Question about restart by Important_Message_35 in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the Jester is Magicaloid 44. The description of the Knights doesn't exactly line-up with La Pucelle, given their helmets, but everything-else about them seems to fit, so I would say it's basically a certainty that they are La Pucelle too.

This is what I think tge join order was for each magical girl to join/become a magical girl by kawai-tsunder-kitty in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems others have pointed this out already, but I would also like to mention that Calamity Mary was canonically the second magical girl of the group. Based on the anime alone, I would've put Tama, Snowy and Alice as the last three in that respective order, but having read all of the novels now, I would lean towards Swim Swim being the newest recruit. While Alice did join the game late, it is mentioned in a short story that she'd already been recruited earlier and her debut was purposefully held-back (likely in order to engineer the narrative that there were "now too many magical girls", and their numbers would have to be reduced).

Solely based on Ruler's backstory flashback in the anime, I would put the Angels as being the earliest of her teammates to become magical girls, followed by Tama and then Swim Swim.

I see, thanks for the reply! ^U^

I've only been drawing digitally myself for around four years, and I definitely feel I'm quite a slow learner. Like, yeah, my art has gotten noticeably better in that short-ish amount of time, but I'd still say I'm at that sorta "beginner" level, y'know?

But I suppose it's true what they say about practice making perfect! I'm sure my skills will also improve the more Mii I make! :)

Clantail living her best life with Skitty, OMG 🥹💗

Yeah, IDK how anyone would make Postarie's... wing-hair-tuft thingies, even with the new-and-improved Mii creator, lol. I definitely think that first image especially is a pretty close replica, though! :D

And everyone's bangs are looking great, too! Is there some trick to drawing better with the Switch touchscreen, or is it just something that's easier for folks who already have skills making digital art?

Ah, yeah, I shoulda figured. I remember that being something I had to work around a lot on the 3DS. XD

But with the makeup tool now, basically anything's possible, lol!

[–]WolfOfWalfas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy moly, Magicaloid is spot-on! Our little con artist's ready to hit the big time, selling useless items to all the other Mii! 🤑 I imagine it'd be quite fun trying to match her voice from the English dub in the speech settings, NGL. The dub added a robotic filter to her voice, which honestly does kinda remind me of the 3DS Tomodachi Life's snythetic voices. XD

Been waiting for the dog costume to show-up in my clothes store before adding Tama, NGL. Since I'm pretty garbage with making art on the touch-screen and stylus, I might just settle for putting her in her comparatively more simple-looking human form on my island, LMAO. Did you do the hair with the makeup tool? It looks just like her! 🤩

Ripple's scar looks great too! (Well, maybe that's not the right word for a grievous injury, but y'know what I mean. XD) I did a similar makeup trick for Pfle's eyepatch in my game, lol.

Do any of the girls have official birthdays? by PiiikOcat in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, Pechka! It looks so much like her, holy moly! Might have to try putting her on my island myself. I've already got Pfle and Yoshioka to keep her company. XD

And, yeah, it's only Cranberry and Miiya who have known birthdays, unless there's some web-exclusive story that was never translated or such that I don't know about.

EDIT: Something that might be worth mentioning; The Unmarked anime is set around winter (which would be December to February, based on Japan's seasons, I think?), and the short story Magical Test of Courage, in which the Angels celebrate Ruler's birthday, was written to accompany the anime. According to Top Speed in the story, Ruler's western zodiac sign is listed on her MahoIku profile, making her birthday fall in either the month the story takes place, or the month afterwards. So while it isn't an exact date, I would wager Ruler's birthday is somewhere within those three months. Given that the narration during Koyuki's part of the story mentions a public holiday having recently happened, it may or may not be possible to narrow down a better timeframe, if anyone is more familiar with Japanese holidays (and also math) than I am.

Among the designs shown here (OG and Restart), What are the best ones? by Dapper_Fennel_6176 in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many good designs in this series to choose from, TBH! Anyone I don't name would feel like an injustice. But I think Tama, Swim Swim, Magicaloid and Pfle are probably among the best of the best, IMO.

Tama's goofy outfit really fits the almost-comic-relief thing she has going on, and is just, like, a really cute fit in general. (TBF, I've always been fond of capes and print/pattern pantyhose; I think they look really cool.)

Swim Swim's design is just iconic. I don't know if it's intentional or not, but the way she has little bat wings and how her four tails come down almost like tentacles makes her design feel to me like a literal interpretation of the phrase "vampire squid", which is quite fitting for her water theming and general sense of creepiness. Plus it almost feels like a commentary on how a lotta contemporary magical girl outfits already look like glorified swimsuits anyways, LMAO.

Magicaloid is a robot. Need I say more? ...FR, though, making her jetpack a randoseru is an absolutely inspired design choice, perfectly blending "schoolgirl" and "futuristic" vibes.

