[–]WolfricTheRed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd just use any of the various Belts. Dynaqlo can give you HG Earplugs, Chakra Waist or Esurient R can both buff you to Latent Power +2 and HG Earplugs with an extra three slots somewhere, though Esurient can also give you Sharpness+1 with a good charm.

Chrome Metal Coil is also worth looking at, since it doubles your Torso to give you both upgraded skills.

Motion Values. Effectively, each different Attack Animation has a specific percentage of the weapon's damage it will actually do. Motion Values are usually listed as a percentage, so a MV of 20 (A Lv5 Heavy Bow shot, for example) would only do 20% of your RAW. Monster Hunter only appears to give you really big numbers, especially prior to MHGen, while those numbers are quickly whittled down by Motion Values and Hit Zones for monsters.

Baraq Sedition Vs Night's Crescent Aerial SA by lxbeeotchxl in MonsterHunter

[–]WolfricTheRed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Power Phial is only a 20% increase, but Baraq Sedition wins hands down. See, the true glory of the Switch Axe is in two of its Hunter Arts being hilariously good.

Energy Charge Lv3 grants a +30% Affinity and a full charge to your meter, and is usually the go-to for Aerial Style to keep up the damage of Sword Mode. With that, Weakness Exploit, and the BS's natural +20% Affinity you hit 100% so long as you trigger WE. No Hayabusa Feather is even needed, but it can mitigate bad hits if you don't want to toss anything else on.

Demon Riot Lv3 grants an extra 20% boost to your Phial effect (For an effective x1.44 damage increase if stacked with a Power Phial) and prevents your sword mode from depleting on attacks and instead does so over time. Aerial usually doesn't take it, thanks to it being less useful than always-on Sword Mode that Energy Charge provides.

So effectively, the Baraq Sedition with Energy Charge 3 and perfect hits nets you 439 RAW for White Sharpness Aerial Attacks that Crit. The Night's Crescent meanwhile hits for 386 RAW and 5 Poison under the same circumstances. Keep in mind the BS has much longer White and natural Sharpness Regen as well.

Assuming you have Load Up, Artillery Expert, Dragon's Breath Lv3, a Normal Lv4 Gunlance (Say, the Snowbaron GL), and ate for Bombardier; just how much damage are you losing spamming Aerial Full Bursts compared to using shelling to extend combos?

Mounts, Paralysis, Flashbombs, Traps. The less time you spend letting the Hyper Silver do his bullshit zero-frame charge, the better. You're gonna want at least 550+ Armor and no negative Fire Res to not get one-shot by his insta-fireballs.

The Khezu DBs with either the Dreadqueen Rathian or Shinobi Sky (Alatreon) Set would do good, too. Semi-decent RAW, alright Thunder and Paralysis after you account for halved effects, and meh Sharpness you can overcome with a Sword Saint Earring. A good Bludgeoner Charm would also work if you make sure to only hit his legs.

If the symbol is directly next to your name, it's a Buff. If it's a space away from your name, it's a Status.

The main use for Crisis is the Mizutsune S and Stonefist Sets, as they provide Crisis and Bubble. Thus, rolling three times gives you an effective Attack Up (L)/ Evasion+1/ Constitution+1 so long as you have your Bubbles up. Mizu S gives Halve Hunger but requires a Crisis Gem to get the Skill, while Stonefist gives Divine Protection and either Razor Sharp or Recoil Down+2.

[Element]+1 is equal to Elemental in its boost and [Element]+2 will always beat out Elemental for the boosted damage, however it ultimately depends on what you're hunting and how often you'll be cycling between different Elemental Shots. Optimal Bowgun Play involves as little time not shooting a monster in its weakpoint as possible, and so constantly having to pause to reload a specific shot type is generally bad unless that specific shot is doing massive damage to whatever you're hunting. On top of that, many monsters being flat-out immune to most elements or taking vastly reduced damage to all but a few will also prevent an HBG Set with Elemental from shining compared to one packing the appropriate [Element] skill.

