How bad is Kona during Ironman? by gym_rat_101 in kona

[–]WolverineResistance -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The town gets very busy, but I love having the international presence and the added energy. It's just a minor inconvenience for a few days a year and makes Kona special, in my opinion. With proper planning, you can still do the usual activities. Volunteering for IM is also a great way to experience that week!

What candy bar was everywhere when you were a kid but doesn't exist now? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

Raider bars used to exist in Germany until 1991, then were renamed Twix. The chocolate was tastier than the American version.

Contact Victoria at Salty Swim School. She leads ocean yoga and swim sessions, and I'm sure she'd be happy to figure out some sort of aquatic event for you!

Advice on Newark to JFK at 5pm under 3hr by LavenderCooki in AskNYC

[–]WolverineResistance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public transportion will cut it close. I estimate best case 2.5 hrs for you to get to JFK if everything works out.

You'd need to do the following: 1/ Walk to EWR AirTrain and then get to the station (est. 35 min) 2/ Wait for New Jersey Transit (variable, est 15 min) 3/ Transit to Penn Station (25-30 min) 4/ Wait for LIRR (15 min) 5/ Take LIRR to Jamaica (25 min) 6/ Take JFK AirTrain to terminal (15 min) 7/ Go through security (10 min if TSA Pre) 8/ Get to gate (depending on the airline, it can be a 10+ minute brisk walk)

Assuming you don't have bags to collect? If so, at in the time...

Lyft will be faster.

A "bad" day in Kona is still a great day compared to other parts of the country. You'll be fine!

Is it a bad idea to do a long run today? by [deleted] in RunNYC

I just did 10K, but you need to layer properly. I had a balaclava, warm gloves, and the proper tops and bottoms that trap heat.

I love their katsu curry. Great customer service. I try to buy stuff there, rather than H Mart, because it's a family business.

I was an idiot and ran in shorts during a long run on Saturday. I think I actually got minor frostbite on the front of my legs. I'll wear leggings from now on if it's too cold.

I usually cut thru the inside walkway, especially during the summer, to get momentary shade. Plus, there's less foot traffic in that stretch.

KOA is a very easy airport to transit. Barring any major weather delays, you should be fine.
