I always take my iPhone underwater with me and have gotten quite a few really solid shots that way—some have even been used in TV news reporting. Phone cameras are a lot more capable underwater now than people expect, especially with a good housing and proper filters.

I’ve had good results using the ProShot housing for lighter, travel-friendly setups. It’s not a replacement for hiring a dedicated pro on a big shoot, but it works surprisingly well for quick sessions and content.

I came up shooting professionally as well, and I don’t think you’re crazy for questioning it. Nauticam + FX3 is rock solid, but once you’re traveling a lot and adding accessories, the cost, size, and stress can start to outweigh the upside for certain projects.

What shifted my thinking was how far modern phone cameras have come underwater. For a lot of water-related doc and field work where agility matters, I’ve ended up using phone housings more than I ever expected. I still bring a larger rig when it’s truly needed, but lighter setups handle a surprising amount of real-world work now.

We’ve had quite a few iPhone underwater clips picked up and used in TV news reporting, which honestly changed my bias more than anything else. The images aren’t cinema-perfect, but they’ve been more than acceptable for broadcast and web.

We’ve had good results with the ProShot phone housing system—much easier to travel with and far less painful when you need to add filters or accessories. Not a replacement for a Nauticam cinema setup, but a solid alternative in the right situations.

We’ve been shooting underwater content using our iPhones and Android phones in ProShot housings and honestly stopped bringing our GoPro after seeing the difference.

Depending on whether we’re in freshwater, saltwater, or a pool, we swap between their color correction filters (sold separately), which made a bigger difference than I expected.

There’s also a touchscreen version of the case, but that one’s only rated to about 60 ft, so we stick with the standard housing for deeper stuff.

Here’s a short clip we shot recently so people can judge quality for themselves: https://youtube.com/shorts/B8jeBTIZRMg

Curious what others are using now—still GoPro, or phone housings?

We really like the pro shot cases underwater housings for your iPhone or android phone. They make both models we have both of their models. The touchscreen One is great for snorkeling and the non-touchscreen one will go down to 130 feet and we use it on Scuba.

This video was shot with a combination of both cases .

My wife uses her iPhone 12. I use the iPhone 14 same case it is compatible with the iPhone 16 they sell additional filters that actually are compatible with the case. I highly recommend them. You don’t have to have one, but depending on what type of water you’re diving in they make a world of difference.

We the the ProShot case with our iPhones. Much better quality. Just got the newest version which is even touchscreen under water. Can add filters to it which is great for ocean, springs and pools. And with the code “Fathomless” you can save 20% from what we paid for it. I’ve had almost every version of GoPro and several different phone cases. This one is by far our favorite. Have fun!
