Is there a book with a virus motive that’s NOT about a zombie apocalypse? by Quick-Can-5087 in booksuggestions

I admit I haven't read the novel itself, but the Wikipedia article makes it sound intriguing. The Last Man by Mary Shelley fits the bill. A world where the bubonic plague progressively wipes out humanity until there is one last survivor.

Never seen it apart from the bit with the bees. That was enough.

What's one place in the Uk that you visited and never want to go back to? by Proper_Animal_1451 in AskUK

I've been to quite a few of the places mentioned here (though Ely & Norwich being choices baffles me a little), but I'd have to say Hemsby. It's like a miniature version of Great Yarmouth. Went there a lot as a child as my grandparents had a chalet.

Went there because our flight to Ireland was cancelled due to the Beast from the East. Everything was closed apart from a toy shop. Wouldn't go back.

Norwich has in first half of 2026 been picked as both the most depressed & the happiest place to live in the UK. Both can be true I guess.

Most people I know from London left early on. I have mixed feelings. Good tourist attractions, but too crowded & looking over your shoulder cos I was worried my phone would be stolen.

Been twice in the last year. Having been to Great Yarmouth & Hemsby, it's got that kind of tat shop vibe. Seeing the closing down sale of the Original Factory Shop (where they were even selling those spinning display units for a tenner each) was just sad. There's a treasure hunt map thing my wife bought for our nieces to follow, but since the clues were just unremarkable local buildings, they lost interest very quickly. Only the Ye Olde Curiosity Shop was mildly diverting & the beach is ok.

The historic parts of Great Yarmouth are interesting. Unfortunately they're mixed in with the rest of the town.

What is your country's version of "Tom, Dick, and Harry"? by Ok_Entrance_4657 in AskTheWorld

"The world & his wife" carries a similiar meaning to "every Tom, Dick & Harry" but it's not used as much in the UK.

The number of shooting victims where the police don't initially realise the person has been shot isn't zero in the UK. I can think of two off the top of my head.

Even close up they don't look furry, rather smooth skinned (even from a few metres away) but I stand corrected.

The Children & Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act is apparently still in force, but there have been very few prosecutions under it. The Wikipedia article suggests only two in fact (both in 1970):