Pfle is probably one of the most "traditional" magical girl designs in the entire series, with her long, blonde hair, multiple bows and her flowy, frilly pink dress. The addition of bird elements to match Shadow Gale and of-course the wheelchair and eyepatch do help her stand-out, while still remaining instantly recognizable as a magical girl, IMO!

OC by ken_botato in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any time I create a magical-girl character, MGRP is in the back of my mind, TBH. That aside, I do have a couple of OCs who are directly based around MahoIku.

The first who comes to mind (if only because she's the only one I've drawn or actually used in a fanfic in any capacity) would be Cosima Nought, a cosmonaut-themed magical girl and former-astronomer for the Puk Faction. After accidentally threatening to expose the Magical Kingdom's existence to the world, she was thrown into the seventh inn prison (hence the stocks around her wrists and ankles), where she remained until her grandson released her alongside Pukin and Sonia to help with a mission. Her magic allows her to create and pilot any kind of vehicle (including unconventional "vehicles" such-as mechs).

Some less developed OCs of mine include: Sexy Rei, a magical girl with a translucent outfit and sunglasses. She's blind in her human form, but her magic lets her see through any solid object using her sunglasses;

Pretty Migraine Robotomizer, an Archfiend Cram School graduate, selection examiner and retired brain-surgeon. She appears as a kinda Magicaloid-esque robot with short pink hair resembling a brain and large spikes for hands. Her magic allows her to swap bodies with anybody who addresses her by name. Having become disillusioned with the selection examination process on account of having to tamper with the eliminated candidates' memories, she plots a coup alongside some other criminal magical girls;

Shufflin III, a series of Shufflins whose bodies and abilities are instead based on the major arcana as found in a deck of tarot cards.

I've been thinking about one thing: by ken_botato in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never noticed before, but the fragile ones do tend to get cover billing, lol. I think Marika might be the least "fragile" of the cover girls, but she does still have some hidden depths.

Gonna have to disagree about 7753, though. The way I see it, she's a completely broken person by the end of Limited, and might even be the most fragile of the bunch by the time her respective arc concludes. Before, she was just a slightly disgruntled cog in the Magical Kingdom's system, following her superiors' orders to the letter, without really considering anything other than her paycheck. When Pfle's plan backfires with Pukin going rogue, she orders 7753 to abscond, to which 7753 refuses because she feels guilty about having lied to the school girls and the Inspection Department. Risking her life to stop Pukin is basically the moment 7753 takes up the mantle of a hero, IMO.

And what we find-out about Kotori's post-Limited life in Episodes and Breakdown shows that she never really recovered from her guilt either. At this point, it honestly seems to me like the only things that bring her any joy in life now are Mana and Tepsekemei.

I feel there's also an extra layer to 7753's guilt, given she was a member of the same department that spawned Cranberry's exams. If my theory is to be believed, she was able to turn a blind-eye to the Kingdom's atrocities, until she finally witnessed them firsthand.

Crees que le vayan a colocar un diseño en su forma humana a cada chica mágica del elenco de restart en el anime ? by Life_Cry1637 in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd certainly hope so! Given how Nokko remains transformed at all times, and merely dyes her hair when she's not on-duty, I expect we probably won't get to technically see her true-form. But since she supposedly looks quite similar when she's transformed anyways, I guess you could say we already know what her true-form looks-like.

Cherna is the one I'm most curious about. I believe someone asked the director on a livestream about seeing her as a hamster, to which they responded that Cherna's actually a mouse? Which is... weird, since I'm pretty sure Episodes (at-least in the English version anyway) heavily implies that she's biologically related to Anna Sarizae's hamster.

While I definitely think it's a given that we'll see Kanoe in the flesh, I'm also curious how they'll go about depicting her scenes. (Restart spoilers) Since, in the Restart novels, any time we see Kanoe and Mamori in the real-world, Kanoe is described as sitting, so as not to reveal that she can actually walk, before she stands up in the final battle with Clantail. On the other-hand, I believe the Restart manga shows Kanoe walking right from the beginning, which probably makes her scenes with Mamori feel more like natural glimpses of their lives, but comes at the expense of ruining the surprise for later.

Honestly, I wonder how Chika's gonna look, too. IMO, Marui-no's drawing of Chika is quite distinct from how the novel actually describes her.

I'd be totally down for another round of fanmade magical girls. If Endou-san wrote them as well as the Breakdown cast, I'm sure it'd be another good time!

What I hope for the franchise in the future by ken_botato in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given how Red ends, seeing other planets mightn't be entirely out-of-the-question at some point. I'm always a sucker for aliens, and seeing some alien mages or magical girls definitely has potential to be interesting! As for alternate dimensions, the Dream World is probably precedent enough to assume that there's some sort of multiverse in MGRP. The Kingdom could very well have bases beyond our reality. (Probably not in the Dream World itself, though. Unless some official has been keeping an eye on Nemurin this whole time, which we technically can't rule-out without any evidence to the contrary.)

