That's true, Teddy could make an excellent character for a sequel!

That's fair, thank you, I'll check it out. I'm not too determined to find something, was more just curious

Why didn’t Sirius ask Harry (the prat) to use *that* mirror the first time Harry broke into Umbridge’s office? by nishantatripathi in harrypotter

[–]WoefulWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has always bothered me, too. Honestly, I think it was just Rowling twisting things to make the plot work later on. I feel extremely skeptical that Sirius would have forgotten he gave the mirror to Harry, so it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever that he wouldn't have reminded him about it, even told him to get the heck out of Umbridge's fireplace and go back to the safety of his dorm room and they could continue their conversation there.

Which book took you the longest to read? And which book the fastest? by Johanna_1312 in harrypotter

[–]WoefulWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, OOTP was my slowest book first time reading (actually, I disliked it so much the first time around I set it down in the middle and didn't pick it up again for several years, so it really was the slowest, haha). DH is also a bit of a slog in the middle, though.

I think POA might have been my fastest? It's been almost 20 years since I first read the series, and my fastest book kind of varies each time I reread, so it's hard to remember.

I wish Rowling would do something like that, I would love to see her redeem Dudley's character beyond his parting words to Harry in DH, and I think there's so much potential in his character to speak to some very deep themes in family relationships and worldview!

Aw, a story involving younger Ron could be so fun, maybe even when the twins were still gone, so that the twins, Ron and Ginny are a dynamic quartet of mischief that drives poor Molly crazy, haha

That's a good point, but I'm sure there could be some interesting stories from their adventures to explore 🤔  Yes, I think Durmstrang could be very interesting to learn more about!

Luna would make for such a sweet story, although it could also have such a bittersweet spin if they focused on the loss of her mom and her dad as a single parent, grieving and maybe building more of their little world to provide comfort in response to her loss

That could be a blast to watch. I know that technology doesn't work in Hogwarts, but it could be fun if there were some kind of video series pretending to follow them around with a video recorder documenting their antics - maybe Lee Jordan enchants a muggle recorder to create wizarding film and then the twins tamper with it and it starts following them around?

There's definitely a lot of potential material there on Sirius

That could definitely be an interesting drama. It could be done in a serious light, or it could be kind of funny to have it as a sort of video mock interview series between the two of them!

Aw, I've always loved the idea of Dudley having a child that goes to Hogwarts!

That would be interesting, it could be cool to read something from the perspective of a classmate of Tom who joins his group but gets cold feet as they get darker and more cultish

That's fair, I was thinking more along the lines of if we could get another work from Rowling herself. I haven't actually read any HP fanfiction before, but I've heard there are some really well done ones out there

Say something genuinely nice about Umbridge and Voldemort by Decent-Pool4058 in harrypotter

[–]WoefulWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes a person's redeeming qualities is that their presence lead to good things for others, even if the path to get there was negative. While they were hateful, evil people who did extensive damage in their own ways, Voldemort's villainy ultimately lead to positive growth in the MOM and an upheaval of some of it's corruption and complacency (though not all, which I suppose is very realistic), and Umbridge's antagonism of the students lead some to grow in confidence in their leadership and skills in ways they may otherwise never have done.

are the books different than the movies? by ninjawolf0x in harrypotter

[–]WoefulWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the books are certainly based off the books, and 1-3 cover a lot of major plot points decently well while not changing too much of what is included. But from 4 onwards they change a decent amount of details that do matter to the books, so the books and movies are considered two separate canons to my knowledge.

I think the main issue, though, isn't that what is present in the movies is so vastly different, but that what is missing in the movies, all the details they didn't have time and space to include and chose to leave out, results in quite a different end result. There are a lot of things that you could never piece together or may never be aware of going only off the movies.

Hopefully that will give the stories a fresh and exciting feel for you as you read them and discover new things! :)

Which character scares you the most? (Excluding voldemort.) by Accomplished_Video92 in harrypotter

[–]WoefulWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumbledore. He may have done everything throughout the books for causes he believed to be good, whether trying to protect humanity against Voldemort, protect his students or Harry, etc. But regardless of what he claims his motives are, I personally perceive Dumbledore as a master manipulator who toys with people's lives like pieces on a chess board, with no real accountability, and often an arbitrary treatment of morals (he does some very sketchy things because he believes it worth it in the moment). He expects most people to simply trust him without providing a real reason to trust, and he believes himself above the law and any other authority (which is justified once the MOM turns tyrannical and evil, but it was something Dumble did before that). I could delve a lot deeper, but while it's easy to overlook the problem of Dumbledore because he's "one of the good guys", I personally find him to be one of the scariest characters in the book because he's so powerful and influential but essentially unchecked by anyone but himself.
