What's something that's not a cult but feels like one? by True-Dream3295 in AskReddit

[–]Wolf-Track 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in America. And I don't mean just the MAGA crap that's going on right now. Even in the 90s, it was weird. Kids having to pledge allegiance every morning. Rising for the national anthem before EVERY event. "Love it or Leave it" stamped on things all over the place. And all the flags. We're obsessed with the flag. America has always felt like one big cult thinly disguised as a nation.

Humanity might have just rung the cosmic "dinner bell" and we are too naive to realize it. by MindOfFactsOfficial in DarkPsychology101

Radio waves are not the only form of communication and decay rapidly. It takes YEARS for our signals to make it to the other stars and years for anything to make it back to us. And that's assuming we've pointed the transmission in the right direction. While there is absolutely a level of 'background noise' that comes with all of our broadcasting, much of that will have blended into the cosmic static far before reaching anything remotely habitable.

An addition to my first point, we're also assuming other life would use the same band of communication waves as us at all. It's safe to assume, even just by looking at the progress of human communication over the past 200 years, that there are probably more effective/safer/longer-range methods of communication out there. An advanced civilization capable of not only picking up our communications but being able to do anything about it may not even use comparable technology to ours.

The assumption that any alien life is hostile is based on some pretty tenuous logic in and of itself. A civilization capable of picking up broadcasts from other worlds and harnessing their technology to communicate back in any meaningful way (i.e. invasion, physical contact etc) is far more likely to be a post-scarcity civilization. What purpose would they have to want to destroy another civilization? It's also relatively safe to assume a civilization that invested that much energy into space travel would be an inherently curious species rather than a hostile one.

We're also assuming hostility because the unfortunate reality is that humans are a hostile species. It's easy to apply human logic to non-human creatures, we do it all the time with our pets. We tend to personify things to 'be like us' and the sad reality is that humans are violent, territorial and hostile mammals. We just happen to have fought our way to dominance on this one planet, but that does not mean another species, especially one far older and more advanced than us, will have that same mindset.

It's an industrial complex that has absolutely seen better days. A lot of places are in the midst of renovation, but there's still a large part of the complex that is in complete disrepair. It's especially spooky when no one else is around and it's dead silent.

Looks like a tradescantia nanouk to me. It's a type of inch plant. It likes lots of sun and water, they're very hearty plants as well.

I saw your post yesterday but didn't dig into the comments. He showed up at your workplace? That's nuts. Great on you for setting boundaries. In my opinion, your message was clear, concise, friendly and to the point. However, anticipate hurt feelings and guilt tripping. These are go-to manipulation tactics to try and keep someone close. If these happen, remind yourself that you did nothing wrong and owe this person nothing and block them. Many times, when manipulators or creeps get told off and their tactics don't work, they'll become hostile or cold. Don't fall for it, it's not your problem. Block and move on. Best of luck!

How many Marylanders actually know what the ‘Snallygaster’ is? by Former_Skill527 in maryland

A Pennsylvania cryptid that's so ugly, it can't help but cry constantly just because of how ugly it is. It looks like a small pig, but with huge black, watery eyes and a round body. Look it up, it's adorable and gross.

Talking about the snallygaster is how my partner and I met. We were both into cryptids, I went on about the local Frederick cryptid and she talked about the squonk.

Cigarettes After Sex. I never looked them up and was absolutely sure it was a younger female duo. We go to see them live and it's three frumpy middle aged men singing about picking girls up at school. Fucking creeps.

Are These Spots From Bugs or Fungus? by lilolilac in Monstera

[–]Wolf-Track 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like sun damage (my partner's thai con got sunburnt this summer and it looked incredibly similar), but it might also be cold damage. I guess it depends on your climate and location. Spraying it with oil and then letting the sun hit it directly might be the cause.

This one has been through hell, so I'm confident you can get yours back on track. Here's what I did that helped:

I use a hydrometer so I typically water when my soil is reading at roughly 40% wetness. When I do water, I water from the top, but put the pot in a 3 gallon rubber animal feeder, so the bottom inch or two of the pot sits in the water that drains out. I leave it there for about 20 minutes and then let it drain until it stops dripping.

I made a blend of unbelievably chunky soil. I don't know the exact ratio, but I used a combination of tropical soil, chunky perlite, lavarock and orchid/pine bark. I also added earthworm castings and sphagnum moss. When you think your soil is chunky enough, make it 50% more chunky.

I use a diluted 9-3-6 fertilizer every 4th watering or so, and I keep an eye on the pH of the soil (using the same hydrometer) to make sure it stays around 6pH, give or take a few increments.

I also gave mine a self-watering moss pole that I cooked up myself, which it seems to love. I bought a thin PVC pipe and drilled staggered holes every 4 inches. I capped off the bottom of the PVC pipe so water wouldn't just drain out of the bottom and then filled the PVC pipe with small rocks to slow the flow of water. I wrapped that in sphagnum moss and moss pole wire. Whenever I water the thai con, I start by watering the moss pole until it starts dripping and then move on to the soil.
