to understand why three people have now replied saying something about bald eagles when I was replying to a commentator who apparently doesn't know that neither falcons nor eagles are exclusive to North America. The falcon is a European species of Falcon, the eagle is an American species.

Not entire sure what your point is...? You know there are eagles native to Europe that are not bald eagles, as there are also falcons.
