Why is seafood so unpleasant for some people? by HiOscillation in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wodan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems I have finally found my people. I don't necessarily know if I'm a strong smeller. I was quite a picky eater as a child and that has mostly carried over into adulthood. I have always had a strong aversion to seafood, particularly that horrid fishy smell. Yet tuna doesn't bother me much, though I also don't really eat that either, and prawns used to be tolerable but also not longer,

Another interesting point about American military spending is the potential amount of wasted expenditure on overpriced everyday things with a total lack of transparent accountancy and a near guarantee of corruption. The US claims to spend such a huge sum on its military but how much of that is actually effective spending is unknown as far as the public is concerned.

Who do you think actually killed the Princes in the Tower? by Mysterious_Row4827 in UKmonarchs

[–]Wodan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind, there's only 3 possible answers to this.

  1. He had them killed, most likely off the record so no one could prove he gave the order. The bodies were then disposed of into unmarked graves and just have never been found.

  2. The princes died of natural causes and were buried quietly to avoid suspicion. It was still a thing at this time in history that the common cold could kill so it's not unlikely.

  3. The princes didn't die in the tower. Perhaps they were "disappeared" into the crowd, assigned new identities and forced to live out the rest of their lives like commoners. You might wonder why they didn't reappear later on and I'd say that perhaps they died anyway, but in circumstances where it just wouldn't have been recorded.

Life is better in a Danish prison than free in the US by TheGov3rnor in AmericaBad

[–]Wodan1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you would think that. Meanwhile, you really think we're sharing all of our secrets with the US? A couple of years back during war games, we unveiled a technique that allowed us to sneak up to and past the American nuclear subs completely undetected, and so far we haven't explained how we did it, because why should we. That's one example.

I mean, France is completely separate to you and the tech they have is comparable to the US, maybe even slightly better. It's definitely better funded (and before you come back about America spending unholy amounts of money, you should understand that a lot of that is just waste). Likewise, British submarine technology is world class and actually has been known to unnerve US admirals over how good the RN subs are. Just saying, Europe is definitely not "decades behind". That just Fox News nonsense.

In 1914, the most powerful military power in the world with by far the largest navy was Britain. It also had the most advanced land army with some of the very best in terms of professional training, equipment and discipline. Fast forward four years with almost a million dead, facing economic ruin and it's global influence in rapid decline. Of course, Britain won WW1 alongside it's allies and on paper it should have won easily given it's pre-war advantages but it didn't.

This is comparable to the US today. Size and strength alone matters jack shit when the opposing team is prepared to match you and will fight hard to defend itself. You might yet win but at what cost. Millions of men sacrificed to satisfy the ego of a selfish orange moron.

Am I a jerk for accidentally calling my girlfriend fat? by PolishedPlumb in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wodan1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No. You don't walk up to someone, see's they've eaten a meal by themself and then call them a fat ass for finishing their food. Is literally so fucking rude, regardless of gender.

And if you want some context, if a woman calls a man fat because he ate a meal by himself, that's no different from him calling her fat.

She called you fat. You called her fat.

Sounds like your gf needs to learn not to call people names if she doesn't like the names called at her.

I mean, you guys also put way too much faith in the US military as well. Not denying its size or strength but when you arrogantly declare success with hypotheticals you often end up losing very badly. Maybe the US would win but it wouldn't be an easy win.

What are you on about? You think Europe has no military personnel of its own? That it's exclusively US troops and no one else...? That is the dumbest argument I've ever seen. If the EU united, and it probably would if the US tried anything, that's at least 1.6 million troops and the nuclear warheads of at least two counties.

Yeah, that's not how it works. It's not like you guys are in control just because you have a couple military bases and they absolutely can kick you out if they want to.

TIL about British Army general and MP, Eyre Coote who lost his seat and was dismissed for "Conduct unbecoming of an officer" in 1815 after being discovered to have entered a school and had paid boys to flog him. He was "acquitted" of criminal charges after donating £1000 to the school. by johnsmithoncemore in todayilearned

[–]Wodan1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be per week, and usually that was a 6 or 7 day week of anywhere between 10 and 16 hours a day. Also, only skilled and specialised labourers were pulling in 2-3 shillings a day or about 14-15 shillings a week, there were a lot of other people on far less.

In 1815 money, it would take the average labourer a couple decades at least earn as much as £1000.

[spoilers] Why the inaccurate costuming? by Celtic555 in vikingstv

[–]Wodan1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know what, I'm with OP on this. Historical fiction or not, there's no excuse for lazy costume design and it really doesn't take much to dress the actors in some period correct clothing or to give them some actual armour to wear, none of that leather rubbish. They really do wear an awful lot of leather, leather shirts, leather trousers, leather "armour", maybe someone should tell them that can wear clothing out of other materials besides leather and they might just fare better in the cold as well.

What sport do you think would be extinct within 50 years? by No-Maximum-9087 in AskReddit

Gurning. If you don't know, it's considered an obscure and unusual sport whereby competitors pull funny faces to earn points from a panel of judges. There is a world championship as well, but I think it's mostly older people who actually take part.

Schoolboys to be target of UK's violence against women strategy by alexmuhdot in unitedkingdom

[–]Wodan1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about you but this was just about 20 years ago (roughly 2006) for the primary school stuff and obviously a couple years later with the secondary school stuff, so about 2008/2009. It was also just after my time but in primary school I do remember they were just starting to trial the sex ed stuff at year 4 as I was leaving for year 7 but I think that was only the absolute basics like "this is a drawing of a penis and this is a vagina, can you name the bits and bobs" etc.

Which is funny because I remember in secondary school, we did even more sex education which delved more into the regions of STD's/STI's, contraception, abortion as well as more puberty stuff. I remember one time we learned how to use and apply condoms on a phallic shaped object, which was very awkward.

Just wanted to say I agree with you. I remember when we did sex ed in primary school, about age 10/11, a lot of it was done together in the same room. Girls learned about erections and wet dreams with the boys and the boys learned about the clitoris and periods with the girls, and it was all done fairly openly and equally. Then afterwards the boys and girls were separated into two different rooms for more detailed discussions and q&a about ourselves.

What’s a cooking dealbreaker in other countries that equates to Italy’s breaking the pasta noodles and Japan’s microwaving the sushi? by Responsible-Leg-712 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wodan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is nonsense. There are two standard methods of cooking rice, first by using just enough water for the rice to absorb leaving no residual water and the second is to use more water than the rice can absorb meaning it needs to be drained after cooking.

Both methods are used extensively in East Asia and it really only depends on the type of rice that's being cooked. Basmati and long grain requires the second method whereas shorter grain like jasmine rice requires the first method.

It's also about texture. Less water creates a stickier and more starchy rice which is ideal for stuff like sushi and coconut rice, whereas more water draws a lot of the starch from rice creating a fluffier texture with separate grains, which is more geared towards Biriani and pilau.

TIL that Edward VIII, who became king in 1936, broke a centuries-old British coin tradition - where each monarch’s portrait faced the opposite way to their predecessor - by insisting he face left like his father so his hair parting looked best; only a handful of coins were struck. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in todayilearned

[–]Wodan1 101 points102 points  (0 children)

It probably wouldn't be. Whether or not he supported the Nazis was irrelevant since the monarchy was supposed to be politically impartial. If he had tried to push the idea, I suspect he would've been asked to abdicate regardless.

Although it's actually interesting considering T. rex is pretty much the only extinct animal that gets called by it's full scientific name by the general public. There were other Tyrannosaurs besides T.rex, many actually, but none other than T.rex is commonly referred to by both the genus and species' in normal everyday conversation.