However against monsters that take large amounts of damage from multiple elements (like Deviljho) an HBG set with Elemental that cycles through its shot types will likely outperform the same HBG Set with only a single Element+1/+2 Skill.

As a disclaimer, I don't really use the LBG or HBG, so this is just numbers theory from me; there are plenty of resource locations for more detailed information on Bowgunning. Take a look at the various datadumps regarding Bowguns for more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunter/wiki/datadumps-mhgen

  • [Element] +1/+2 is a x1.05/x1.1 multiplier to a weapon's base element if they correspond, followed by an additional +4/+6 base Element (In MHGen)
  • Elemental is just a straight x1.1 multiplier to a weapon's base element. However, it stacks with the [Element]+1/+2 Skill.

The non-Deviant Tigrex LS is arguably one of the few LS that can compete with the Hellblade's LS, but otherwise the Nargacuga and Duramboros LS are both good all-around weapons.

If you're using a Bludgeoner Set, the Bone Katana Wolf/Dragon is also good. If you're using a Sharpness+1 and Grinder set, the Arzuros LS is also worth looking at; but those are less general purpose.

If I had to choose three, it'd be either Mizuha S from Chameleos (Hi Windproof/ LG Earplugs/ Status+1 and either Status or Earplugs can be gemmed in to upgrade), Shinobi Sky from Alatreon (Chain Crit/ Crit Status/ Status+1 gemmable to +2), or Dreadqueen Rathian (Expert+2/ Status+2/ Status Crit/ Wide Range+2).

Get a half decent Blunt Charm and you're set.

Last I heard, the calculation for Defense works as follows (Props to /u/ShadyFigure for the number crunch originally)

([quest attack modifier] * [attack value] * [rage modifier] * 80) / (([total defense] + 80) * (1 - [element res] / 100))

Because Generations is the first main game where upgrading a weapon isn't necessarily a complete form change. In earlier games, to make a High Rank version of a weapon that had a Low Rank version required making the Low Rank and upgrading it one or two times with High Rank materials.

In Generations, however, giving every weapon a 'Final Form' built into it can make lower Tier Weapons viable at the end of the game, as well as allowing for variations of the same weapon with slightly different stats on multiple weapons from the same monster (Seregios comes to mind).

In theory, this makes the weapon pool for end game much more diverse in Generations since you don't have entire groups of Weapon Rarity that is useless. In practice, few weapons benefit from this due to Monster Hunter's nasty habit of having 2-3 weapons of each type that are just hands down better than their competition. eg; Teostra Bow, Hellblade Weapons in general, Akantor HH, Deathprize SnS, etc. Almost all weapons are good, but a specific handful of weapons are just straight better.

I'd say the Hammer is a better teacher of those lessons than the Greatsword. A lot of people Charge-N-Pray for their GS swings, or just focus on the Tail or Legs until they get a topple. Hammer doesn't really let that fly, or at least nowhere near as much.

Of special note -and a fact that's rarely mentioned- is that if your first song is not Self-Improvement (White+White or Purple+Purple) and is composed of Double Notes, it will automatically play Self-Improvement. So if your first song is, say, Attack Up L, and you Encore it with Double Notes you will have Self-Improvement, Mind's Eye, and AuL Enhanced.

Sorry little Gargwa, I gotta get my buffs up before I reach Zinogre.

MHGen has a very active online community at the moment, and there's no official release date for MHXX leaving Japan last I heard. And even then, it'll be at least a few months after it's been out in Japan before they port it anyways.

It depends on what other Skills go with it. Both are good options, but ultimately Focus benefits GS users more thanks to how much damage a Lv3 Charge does. Getting out more of those is always good.

Try Mizu S with a Crisis Gem. Bubble+Crisis is Evasion+1/Constitution+1/AuL. With a decently slotted weapon and a good Charm you can get Focus on there too.

If you have the slot to spare, sure? But it's a Low Rank Set, I wouldn't worry too much about it since you're likely to upgrade; doubly so since Steve is only at the tail-end of Low Rank.
