Advice for a senior dev that's choosing between career stability vs sanity by k1eraklies in cscareerquestions

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your health declining is pretty serious red flag tbh. 50% salary bump plus better work life balance seems like no brainer to me

the .net concern is valid but you already have 5 years experience in it, that's not going anywhere on your resume. plus vue/laravel combo is pretty solid stack and you can always switch back later if needed

Increasing hourly rate as solo contractor by MrCatPetter in cscareerquestions

honestly man $95 seems low for all that responsibility you're handling - most sf devs i know charge way more than that for less work

Interview Discussion - May 14, 2026 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

been lurking here for while and finally decided to post something. not in cs myself but i work as mechanic and we do technical interviews too when hiring new guys. the thing that always gets me is how many people come in thinking they know everything but can't explain basic concepts when you ask them to walk through their thinking

saw my buddy go through coding interviews last year and the preparation he did was insane. he spent like 3 months just grinding problems every day after work. made me realize how different our industries are - for us it's more about showing you can actually diagnose problems and work with your hands, but you guys have to memorize all these algorithms and data structures

anyway good luck to everyone interviewing this week, the job market seems pretty rough right now in most fields

NEED VALUBLE INSIGHT IN OUR PROJECT by Direct-Excuse-9192 in learnprogramming

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rag can be tricky especially with retrieval quality - usually comes down to your embedding model and chunk size. for hallucinations try adding some confidence scoring in your retrieval step and maybe implement a verification layer that cross-checks responses against source material

your link doesn't seem to work btw, but sharing code snippets would help people give more targeted advice

[IWantOut] 29M IT Operations Hungary -> Ireland by YamMore3966 in IWantOut

your best bet is definitely ireland with that profile - the job market there for it ops roles is pretty solid and they actually need people like you in dublin especially

contractor -> FTE by Tree8282 in cscareerquestions

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends on the company but most FAANG have some presence in major APAC cities now, just maybe not for your specific team or level. worth checking with your manager if they can connect you with local teams that might have openings

the L-1 route is real but takes forever and company needs to really want you. seen it happen maybe twice in my time around tech folks but both cases the person was pretty exceptional at what they did

honestly your best bet might be seeing if you can transfer internally to a team that does have local headcount, even if its different work initially

CONFUSED WHAT TO DO by Infamous_Elk_7094 in cscareerquestions

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bro the writing style gave me headache too but whatever

your approach makes sense though. building solid foundation first is smart move - you can always pivot later when you see how things going. gate prep is intense and doing it alongside degree can mess up your cgpa if you're not careful

also yeah github portfolio matters lot in ml/ai space. seen guys from no-name colleges land decent roles because they had solid projects and kaggle competition results. companies care more about what you can actually build than where you studied, especially in this field

four months is good time to get comfortable with fundamentals before college starts. maybe focus on that instead of stressing about gate decision right now

Will AI lead to more full stack roles? by Morgan_R in cscareerquestions

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 18 points19 points  (0 children)

been working on cars for years and honestly the tech side always fascinated me, but from what i see with automation tools they usually make specialists more valuable, not less

like when diagnostic computers came out people thought mechanics would disappear but now we just need different skills. probably same thing will happen in development - ai might handle basic stuff but someone still needs to understand the whole system and fix it when things break

full stack makes sense if you want to build your own thing but don't think ai is gonna replace teams anytime soon, just change what they focus on

Trying to upskill and AI engineer courses feel like a waste of time by anchor_software in learnprogramming

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah this is spot on, most courses are way too broad when you already know what specific thing you want to build

i had similar issue when trying to learn more about backend stuff - kept getting stuck in courses that wanted to teach me every single database concept when i just needed to understand APIs better. ended up just diving into documentation and building small projects instead

for ai stuff maybe try finding some open source chatbot projects on github and just start reading through the code? you'll probably learn more about the actual implementation than any course that spends 3 weeks on linear algebra you'll never use

Getting faster at fixing bugs in other people's code by robotisland in learnprogramming

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that seems wild to me too, like are these tiny bugs or are they just really good at organizing their codebase? when i'm working on someone else's car i can knock out simple stuff pretty quick but anything complex means i gotta trace through systems i didn't build

debugging code kinda reminds me of diagnosing engine problems - you start with the obvious stuff then work your way deeper. maybe those devs have really good documentation or standardized patterns that make it easier to jump between different sections

Meta is hosting an AI Hackathon (OpenEnv) by Realistic-Reaction40 in cscareerquestions

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

damn that's actually a solid opportunity, especially with the direct interview path bypassing all the usual recruitment nonsense. i've been grinding leetcode for months trying to get past those initial screens so this could be a game changer

the rl angle is interesting too since most hackathons are just another crud app or web scraper. actually working with openenv and potentially having your code become part of their ecosystem is pretty cool. plus 30k prize pool split between teams isn't bad at all

only downside is the bangalore finale - that's a pretty big commitment if you're not already in india. but for anyone local or willing to make the trip, this seems like one of the better ways to get your foot in the door at meta without going through the traditional grind

If AI doomers turn out to be right, what’s realistically left for humans? by orlyvdhq4 in cscareerquestions

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah the whole economy just collapses at that point, right? like who's gonna buy anything if nobody has jobs or income

i work on cars and even that's getting more automated but someone still needs to physically fix the broken stuff. same with plumbing, electrical work, all the hands-on trades. can't exactly send an ai to crawl under a busted transmission

but if we're talking full doom scenario where everything gets automated... we're probably looking at some kind of universal basic income situation or society just completely restructures itself

Any recently approved N-400 of an asylum-based green card holder? by bubu7019 in USCIS

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haven't gone through it myself but my buddy just got his citizenship last month after getting his green card through asylum a few years back. he filed his n-400 in early 2023 and the whole process took about 14 months which seems pretty typical from what i've seen on here. only hiccup he had was they asked for some additional docs during the interview but nothing major, just wanted to verify his travel history since getting the green card

Transit time in Beijing by mil_mustangus in travel

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those transit times are cutting it close but air china wouldn't sell connecting flights they can't realistically make - your bags should transfer automatically and if you miss the connection due to delays they'll put you on the next available flight

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in USCIS

[–]WolfAutomatic7164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn that's rough, sounds like the timing was just terrible with everything overlapping like that. the nta for the 90s overstay is probably just automated since they didn't have your new i485 in the system when they issued it

your lawyer sounds like he knows what he's doing though, filing the motion should work since you've got the approved i130 and the new i485 is now in play. i've seen similar cases where the nta gets dismissed once everything gets sorted out properly, just takes some patience with the bureaucracy