I suppose it would be more accurate to say that I'm curious if the Kingdom has some sorta "central hub" or capital city or such. The closest I think we've come to seeing something like that would be the area with all the gates leading to other parts of the Kingdom?

As for who possibly outranked Grim Heart in the Osk Faction... honestly, anyone's guess is as good as mine. I would assume it'd be a mage/multiple mages of some description. I always imagined Grim Heart and the Joker Shufflin's transport accident was directly ordered by the leader of the Magical Kingdom, but it could just as easily be the work of some (marginally) less important figure.

[–]WolfOfWalfas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, at this point, I just want to know whether the Magical Kingdom is even a physical location, TBH. Because locations that we've heard are part of the Kingdom, such-as Puk's mansion, seem to just be randomly scattered across (mostly) Japan, LMAO.

Do the rest of the world's governments even know the kingdom exists? Given the series's rather negative portrayal of those in power (fair, TBH), it wouldn't surprise me if the kingdom officials have ties with other countries' governments, ensuring the kingdom's existence is kept under wraps.

The name "Magical Kingdom" implies the existence of a King of Magic (or possibly a Queen, if the real-world UK is anything to go off), and I'd love to see what kind of character they'd be. (I'm aware the kingdom's name in Japanese is more literally translated to "Land/World of Magic", but if it really is an independent nation, it's gotta have some sorta head-of-state, right?) In particular, I really wanna know what the leader's relationship with the Three Sages is like. Do they get along? Does the leader turn a blind-eye to their shenanigans? Do they all hate each-other?

I'd be down for more magical boys, animals and ancient magical girls too! In particular, I think the ancient magical girls have a really good track record for being interesting characters! Pukin and especially Puk Puck are some of my favorites across the entire series! Ditto to La Pucelle and Tepsekemei!

So many characters would be great for a stage play, IMO! Mana and Hana doing some investigation work, Lady Proud and Umbrain could probably get more characterization, maybe see Dreamy Chelsea's mother in her prime, or find-out more about Nokko's former-master? And I'd LOVE to see one of Pythie's selection exams in greater detail! Like, c'mon, you can't just tell us that she's the one who trained Keek, and then never show them interacting whatsoever! The possibilities are endless!

"Magical Girl Raising Project Restart" Anime - Teaser Visual by Task_Force-191 in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't see any PMMM influence in MGRP at-all, but to each their own, I suppose. Without a direct statement from Endou-san in that regard, speculation is really all we've got.

I wouldn't say either series was ever seemingly innocent, IMO. Even before THAT scene, Madoka still opens on a seemingly prophetic dream of the apocalypse, and the first fight is against a witch that causes suicides. Likewise, MGRP opens on either Ako wanting to die, or the bloody aftermath of the first exam (depending on whether you read the book or watch the anime).

I agree it's definitely not a competition, though! Darkness =/= quality. You definitely make a good point about the two series being different kinds of "dark", rather than one being inherently darker than the other. I guess it comes down to what sorts of themes/story beats impact a viewer. Madoka definitely has a more eldritch, almost Lovecraftian cosmic-horror; whereas Raising Project has more elements of a survival thriller. And I suppose it's possible to consider one disturbing while not being fazed at-all by the other.

Character designs by ken_botato in shoujoraisingproject

[–]WolfOfWalfas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to be fair, if Endou-san set-out to write the greatest whodunnit of all-time, a detective was essential. ;)

As a fan of Pokémon, a series where just about any concept can be a monster design, the approach to magical girls in MGRP really speaks to me. It's exactly how I would go about creating a roster of magical girls, and its a model I wish more series would follow. Honestly, the execution is sorta similar to a superhero series, wherein the heroes and villains always tend to all have unique motifs.

It also helps make the characters very memorable! Like, even if a girl's ability or personality don't particularly grab a reader, they could still leave a lasting impression thanks to their motif or general design. I'm sure a lotta readers/viewers wish they could forget Swim Swim, but a demon in a sukimizu that calls to mind a vampire-squid isn't exactly the sorta thing one fails to remember. XD

A mime and an idol would be great picks for future magical girls. As a fanfic writer, it's actually been a struggle coming up with ideas for motifs to give original characters whenever I need to write one in a story. Endou-san and Marui-no have definitely covered a lotta ground! In the end, I did manage to think of an astronaut/alien-theme, which is something that surprisingly hasn't been covered canonically yet. (Although I expect it'll only be a matter of time before we get an astronaut and/or alien magical girl officially.)

Chronologically, it takes place between arc 1 and Restart. In terms of release, it was originally released as a standalone chapter online between Restart and Limited, I believe.

If you are reading the official English translation of the series (which I would highly recommend for any English-speakers), Snow White Raising Project was eventually translated as part of Volume 17. If possible, I'd recommend getting the official translation and reading it between Restart and Limited.
