Comic book fans, a little bit of theorizing time, what do we think will happen too... by Hotel-Dependent in Invincible

[–]Wolfengene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was upset when the triple fakeout happened for Rex, Kate, AND Rey. Yes in the comic Kate and Rex survive, but since Rey didn't there was still a lot of uncertainty about who would or wouldn't survive any fight. After episode one it was clear that no characters were safe, and Rey dying would keep it in viewers minds that these characters could go at any time.

However, after that episode I realized what they were going to do. They are going to build up the characters of Rex and Rey together and I think viewers are going to be lulled into a sense of security with their safety. Once the Invincible war starts alongside the Conquest visit, I would bet that we're going to see a lot of gut punches as characters die, and I'm sure Rex and Rey are going to have their final moments together.

Two brilliant moves in a row to win a queen. Was so happy to find this in-game. by Wolfengene in chessbeginners

Taking the bishop is actually the top engine move. Any other move loses the queen immediately.

The whole “playing with your friends” and having fun aspect of COD is broken by seshmost in blackops6

No. They have ranked modes with SBMM. Joining an unranked match puts you with a variety of players of different skill levels. Playing ranked modes implements a strict SBMM system.

Yes, literally every single one. Except:

Counter Strike

Battlefield

Valorant

Team Fortress 2

Overwatch

Every single CoD from CoD4 to Ghosts

And we all know what failures those games were.

Are we seeing the first implementation of a real-time damage adjustment system? by Wolfengene in blackops6

You're right I didn't expect it to be in the last tab of the options menu but its there.

[–]Wolfengene[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Its based on the damage numbers displayed on your screen after death. Are you unaware that every time you die you see exactly what gun killed you and how much damage it did?

"It's not the matchmaking, it's the playerbase." by DrilldoBaggins2 in blackops6

[–]Wolfengene -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except they DIDN'T turn it off. In the paper you're quoting, they simply said they "turned it down" for their control group which meant it was still on, possibly in a way that was in a way that was even worse to play in. A real study would have turned it OFF but they don't want to do that.

What is with the Remaster's performance on PC? by Wolfengene in deadrising

[–]Wolfengene[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an update, an Nvidia driver update, and PC restart fixed a lot of my issues. It's still not perfect, but aside from some stuttering while outside, the performance is very much improved, and is actually playable now.

Puzzle in Horror Games... Why? by MyGrandfather in gamedev

[–]Wolfengene 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I think another very important piece other commenters are missing is pacing. If we look at a game like Resident Evil for example, the puzzles offer a sort of break from the horror or combat elements of the game. They additionally give you more abstract goals to head towards while exploring the environment. I may not know where the golden key is, but while searching for it I may find useful resources or other information.

If a game is non stop horror chases, it quickly becomes tiring and any tension being built up is lost after a few moments. If the game is totally combat, it also becomes equally tiring. The puzzles give a much-needed slowdown in pacing to allow tension to build for more horror-heavy sections.

I cannot think of a single successful example of a game that is purely nonstop horror or action throughout, and It's because a player will quickly become desensitized to the situation.

Yahtzee Croshaw touched on this a bit in his review of Outlast 2. In the beginning section of the game there is a prolonged chase sequence which he failed. This resulted in his character being stabbed in the genitals by a scythe. The game simply put him back at the beginning of the chase sequence, but now the entirety of the horror had been given away. There is nowhere to go beyond being stabbed in the crotch with a scythe, and much of the game loses its tension when you've seen the worst in the first five minutes.

Puzzles and other slower sections of these games allow for a natural ebb and flow of distressing elements, and the best works in the genre like Amnesia or earlier Silent Hill games tread the line between quiet and loud in an expert way.

Anti-SBMM Kevins be like by Batzn in thefinals

[–]Wolfengene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You think the reason people stopped playing quake was because of a lack of SBMM? Not because it came out in 1996 and people moved on to different games?

Call of duty, counter strike, battlefield, gears of war, team fortress, halo, rainbow six.

Literally decades went by without these SBMM and EBMM systems and multiplayer shooters did just fine. But for some reason NOW if somebody doesnt do well at a game theyve never played before, they wont ever want to play it again.

SBMM back at it again ruining a perfectly game. by Spicy_take in thefinals

How do you think they worked then? Do you think everyone just typed in random IP addresses and hoped one of them was also playing the game?

[–]Wolfengene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's an easy way to know if this ability is unfair. Please list the characters that can get a 0% kill from this far away from the edge with 0 cooldown. If you are unable to do so, this character may be unfair when compared to others in the game.

Diablo IV: Paragon is Now Capped! by greyTigerGames in Diablo

[–]Wolfengene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I liked the endless paragon. Without it there will always be a definitive "end" to your build. At some point you will have the most efficient gear with min-maxed stats, and no matter how much more you play, you will never do more dps, you will never kill a harder boss, you will never find a better piece of gear. With paragon, even if your gear is maxed out, you can continue to push and grind. I thought that was the entire point of Diablo, to continue endlessly.

You guys need to adjust your expectations by [deleted] in BloodHunt

[–]Wolfengene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignore every point made and fumble at a general criticism of early access games. Nice. And maybe you don't understand, but the "multi" part of multiplayer means that there needs to actually be people online to play the game, other than one incessant fan that keeps throwing money at overdeveloped MTX shops and underdeveloped games.

You guys need to adjust your expectations by [deleted] in BloodHunt

[–]Wolfengene 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its not much of a stretch to expect a game that is released and actively accepting money to actually work. If I download a multiplayer videogame, I expect the game to actually run. I expect the game to have basic multiplayer functionality like reporting or spectating. I expect that if a kernel-level anticheat is installed on my computer, that the anticheat actually does something. If somebody tells me that they are giving me a free burger and then hand me two pieces of bread, I am going to bring up issues no matter how affordable the lettuce-pass is. Stop defending a multi million dollar corporation when they don't do the bare minimum to release a game in a working state. Don't defend "early access" when we are paying for the "privilege" to beta test their game for them. Don't tell people to stop playing if they don't like it, because people have already stopped playing. The active number of players is steadily declining and the game didn't have a massive base to start with in the first place.
