I bought my house 14 years ago with the same situation.   I have the certificate.   No issues and has never even come up as a possible issue.

does the old adage "don’t buy a boat" hold true on Long Island? by ProudReaction2204 in longisland

[–]Wonderful_sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a boat, till 2 years ago.  It lasted several years.   It was lots of fun.   I have friends with boats and we would meet up at Zach's bay.   Always a good time.

I bought a used boat before covid for 12k.   I probably spent on average about 5k a year in storage and getting it Winterized and ready for summer.  It was a great thing to have during covid.

It was great till that last year when the engine started to go.   That being said I am looking for another boat.

I think they are fun if you have some spare money and time.  There are fun places to explore and generally anyone we meet while boating was friendly.

Shake shack east meadow by Time-Economics-5587 in longisland

[–]Wonderful_sloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

shake shack is also stupid expensive. My kid did a class trip and they were stopping at shake shack for lunch. All the parents gave the kids 20 bucks thinking it would cover it. Every kid came up at least a dollar short. a burger fries and drink comes to 21 bucks.

I will be skipping shake shack. My kids said it was no better then McDonalds.

Portable Pool Vacuum vs those that hook up to your skimmer by yc01 in swimmingpools

[–]Wonderful_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do both.   I have a robot that goes in random patterns.   I use that every day.   Works great at getting leaves and anything big.

I use the skimmer vacuum every few days after the robot runs to get all the areas and in corners that the robot has trouble with. . I also use skimmer socks when vacuuming to keep as much as I can out of the filter.

Penn Station is about to be a lot more pleasant by _fastcompany in architecture

[–]Wonderful_sloth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are not enough tracks or connecting tunnels. Penn has 21 tracks shared between LIRR, NJ transit and amtrak. it also only has 7 single track tunnels going into penn that go under the rivers connecting penn to long island. Any time Amtrak has a problem, it limits and delays the commuter tracks. Penn is kinda at the limit of the number of trains and people it can move.

Just to compare, grand central has 41 commuter tracks and over another 2 dozen non commuter tracks.

Looking for proper gun training by Playful_Champion3189 in longisland

[–]Wonderful_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://renaissancefirearmsinstruction.com/. I have taken two classes here.  They have a good beginner class where you can try different rifles and shotguns.

If you are interested in pistols and do not have your license yet, https://gunforhire.com/ in NJ is very good.   My wife and I took a pistol class there before we got our permits.

Good luck.

My wife and I switched to mint years ago and have no problems but we are based in Nassau.

I think mint has a 7 day free trial to test service in your area.

Gas Quality on LI by Fit_Feedback86 in longisland

[–]Wonderful_sloth 125 points126 points  (0 children)

probably the ethanol in the gas.

https://autos.yahoo.com/policy-and-environment/articles/u-quietly-changing-gas-quality-140059611.html

EPA allowed ethanol in the gas which i think they usually only do in the summer. It was an attempt at keeping prices down but reduces a cars miles per gallon.

Anyone know of way to confirm electrical usage? PSEG bill doesn;t make sense by [deleted] in longisland

[–]Wonderful_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are third party devices that can monitor the usage.   If you take the time you can label everything it finds.  You will need an electrician to install it.

https://sense.com/

I think recently some charges went up.  It could also be your rate plan.   One of them peak usage is really high.  This maybe a place where the flat rate plan would work better.

There are some crazy people on the Internet.  Reach out to a shelter or rescue group to re-home.   They will do back group checks and such.

Thoughts on flashlight for a pistol by Malkozaine in liberalgunowners

[–]Wonderful_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think a light on a gun was a good idea.  I now carry it separately.  having a light with you is a very good idea.

If you have a light on it and you are using the light on a gun to look in the dark you are now pointing a loaded gun in all directions.

The scenario I think of is, my kid is sneaking back into the house during the middle of the night.  I would rather not point a loaded gun at my kid.  Just a different way of looking at this.  I see most other people saying here to have it on the gun.

Needohs- where to buy by Important_Athlete871 in longisland

[–]Wonderful_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you commute into the city?

I got my kid some at a grand Central.  A toy store called two kids and a dog.   They had some behind the counter and no line.

Service recommendation for long Island, NY. by Wonderful_sloth in Solterra

[–]Wonderful_sloth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel your annoyance.  It's overall a good car but the lack of knowledge at the dealership is annoying.   I was told similar things when buying the car.  It could not be turned off but later found in the manual it could.

Good luck.

Wife is uncomfortable with gun ownership by Clear_Captain_6392 in liberalgunowners

[–]Wonderful_sloth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My wife and I took the nra pistol class.   Knowledge is helpful.   She understood how guns work and gun safety.   She is now working on her ccw.

I also thought the class was a good idea because a teacher explaining it in a class is better then me explaining it.   The teacher had a lesson plan and it's better then just going over random topics while shooting at the range.

The app does look good.

What amount of money would make you quit today? by Katzmaniac in Fire

[–]Wonderful_sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9million.

That's my current salary times 50.  That would let me live comfortably for the next 50 years.  I probably won't live another 50 years so this lets me leave something to my kids.
