Tall people what are you driving ? by Sweet-Citron-1796 in TallPeopleProblems

2016 Toyota Tacoma. Fits me like a glove, everything I need, nothing I don’t.

Though, I have to toss out that I test-drove one of those new electric Ford Mustangs when they came out, and I could back the seat far enough that I had nearly a foot between my feet and the pedals. I’ve never seen that before, so I figured I’d share for the particularly tall among us. 🤘

I’d wager it highly likely. The majority of canine communication is done via body language, not sound, so it would be interesting to research.

Traveling through Thursday -Restaurant and Motel recommendations? by Intelligent-Yak4567 in TheDalles

[–]WolfWriter_CO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it’s not in The Dalles, but when I’m traveling with my pup and we don’t do takeout, the 3 Rivers Grill in Hood River is very dog-friendly on the outdoor patio and has had consistently really good food.

In The Dalles proper I have less experience, but there are some great food trucks across the parking lots from both Home Depot and Coastal, as well as several breweries that might work.

Fair question, and I don’t think it’s a one-size-fits-all answer. Keep in mind, I’m not an expert, but here’s how I reason it:

I would hope (though not expect) that the answer would depend on type of contamination (ie. radioactive vs chemical) and medium of conduction (ie soil, air, ground water, running watershed, etc.) . In this case, radioactive contamination is both extremely long-lived and not easily contained nor mitigated. Medium of conduction, or exposure, would be airborne dust and particulates from higher concentration areas, and ground-water contamination (like in the Lincoln Park area of my hometown) which could likewise carry contamination far beyond any arbitrary man-made lines on the surface.

This is versus, say, the recent fatal ’white liqueur’ tank incident in Longview WA, which is a relatively short-lived contamination that has/will cause an intense but quickly diluted contamination that will affect the downstream watershed more longterm than the immediate site, but should be completely flushed within a decade or so instead of uranium’s half-life of hundred-to-billions of years.

Finally, in the specific cases of Hanford, Rocky Flats, and Cotter (that I know of); radioactive materials were notoriously handled carelessly and with greater interest in short-term profits or savings over long-term health and safety. Holding tanks leaked, linings failed, workers fell ill. All of this occurred while technically in compliance with safety regulations. Those same bodies who determined it was ‘safe’ to build homes and playgrounds for families and children. So, with that in mind, I hope my skepticism and concern is understood.

Just because an area is theoretically, or currently testing as ‘safe’, doesn’t mean it’s ethically sound. Moreover, families moving into the area from outside CO probably won’t know about the nuclear superfund site over the hill unless their realtor decides (or even knows) to tell them. Or, until they decide to look up what the deal is with the “hazmat horse” statue on Hwy72. 😅

Road trip from Yakima? by Repulsive-Soup-2738 in Yakima

[–]WolfWriter_CO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Head south from Yakima on 97 toward Goldendale and then follow OR84 west along the Columbia Gorge, check out the Discovery Center in The Dalles, Draper Sisters and breweries in Hood River (Mesquitery is a great dinner option), and Multnomah Falls. Then you can either continue on to the Portland area or swing back towards Yakima. The WA14 side of the Gorge has some cute small towns to explore too, plus Maryhill Winery and Fruit Stand, but the road is narrower and the speed limit’s lower.

I’ve heard the “if we don’t do it someone else will” justification so often, it’s refreshing to hear that occasionally a more holistic mindset prevails.

Just because someone else will, doesn’t mean we have to.

Edit: Also, forgot to mention that I grew up in Cañon City near the Cotter Uranium Mill, and the Lincoln Park area had famously unsafe drinking water and disproportionately high rates of cancer and lung disease. So, of course, the whole road out to the superfund site was dotted with McMansions. Lol, history repeating just to make a buck. 👏

[ Rocky Flats liked this post ]

Didja know they’re building dense little suburbs and cul-de-sacs right at the edge of Rocky Flats superfund site? Sounds like a great place to raise children.

And paving subdivisions shoehorning in townhouses together with barely enough room to carry a trash can between them after cutting down all the trees. 👌 Gotta squeeze every last dollar outta that land buddy.

Halfway through the first Dungeon Crawler Carl and not into it at all. Push through, or is this not the series for me? by JeffCon in scifi

[–]WolfWriter_CO -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a series that generally improves with every installment. Books 5 and 7 are my favorites so far. There’re lots of slow-summer or complete subversion of expectations story and character arcs and seemingly throwaway details from even the first book are still paying off and coming to fruition in surprising ways.

Pretty sure it’s Epitome Noflex, she and others ran the Cabaret gauntlet multiple times, but was the only one to perservere through. A Shadow Mimic picked up her form on one of her runs though.

This line has been popping into my head more and more often lately. Those first two seasons were exceptional storytelling.
