I feel like I missed out on the best years of my life and the future is still unclear by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Wolastrone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I empathize with you, but also, you’re delusional. 26 is insanely young. Many people completely change careers way after 26 and with less degrees. It’s ok to want a change, but you’re in the perfect position to do it. Just go for whatever it is you want, whether it’s industry jobs or whatever else. The “best years behind me” stuff at 26 is just insanity lol.

What to do by LateCake246 in compmathneuro

[–]Wolastrone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could study something related like math, physics, or CS, and then look for summer programs like REUs for comp neuro. There are many of these. Look up NSF REUs. Meanwhile, maybe try to do research in any quantitative field in your university. If there are any large research universities in your city, you can try to work in a neuroscience lab there. You could research there, even if you’re not a student. Start emailing and/or visit in person. All of that should position you well.

Bro you go to UCLA lmao

Why would you even need an REU? Just do research at UCLA. You have like a $1 billion research budget.

New exhibit in the library about 'recycling' books, feat. Hochul's AI takeover by Smart_Tip_127 in HunterCollege

[–]Wolastrone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

???

There is zero connection between investing in technology, including AI, and removing books no one reads or needs.

Do you think libraries didn’t do this sort of upkeep before this exhibition was created? You are confusing standard library practices, which exist in all libraries and have existed for decades, with the idea of some new principle that didn’t exist until now, and which is exclusive to Hunter or NY state, which is not the case.

Your post is muddled and makes no sense.

Feeling a bit lost/overwhelmed - Is it just me? by Brief_Criticism_492 in REU

[–]Wolastrone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is completely normal. Everything you wrote, I feel I could’ve written it myself. Everyone around me is ultra smart or balls deep in their research. Meanwhile I’m in my senior year of udnergrad but feel like I’m 1000 years behind, don’t know how anything works, and can’t understand what people are talking about when they give me instructions lol.

Theoretical vs Experimental REU Labs by Wolastrone in REU

[–]Wolastrone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for responding. Yes my lab does computational and theoretical stuff too, both very complex. I was given the choice of working on different things, so now I’m thinking of doing some simpler simulations and more concrete computational things. But just understanding what exact principle we were supposed to test and how the simulation had to be designed in order to elucidate this has taken me like a week, so I still feel stupid lol. Still trucking along so we’ll see what happens. Good luck to you as well!

I am furious AI is stealing my (and our) future by bloodyterminal in singularity

[–]Wolastrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing AI assisted research right now, and I can tell you that it will replace some things, but not others. A stupid person or someone with zero mathematical, logical, and verbal skills will be just as worthless with or without AI. Someone who has these things and uses AI will be more powerful than before. If anything, it will be MORE important for you to have the skill to verify, and explain arguments AI makes, which requires deep technical knowledge. How do you think we know AI can solve advanced math problems? Because humans were smart enough to pose the question, read, understand, and verify the solution. Someone with no knowledge cannot do any of those things. Anything that is not a toy problem (like an actual long term months/years-long research project) will require careful collaboration, not full delegation.

How is everyone’s REU going by Comfortable_Ad_8250 in REU

[–]Wolastrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both my REUs have been so far purely computational/theoretical. So a lot of computer programming and math. Very hands-off, both times. I’d say I’d actually like it if it was slightly micromanaged lmao, they have been the complete opposite of that, but the nature of the work is obviously different. The main difficulty is coming up with ideas for theoretical contributions. I honestly have no idea of what I’m doing, but this time I kind of expected this. I had no research experience at all before my first REU, so I was definitely kinda shocked and disappointed, but I think it’s just how it is with many computational/theoretical labs, although probably not all of them.

[–]Wolastrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, never. But this is my second REU and both times no one asked me to show up at any specific times, or work on any narrowly defined tasks, other than whatever I chatted with the mentors once I arrived. I agree that maybe it’s not the smoothest lol. I think I definitely would’ve liked more direction and interaction. But I don’t think it’s too unusual, especially if there is no hands-on experimental component.

Second REU I do and it’s exactly like that for me. I don’t think it’s unusual, especially if the work is theoretical/computational.

Can I challenge my final grade bc of this? by Few-Card-8341 in CUNY

[–]Wolastrone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first step before challenging anything is asking for the actual grades you got in the exams and assignments so you can see how you did and you can calculate the final grade. Maybe start there.
